The Big Well. Don't miss it!

If you are anywhere within 50 miles of this museum, you MUST go! THIS is what a museum should be and here's why: 1.) Beautifully designed. How many towns do you know that are nearly blown off the map by an EF5 tornado and decide to make the best of it and rebuild? And do it with great style and in ecologically sound ways? This museum is stunning; its architecture uses the location at the World's Largest Hand-Dug Well to full advantage. 2.) Really interesting! We had no idea when we walked in that we would learn so much about the massive tornado of 2007, as well as the town of Greensburg and Kansas history. 3.) Interactive. There are drawers to pull out, artifacts to peruse, and stairs to climb down into the well. 4.) Marge. She was on duty when we visited and was kind enough to share with us the story of how she survived the tornado and, unfortunately, lost a relative. Truly incredible and very moving. Thank you! There is nothing like listening to a survivor tell her story. Best part of our tour by far. 5.) Free coffee. You heard me! FREE! I love the Midwest. 6.) Fantastic gift shop with cute items ranging from classy (great books) to corny (see Pet Tornado.) Everything a museum gift shop should be. So, as Dorothy said, there's no place like home. Just ask the people of Greensburg. And go visit the Big Well.

The biggest hand dug well in the world! This place is a must see! They have rebuilt the town since the tornado in 2007 and everything is coming up. The well isn't used anymore but you can see how deep and wide it is. You can even throw a coin into the well to wish. This was definitely a highlight during my roadtrip.

Very interesting museum with a lot of history about the town before and after the tornado. There's a place for kids to play and is a hop skip and a jump from downtown. Very cool sidestop

    All the way down....

How long do you usually stay there?

Hi Wendy! How long a guest stays is completely up to them. The tour is self-guided so stay all day (9-6 M-S; 1-6 Sun) or spend 20-30 minutes. No matter the length of the visit, guests are sure to be impressed by our museum and the City of Greensburg.

I was hoping to see a wooden structure with all its glory and warscars... But no wood was used so the fort was trenches and mudhuts... This town/village houses 160 people and some government military institutions as the name changed to the Kansas Soldierss' Home back in 1890!!! The fort was built in 1865 to protect pioneers traversing the santa fe trail heading to the southwest (new mexico territories). All skirmishes westward would besed in fort dodge since 900 miles north or south would get you close to canada and mejico. Plus this is 1300 miles from disneyland! Basically the "Plain" Indian campaigns were based from here. Needless to say it took five or so years to handle the Comanche and Kiowa tribes (im not trivializing genocide). The fort left all indian skirmishes to small raids rather than battles. General Custer was based here and his home is a museum now. Although the fort had a short life span, this spot was super important with manifest destiny post civil war. And yes, western kansas was confederate but so far out, western kansas had little influence for the civil war. Forts started popping up in surrounding areas, thanks to railroad expansion thus leading to firt dodge's limited lifespan. Fyi. Everything closed on sunday. I missed the museum :/

Twister is my favorite movie, so visiting was huge for me. The ladies at the museum had so much information and behind-the-scenes knowledge. There are artifacts from the originally movie, photos, letters, costumes and even THE original Dorothy from the movie. There are pieces from the new Twisters movie, including the yellow barrels and trailer used in the film. The museum is free, but they operate on donations, so please donate to keep this gem open. I surprised my wife (cue the eye roll ) with a two-hour drive from Edmond to visit the filming location. The drive through rural Oklahoma was enjoyable and actually helped set the mood for thinking about the movie and why this area was chosen. The museum is housed in what was once the production office during filming, which is a neat piece of history in itself. Inside you'll find movie memorabilia, photos from the set, props, Dorothy, the yellow "Twister" barrels, a Twister pinball machine (which was donated by Bill Paxton), and plenty of behind-the-scenes items that fans will appreciate. The highlight of our visit was Linda, the museum host. Lori and I were the only visitors, so we had the opportunity to ask lots of questions. Linda was friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to share stories about the filming and the town's connection to the movie. She definitely made the visit more enjoyable. We spent about 30 minutes exploring everything. So, was it worth a two-hour drive? That depends. If you're a die-hard Twister fan, a storm-chasing enthusiast, or someone like me who enjoys checking unique Oklahoma destinations off a retirement bucket list, I'd say yes. If you're simply looking for a major museum experience, you may find it a little underwhelming. For me, it was a fun adventure, an enjoyable drive through Oklahoma, and another memorable stop on our travels. Rating: (3/5) - Worth visiting if it matches your interests, especially if you're already exploring north-central Oklahoma.
