The Big Apple is amazing when you consider the fact that there is no other "Restaurants" within a 1 hour drive of it. Even though it is a bakery, most people visit the place for the meals. There is also a mini zoo, which makes it a very good stop on your way to your destination. The food itself is pretty good, the portions are huge for what you pay for and the quality is really good for the price. Everything is fresh, but could be slightly on the salty side. Ribs, Poutine, sandwiches and chicken fingers all were good, came with choice of fries or coleslaw. Apple fries were baked apples with cinnamon, it was good but the portions were huge! The photos they have on their menu makes everything looks smaller than they are, need to learn about McDonalds marketing! The washrooms are not the cleanest and the service is somewhat slow on busy hours. There are a lot of employees who are there but looks like their services have not been optimized, so half of them are just standing around waiting. read more

This place is so fun and family-friendly that I have to give it 4 stars even though I'd say the food is about a 3. What's great - the place is absolutely adorable and so fun (especially compared to your typical freeway pit stop) with a petting zoo, food truck and several mini stores tucked within the factory itself. With large windows next to the factory you are able to see the bakers in action, creating the Big Apple's famed pies! My family and I have been here before during my youth but came by again on our way back to Toronto from Prince Edward County this past weekend. We ordered hamburgers and fries as well as a traditional apple pie to take home. The venue is largely a grocery store-style set-up but there is a separate space for sit-down eating which is great. Decor of the entire building is fun and makes you feel right at home though you are shifted back in time to a place with much more of an old town feel. The burgers had generously-sized patties and were good - nothing fancy, just a good home style old-fashioned burger. The fries were alright - could be crispier! What was a bit odd to us was that the combo price did not include drinks and most of the drinks available in the store are at least $2-3 apiece so factor that in as you price you meal! The poutines looked great but at $10 each were a bit pricey for me to entertain. Overall, I'd say the experience here is the highlight - you can't help but enjoy the quaint environment of the Big Apple - definitely a nice escape from usual city life :) read more

We're on our way to Montreal and speed the big Apple. I convinced my husband to stop, and I'm glad we did! We got to walk and stretch our legs. We viewed and feed the animals they had at the front of the property, and then walked to the back to take pictures with the big Apple. Inside are clean restrooms, a cute coffee shop, a cider bar, cafe, and market. Most things are Apple centric, but they have some nice honeys and maple items (candies, syrups, etc.). They have several free activities you can do on property (i.e. ping pong, shuffle board, and mini golf). You just need to go inside and ask for the equipment. They also have trains in the weekends for little kids. We didn't do any of this, as we were pressed for time. We tried the humble mumble pie, bought two bottles of the cranberry apple cider to take home as a gift, and drank a cherry Porter. We also got to sample done of the other ciders and beers they carried. Overall, a great stop. And definitely worth doing of you have a child with you on a long road trip. read more

Absolutely love this place. Haven't been here in years so it was a pleasant surprise to see their major renovation. It definitely has more of a touristy feel to it. One thing I was hoping for was their apple filled churros which was thankfully available. With their new layout, it also now seems to be a regular on their menu. It was as delicious as I remembered it to be! I would definitely take the hour drive out just for them. 5/5. Their apple bread is also a must get. What I highly suggest is for you to get a loaf (or two) and make some french toast with them. I made some over the weekend and my friend, who is not really a foodie, really enjoyed it. I've been going here since I was a kid. When the operation was smaller, I feel like the apple pies were tastier with a better crust, but maybe my palette has just developed over time. At least the filing is still just right with thick apple slices and a ooey-gooey centre. There's a nostalgia about stopping here that keeps me coming back for more. Got little kids, or older family members? This place is 'da bomb! We pulled over, to give our legs a chance to stretch. This place had everything - animals to see, a huge honking apple - that visitors could enter. The family bathroom was generously sized, and had what appeared to be like a patch of green grass on the floor. This was, quite possibly, the best family sized and clean, large family bathroom I've ever been in. There was a caboose train to check out, and some mini-golf. Not to mention the most obvious: you will find just about anything apple-related here. I picked up some apple chutney for some relatives here. Fun. There was an apple orchard in the near distance. Stopping here, you can get some great outdoor pics, relieve your bowels, grab a bite, feed some animals, and stretch your legs. The Big Apple's gigantic apple pies used to be amazing. I used to love their curmble pie. But the quality of their pies have gone downhill over the past year or so. The apples are not always cooked properly, the crust is often undercooked and mushy. The standard apple pies at Loblaws are just as good, if not better. So this place is more "buy souvenirs and treats" than restaurant - it's a cafeteria in a gift shop. My wife and I ordered a couple of their special apple smoked hotdogs and a poutine. The poutine was massive- could have been a solo meal for 3 people. The hotdogs were okay. I liked the flavour, my wife wasn't a fan. It's distinctive and different. The buns, however, were stale and hard as a rock. Not toasted, just horribly stale. I'd guess they baked too many for the weekend on Friday and were just not wanting to throw them away. Dinner was on the road tonight. We were headed to the cottage, about 2.5 hours east of Toronto. If you ever make this drive along the 401 (say, on your way to Ottawa or Montréal), you'll past this apple-y tourist attraction in Colborne, Ontario. You can't miss the place. It really is A BIG APPLE. It was dinnertime, and we needed to get out of the car after what seemed like a million hours of driving. The Big Apple was the only nearby choice we could all agree on. I knew I was about to dish out a few dollars for this little break, but after hitting the road at quite possibly the worst time for traffic (blame the last of school), we all needed to stretch and refresh. I've been to this place a few times over the years and it's certainly changed. First off, it's pretty commercial now - they have a Yogurty's (Frozen Yogurt joint) and a soon-to-be opened "401 Cider Brewery" (Cider, Wine and Beer for the grown-ups) I understand The Apple has new owners now. They used to be small fries run by a family, from what I remember. There's still the traditional apple pie and other apple by-products to be purchased, but they now offer pizza, panini sandwiches, salads, and don't forget the knick-knack shop that carries every cottage-style-apple-based thingamajig you will ever need. It was to be a quick bite, as our dog was in the car (in the shade, and all windows opened a crack for all of you animal-people) and really, I just wanted to get to the cottage before dark. Two slices of mediocre pizza (each cut in half, so 4 slices, by my standards), a bottle of water, and a box of 4 tarts (Uh, yeah, how could I not?) cost me $19.00. I found it pricey, but the price didn't surprise me. They have a selection of local homemade jams and jellies, an open kitchen to watch them bake, and several kinds of baked yumminess for you to buy. (One pie is $12.99. I've tasted them. They're GOOD) I will go back one day to try the apple pie coffee, but only after I give the Apple Pie Milk Shake a taste. The place fantastic for kids to break up a long drive: mini-put, ping-pong, mini-train rides, petting zoo...all free. They are open every day, all year long, from 8am-8pm. There is tons of free parking and space for your travelling pets. There's a candy shop, and now Yogurty's, so it's pretty easy to spend an entire afternoon there. Keep in mind it's a little pricey, but hey, if you drive along the 401 along that stretch between Toronto and Kingston....there's not a lot of fun places to go to that will please your sweet tooth AND offer you some fun family time. Yeehaw! I like apple pie, but I loooooovvvvvvvvvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee the apple pies from The Big Apple. The apples are cooked until they're tender, but not mushy. The crust is fantastic. None of that tough flavorless crust going on here. I always stop by whenever I'm driving past on the 401. The mumble crumble (crumble topped apple pie) is my favorite. The cinnamon and crunchy rolled oats complement the soft apples. The pies are huge and cheap at $10 a pie. They make great gifts as everyone I've given a pie to has loved them. Yes, the place looks kitschy with the World Largest Apple welcoming you, but the apple pies are incredible. And they also bake great apple bread. All goods are baked fresh on the premises and because of the fast turnaround, the pies are always very very fresh. I went there at 5 pm once and a worker was putting out freshly baked pies. The store manager, Bill, came out to the parking lot and laid on the ground for 15 minutes to fix the bottom of our car so we could make it home safely. I haven't seen an Apple this big since I put an Apple an inch in front of my eyes, but I still consider The Big Apple a fairly Big Apple. For some reason, It looks more like a shy blushing Orange more than an Apple, either that or they left it out there too long and got burned under the sun. This is an interesting pit stop along Highway 401, not an ONRoute stop nor Webers Burger stop but a more family friendly Country Store, Bakery, Restaurant, Mini Zoo and Attractions all rolled into one. It's a BIG operation with many visitors passing by. The Country Store is Canadiana knick knacks not much to see here. The Bakery is massive so you know what good things you can expect from there. The Restaurant is a good way to try some of what they offer. The Mini Zoo and Attractions are a good way to keep kids entertained. Interestingly enough they sell apple pies and such things at The Big Apple. Being as it is early December there wasn't much going on at this place; the mini golf was closed and the gift shop was dead, but surprisingly huge. The slice of apple crumble I got was pretty good and it was a hefty sized slice too. For $3.50 your getting a good size slice for being in the middle of a tourist trap. In retrospect I should have just bought a whole pie for $10. Watch out for the "LOVE" neon t-shirts. OUCH! read more

We haven't been to The Big Apple for quite some time, but when we found out they had new owners, we decided to give it another try. They have done a great job. The smoked ribs and pulled pork were delicious and flavourable. The amount of apple products has increased to be what this place should have always been; apple heaven. The entertainment was free, my boys especially loved the Train rides and the Mini Golf. The price was great and the family had a wonderful afternoon. The first time my eyes fell on the Big Apple I had a good laugh and kept on driving. Oh Ontario. You got the memo about putting up oversized replicas along highways to break up the monotony of driving (side note, if this sort of stuff really gets you going, check out North Dakota.) Big oversized apple aside, The Big Apple does make a pretty good pie/apple themed desert. Like Elle P., my favorite is the mumble crumble (clever name yes?) and for a mere 10 dollars you can enjoy crumble/pie what have you for at least a week. My 4 housemates and I (who all eat a pretty healthy amount) usually took about 4-5 days to clean one out after a holiday meal. Also, they have mini-golf! Useful place to stop for restroom break when headed East. Lots of knick knacks to browse and stretch your feet. The bakery products fell well short of our expectations. Turnovers and struedel pastry was hard and doughy with a tiny amount of filling. The filling itself was bland--no cinnamon, clove or nutmeg flavor just sugar and very little apple flavor. Washroom facilities were clean though. A one and done type of place unless it happens to be on your way. read more

The Big Apple has a lot of interesting items that appeal to various ages. The petting zoo leaves a lot to be desired in both care and upkeep of the animals and environment. Lots of updates since I was here last and still a few more coming. Looking forward to the cider and wine area opening. This is a great place to stop on an otherwise boring drive on the 401. It's always fairly busy with your buses. They have a million different apple products and the pies and bread are delicious. Now with a candy shoppe and fro-yo there are plenty options! We stuck with apple products and grabbed a apple cider and a apple coffee. The coffee was REALLY weak and the cider was delicious although pricy. read more

Always pass this place for years when I drive back and fourth between Montreal and Toronto. Quit interesting g place and a nice place to catch a break specially if you got kids. They have a mini zoo with small farm animals and wild rabbits hopping around freely on the grass. A glass view into the pie apple factory, souvenir store, chocolates, cafe and restaurant. No social distancing at all on Sunday 9 August at 4:45. Hundreds of people pushing in aisles with children; many not wearing masks. I got hit with several adults and children pushing me it was so over-crowded. A complete madhouse. It seems like the business doesn't care about Covid or its effects and neither did the people there. Children's play areas unsafe as well with no social distancing. This is tragic. The business should be reported to Health Authorities. Seems like they are only interested in making money. I agree their pies are really awful now. Ingredient list on pies is horrible. Full of glucose, fructose, palm oil and the like. No quality ingredients and very few apples. Poor Covid 19 control and poor pie quality. Not worth going. Beware. Other businesses abiding by the rules. Tragic to see this business not doing what they are supposed to do. Disgraceful. read more

The BIG APPLE is always a stop I make on my way down the 401 to and from Toronto. Have to pick up one of their great apple pies to bring on my visits and then one on my way home to Montreal. Their apple bread raisin bread is great although the last time I think they forgot the raisins. As a bonus they offer a free Level 2 charging station for my fellow EV drivers. read more

This place an utter disappointment. It has potential, but gives off this "jack of all trades, master of none" vibe that ultimately means nothing is done particularly well here. At first you think it's a cute establishment, it has the giant Apple off the highway, an apple photo op cardboard cutout, a small animal zoo, and then different games outside (ping pong, mini golf etc). All of which look like they need updating. And the outdoor store quite literally looks like a junkyard. When you walk in you can see the big factory where the pies are being made. Off to one side there is a candy and chocolate shop. To the other side is a vast array of apple products, among other things like pumpkin pie, maple cookies and pecan pie. They also serve cafeteria style food. My boyfriend and I got poutine, a slice of regular Apple pie, caramel crumble Apple pie, and Apple cider mini doughnuts. You can have your pie with ice cream but unfortunately no one was manning that area while we were there. We checked out at the cashiers after going through tacky souvenirs and sat in the table area for our meal. The poutine, which took forever to prepare, was below average. It wasn't tasty or satisfying in any way. Then there was the pie- without a doubt, do not waste your money. The apples were so hard they were barely cooked at all. It completely lacked any cinnamon at all and tasted almost syrupy. For a place who's claim to fame is their Apple pie, I can tell you you're better off getting one from a grocery store. There is nothing to see here, folks. We did however, enjoy the mini doughnuts. They were fresh and sugary, but there is no overt Apple taste to these "Apple cider" doughnuts. They may have well just been plain sugar doughnuts. All in all, nothing grabbed our attention about this place and it was probably our one and only stop here. A giant let down. read more

An absolute waste of time. For a Christmas Day outing with my son, I checked the website and they are supposedly open year round. They have special Christmas events listed too. No mention of being closed. I even called them up and checked their hours and there was no suggestion that they were closed on Christmas. An hour and a half drive from Toronto followed...and they were closed on arrival. I wasn't the only one either. Several other cars arrived while I was there and they too were disappointed. For a tourist attraction that goes to the trouble of advertising Christmas activities on their website, they could have put some warning about being closed on Christmas Day, and actually NOT claim being open year round. The Big Apple was a big disappointment and an expensive waste of time and gas - with some traffic, nearly four hours round trip in the car and nothing to show for it. read more

Yes, it's a touristy thing to do, but every time our family head for a day of birding at Presqu'ile Provincial Park, we stop in at the Big Apple restaurant and gift shop. Even in a bleak cold day, you can sit in the cozy big windowed dining room with your choice of warm old fashioned apple pie made with the local Eastern Ontario apples. There's the usual choice of burgers, fries and drinks but you come for the apple pie. Great place for your kids to stretch their legs, look at the little zoo and you can all browse the souvenirs in the big gift shop next door. Kitschy but it will put a smile on your face. If you don't mind climbing stairs you can tour the apple museum in the actual Big Apple, a giant concrete apple. It's a family ritual to go here and we do it at least once a year. ;) read more
