Nearly half a century later, an elegant hunk of black granite, etched with local names, might help the public finally honor those soldiers. Unlike today's revered soldiers, Vietnam era warriors were not lauded as heroes and had precious few chances to become revered figures in the public eye. Their sacrifices were shrouded in protests and shame. The location isn't the best. There are several "vagrants" or what I call mutants that wonder the area. Parking next the Shark Tank is best. Remember the 142 "Sons of San Jose" who lost their lives during the Vietnam War. These young men gave the ultimate sacrifice in order for us to continue to live in the land of the free and the home of the brave. From some online research... "The Buffington House on Lincoln Ave in the Willow Glen neighborhood of San Jose. Landmark No 35. Designated May 20, 1986. Dedicated Founders Day 1988. Inscription: Lulu and Howard M Buffington, police and fire chief, city of Willow Glen. Representative of residences that lined Lincoln Avenue. This residential complex included a house, carriage house and other structures when it was renovated in 1988. The Buffington House was converted to commercial office use in 1988. A 9,000-square-foot office expansion, designed in 1991-1992 and costing approximately $800,000, was added to the property c, 1995, designed by Bamburg."

I was marveling at the huge slabs of concrete that are rumored to 6 feet thick and were simply left in place when the demolished the base when I stumbled across something unexpected I was poking around and found hidden behind some bushes, a previously unknown memorial to the Astronauts of STS-107 aka The Space Shuttle Columbia Disaster. Markers for Brown, Chawla, and Husband were still visible, and 4 missing one were clearly for McCool, Ramon, Anderson and Clark. Its a kind of a cool little find. The monument is is really bad shape and I'm hoping to contact the community collage that now controls the land and see if either they or The Moffett Field Museum are interested in preserving the remaining markers. From the first spy satellites to submarine launched ballistic missiles it covers a lot of territory. While Southern California rightfully gets most of the spotlight in aviation, the Bay remains an unheralded pioneer. Onizuka AFS, is one such hub. Named after Air Force Lt. Colonel Ellison S. Onizuka, who died in the Challenger disaster, the base served as a primary control station for military satellites. In aviation circles (and conspiracy circles too) the station was simply known as 'The Blue Cube' The Blue Cube using its 3 satellite dishes controlled vast areas of space and served as an NSA downlink node as well. Its windowless walls and mysterious function was the stuff of legends. Multiple power sources, super thick concrete walls (To prevent electronic eavesdropping) , limited access all added to its lore. Even my father who was a navy engineer, had to be re-cleared to provide engineering services there and was always escorted such was the nature of the goings on there. The base closed in 2010 as part of BRAC and its functions were swapped over to Vandenberg AFB and the structure was subsequently demolished. However, it remains part of the Bay Area's link to Space.

According to one friend, they used to put up a marvelous Christmas lights display in years past, but that tradition seems to have stopped. However, you can still see remnants of it such as the Leg Lamp from "A Christmas Story" in the front window. There's a plaque out front that reads: "City of San Jose Historical Landmark #201 W.W. Cozzens purchased 13.5 acres of land and built a on this site between 1873 and 1875. He was a pioneer of Santa Clara Valley who introduced a revolutinary process of drying prunes and apricots, that would eventually be shipped all over the world. Unfortuately, the house burned down in August 1889. The house you see before you was built in 1890. In 1976, the house was purchased by Anthony and Paulette Ornellas, who spent the next nine years restoring it. They lived here for 37 years until 2014. They are owed much gratitude for the major restoration of this property, both for our enjoyment and the generations that will follow. With affection, The Present Owner May 24th, 2014"

I haven't been to this library in years, but popped in today to do some research for a family…read moremember. I'm pretty sure they used to have an Ancestry membership back when I used to visit fairly often. That was a huge asset in researching my family tree, and a nice service since the membership's so pricey. They don't have a membership now, so I felt pretty limited in what I was able to research today. I didn't leave with any useful information today, but that's a lot of what genealogy is. The staff was fairly nice, but the library seems to have a pretty independent, keep-to-your-self atmosphere. At least that's what I picked up. Overall, a nice little resource for genealogists. Although I came away empty-handed today, I've found some useful information here in the past. Also, although it's part of the Church of Jesus Christ and the Latter-Day Saints, that aspect's not intrusive. I'm not Mormon, but I still feel pretty comfortable here. This library's for everyone!

Historical Depot…read more This depot was built in 1877 and is a historical landmark connecting San Francisco with to Santa Clara County by railroad. It is next to the Agnew hospital built in 1885 as a center for both psychiatric and medical care. Both the depot and hospital are historical landmarks. Some people thought Ken Keasy worked in the hospital and was inspired by his experiences there to write One Flew Over the Cookoo's Nest. Unfortunately this is not true. Actually, he was worked as a nurse's aide in the psychiatric ward of the Menlo Park Veteran's Hospital. The depot is a little run down. It might be worth a quick trip for history buffs to see the building and read the plaque.

This location is a privately owned home and is **NOT** open to the public.However, there is a plaque out front designating it as City of San José historical landmark #98. The wooden meeting house―McDonnell Hall at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church―down the road on San Antonio St is where he used to meet and organize the United Farm Workers union and mounted his infamous grape boycott. That location is now a National Historic landmark so go check it out, as well. That is open to the public. ¡Sí se puede!
