Big Island Bakehouse is a can't miss when visiting Big Island! We made it over to this place on our second to last day and we were greeted with so much cheer and the friendly staff gave recommendations and helped guide our choices. We tried the Bomboloni and Nutella Coconut croissant during our initial visit. The Bomboloni reminds me of a malasada but I enjoyed the creamy filling of this so much more. We ended up going back on our last day and tried some of the savory options - the goat cheese pesto croissant and then sausage roll were standouts for us. Enjoyed this place so much we hardly took pictures, but everyone should add this as a stop especially if visiting Volcano National Park! read more

Open only 3 days a week, this has become one of my favorite stops on the way to Volcano (from Hilo). In fact, except Madam Pele does NOT necessarily keep to the same schedule as the bakery, would try to time my Volcano drives to coincide with Friday, Saturday, or Sunday! Hahah. Today got a sampling of Mediterranean scones (savory with olives and delicious seasonings), croissants, danish, and my favorite... the ube cruffin. Holy Moly Batman... that one item was worth the drive alone! Since there really wasn't any real estate in our tummies, we split everything 3 ways... over the course of the next few hours. Two weeks later, still thinking about that ube cruffin! Would definitely do a repeat on that as well as the Medeterranean scones while trying other items. And as the nice couple infront of us in line mentioned, will have to return for the sister deli across the parking lot. Heard it was featured in Guy Hagi's food vlog. The ube croughnut is the greatest thing on this planet earth that I've ever had the chance to experience. It looks so sweet but it's not, it the perfect amount of sweetness. This was our second visit to Big Island Bakehouse, and it's always a treat! When visiting another island, we love the convenience of having delicious, satisfying snacks on hand while we're on the go--pastries are definitely our go-to! Their pastries are wonderfully flaky and generously filled--they never skimp on the filling or featured flavors. They offer both sweet and savory options, and today, we finally got to try their ube croinuts after missing out last time. They were absolutely worth the wait! The bakery opens at 10:00 AM, but there's already a line 15-20 minutes beforehand. Since they can only accommodate one customer at a time in the front section, expect a bit of a wait. The staff is incredibly friendly, and you can tell they put so much pride and aloha into their pastries. It's always a pleasure to support them. This cute little bakery makes the most of its space, and it's a must-visit when you're in the Hilo area. Definitely a 10/10 recommend! read more

Holy shit. These were the best pastries I've ever had in my LIFE. I feel like there should be an option to offer an additional star for something so spectacular. The ube cronut was my favorite and I will dream about it for years to come. Second favorite for me was the ham and cheese croissant. Third favorite was the bombolini, which surprised me because I thought it would be #1 for me. My issue with it was that there's too much cream, the bottom fell out right away. I think it would be still delicious with less cream. The cinnamon roll was also tasty, a little bit thicker and more bread like than some other cinnamon rolls that are more tightly wound with more swirls of cinnamon. Anyway, I don't think there's any bad options here. I eyeballed the raspberry scone and pesto & goat cheese croissants too, but I figured 4 pastries is enough. You MUST try this place. read more

Umm, not sure how they are not world famous!!!!! Like they are the best bake shop I have ever tired!!! With every bite I was in disbelief about the perfection. Wish regretting my decision not to buy more!! The lemon meringue Cruffin, I mean come on. So fresh, so flaky, so perfect. I was thinking of how my dad would love it. Now for something we should all never go without tasting at least once, the BOMBOLONI. The pastry cream was just beyond, And the pastry was so filled! Smooth, creamy, rich melt in your mouth protection. Again really I don't know how they are not world famous!! When I say don't walk run, I mean it. This is probably the best bakery I have ever been to. The Ube cronut and pain aux raisin were by far my favorite. They were both fresh yet unique. This was the best place to find on this vacation. I'm certain that locals must know this place but if you're traveling and in this area, a stop here should be on your list. This is not a sit down table cloth type of place, but an old fashioned style bakery where you pick things up to go. I wanted something sweet and I wasn't disappointed - even though I was there about an hour before closing. Although they had some amazing looking savory items, I stuck to my original sweet tooth quest (have had a taste test of some). I got a blackberry pastry, raspberry scones and two types of cookies. And the young woman who was behind the counter couldn't have been nicer, more cheerful and friendly. I only wish I'd found this sooner! read more

Fantastic small batch bakehouse run by a hardworking one man baker They are currently open friday saturday sundays between ten am and two pm. I made my way over there on a Sunday around 1:30 p m and had slim pickings left, for good reason. I got to try a chocolate croissant, lemon meringue cruffkn, and walnut blue cheese scone. All items were excellently crafted, not too sweet and masterfully made. I recommend coming early for the widest of selections. read more

By far, theeee best pastries my fiancé and I had in Hawaii. The croissants were large, super flakey, filling and flavorful. They deliver amazing prompt service. Highly suggest standing in line early prior to opening as there was a long line when we went. Great place for fresh pastries, just get there early as there is already a line before they open at 1000 am. Their days of operations are limited but what they sell is the best in the Keeau area! The texture of his pastries are light, flakey and tender. As for the flavors, there is a lovely mix of local (like pineapple coconut) and traditional (goat cheese pesto) flavors. However, there is one pastry that constantly sells out. This is the bomboloni. Imagine a croissant like yeast donut over stuffed with the most silky pastry cream scented with vanilla beans. *chefs kiss* You will be greeted and showered with genuinely positive customer service. A coworker blessed me with a brownie roulade with vanilla crème mousseline from @thebigislandbakehouse yesterday, and it was absolutely sensational. Before we get into the flavor, I must discuss the texture. I NEED to know how that texture was even possible. BRILLIANT! Think of the best crispy and chewy brownie you've ever had, then imagine biting into it and it being completely light and almost crumbly. I guess you could say it's practically cloud-like, and as soon as you take a bite, it completely dissipates. It's as if they whipped up the best brownie recipe on the face of the planet and then folded in egg whites to add airiness. I've never had anything like this in my life! I'm actually at a loss for words. The chocolate flavor was equally remarkable. The chocolate/cocoa flavor was beautifully complex and intense, and it had the perfect balance of earthy, bitter, and sweet. I honestly wasn't ok while eating this. I swear I had an out-of-body experience! After finishing this brownie, I had to know what chocolate they used because, I kid you not, it was incredible. After checking their page, I saw they used local chocolate from a farm (@farmlikeagoddess) in Pāhoa that I never knew about. How amazing is that! This was an "experiment," but it needs to be put on the menu asap! Absolutely STUNNING in every way And last but not least, that vanilla crème mousseline! It was sweet, buttery, silky, and rich. Texture-wise, think of a luxurious vanilla custard mixed with whipped butter. This is the definition of decadence. Bravo! I can't wait until this is on the menu. P.S. I have been wanting to try the Bakehouse since I seen it on a foodie page I follow. It's a tiny little shop that packs a lot of flavor! I was met by Mitchell the owner and bakery. He was very helpful when it came to making selections cause let's be honest I wanted everything! I got a Lilikoi cinnamon roll, a lemon meringue cruffin, a bombolini, chocolate croissant & a almond croissant. My favorite thing was the lilikoi cinnamon roll. I would've never thought those 2 flavors would go together but it was the perfect mix of tangy and sweet! Move over pb&j!!! I can't wait to go back and see what more there is to try! Found this gem while perusing Yelp for goodies to try on our day trip to Hilo. Wow! First - the cheesecake. I love New York style cheesecake - dense, slightly sweet, and creamy - this did not disappoint. From the scratch made graham cracker crumbs to the blueberry topping, it was amazing! I only had a slice (had nothing to keep a whole cake cold) but I could have eaten more. Definitely a must try! We also got two different savory croissants that were flaky and flavorful. We will have to fly back to try the other flavors. The Bomboloni was just as everyone described. Crispy exterior with a smooth vanilla flavored pastry cream. My husbands favorite! He actually wanted to eat more. On the list for next time! Lemon meringue cruffin had the tang of lemon but the sweet marshmallow meringue topping that rounded out the flavors. I would get this every time I come. There was another pastry (I can't remember the name) with a chocolate filling that had a hint of coconut flavor or maybe the coconut flavor was in the creamy topping - I am not sure which but that was so amazing! I absolutely loved it. Another must try is the crème brûlée danish - delish!! We got a loaf of rye bread - have t tried it yet but it smells wonderful. Overall - I would recommend everyone come and try their pastries and breads. They are open Friday - Sunday from 10-2 We got there before 10 and there was a line of the regulars . . I love their almond croissants and cinnamon rolls with Lily Quail frosting and had to buy a loaf of sourdough rolls bread. Just had to try it.
