You expect to see buccaneers clustered round the tables muttering darkly or a Navy official to be dropping the King's shilling into flagons. Definitely worth a visit if you look for time travel in a pub, which I do.

Providing you're on the right country lane, finding it isn't a problem. The Duke's presence along the winding road is unmissable. Inside, the pub is fairly modern with a twist of country bumpkin. Tartan drapes (complete with pins) hang over the lovely windows, the exposed wooden beams and mix of furniture help to make it feel cosy and inviting. I had rang and delayed our booking by a couple of hours - the massive bbq feast the night before had rendered the original time of 1pm a little too early to stomach. On arrival it seemed we needn't have bothered calling ahead. There were a few tables occupied, some eating, some not. The staff seemed to deal with each a table at a time. This meant that there was a wait for food, but that wasn't a problem for us and our bbq stuffed tummies. The liver parfait starter (served with a berry sauce, toast and small salad garnish) seemed a little too perfect to be homemade - i'm not sure it was made in-house - if it was hats off to them! It was lovely. The rest of my family had the cauliflower and stilton soup which was also very tasty. The main event - the roast. I opted for beef (£13.50). It came with a huge homemade yorkie, roast potatoes, mixed veg, gravy and horseradish sauce. The beef was beautiful and tender, the yorkshire pud was crisp and the veg nicely cooked, although there could have been more of it. The potatoes were a little disappointing - they were more like boiled potatoes that had been baked rather than the crispy, fluffy treats I'm used to eating at home. The gravy was perfect - but, again, there could have been more of it. Not sure I'd make the trip from Manchester to the back lanes of Lach Dennis especially for a Duke's Sunday lunch, but I'll know where to go if i'm in the area and crave a good, honest pub roast.
