As it's run entirely by students, the newspaper provides a platform for new student writers to gain some practical experience and build up a portfolio of articles - so it's very popular amongst Cardiff's journalism students. Anyone can find the newspaper on the fourth floor of the students' union building, and volunteer to get involved - whether it's in writing, photography, production or other aspects of running the newspaper. The final product is widely respected, well-distributed and well-read, keeping the entire Cardiff University population up to date on major issues that effect students in the city and across the UK. It also includes sections covering, sport, the latest news, features, politics, interviews, health, and science & the environment - as well as a Welsh language section, 'Taf-Od'.

It is contributed to by an amazing, volunteering team of students, keeping you up to date with the happenings of Cardiff student life. There are regular columnists to entertain you, many of whom have been friends of mine and trust me, you will want to hear what they have to say. The Gair rhydd can be an essential part of a student's life if they are looking to write for a publication to build up a portfolio for themselves and with the student media awards being held every year in the Hilton, they can be recognized and rewarded for their work. I thoroughly recommend getting involved with contributing to this paper and also reading it, the content is of a high standard and demonstrates the talent and passion of the students who contribute to it.

The Miniature Music Press is the brainchild of Aimee-Jade Hayes of See Monkey Do Monkey Recordings,…read moreand musician and promoter Rowan Liggett. The first issue was released ten months ago, and has already established itself as the essential guide to music in Cardiff. Featuring page after page of no-nonsense listings, this free, A5 zine-sized, full-colour, music magazine ticks a lot of boxes. Featuring new releases, live reviews, and the latest music news, as well as offering free downloads with each issue, it's not surprising that The Miniature Music Press has already earned itself a readership of 30,000. And check out J/M Strange's regular feature at the back! Guaranteed to bend your head out of shape and provide you with some well-earned escapism of the most delicious kind! Each month sees an increase in size of the magazine. Issue 8, released in May, was 42 pages long, and the June issue has grown to 48. That's an increase of just under twenty percent (or there abouts... I've never been too pedantic when it comes to doing the math). Whichever way you look at it, with this kind of growth rate, we can expect it to be fatter than a telephone directory in a couple of years time. That's phat! Next months magazine will be the festival issue, featuring the best of what's on offer in the summer, including Croissant Neuf in Usk, Green Man in the Brecon Beacons, as well as some of the smaller gatherings and city-based summer-loving and frivolity... You can pick up a copy at pretty much any venue in town, as well as at loads of shops and pubs. Failing that, check them out on-line... www.theminiaturemusicpress.com/ www.seemonkeydomonkey.com/ www.thenorthstarcardiff.com www.save-the-vulcan.blogspot.com

There are the occasional flares of success that sprout up, but these are few and far between. However, that's not to say that it doesn't exist; it's there, but it's discreet. It's hidden. Playing dead until something fresh and amazing comes along to give it something to live for. And that's where the Miniature Music Press comes in. In its scant few pages are listings for each and every music event and happening going on in the next month. With regular interviews, editorial articles from the local Cardiff scenesters and comprehensive gig listings, MMS seems to be building a scene all around itself, getting the information out there on exciting new music coming out of the city in a way that hasn't been seen in years. Our city has a diverse and wonderful collection of bands and music aficionados. What it hasn't had in a long time, is a community. The Miniature Music Press looks like it may be the cure to this problem.

It also carries smaller items of furniture, as well as white goods and general electricals. Sadly, the white goods and electricals are not reconditioned, and so they will only accept items that are working at the time of donation, but there's no guarantee that they will continue to do so once you get them home. They do perform function and PAT tests, so the portable appliances are likely to be more reliable. Nevertheless, white goods are the biggest sellers, which is pretty much the same story across the 87 outlets of this kind throughout the UK. Because of this they are always on the lookout for donations to replenish their white goods stock. It's always best to check with them first before loading heavy items into your car and hauling them all the way to the shop, as they will refuse certain items. They won't accept any gas cookers for instance. They also sell some new stock at reasonable prices. This is not damaged or redundant stock. Instead, they rely on buying in lesser known brands that do not carry such a hefty price tag.

Charity shops carrying larger home items are quite common in Florida, and all of the furniture in my respective family members' houses are sourced from these "thrift stores" and then reupholstered or repainted. Thankfully, this makes it difficult to spend £2,000 on a hutch or dining room table. Speaking of costs, the price here are rock bottom: Sturdy wooden dining sets for under £100, TVs for £25 and bedside tables for a fiver. For me, the appeal is owning a piece of furniture that can't be found in every home in Britain (ahem, IKEA). The staff here incredibly helpful - I wasn't in here five minutes before two members of staff politely informed me that the shop had an upstairs stock room, in case I couldn't find anything I wanted on the ground floor.
