The main space is divided into 3 parts and likewise upstairs. Overall there is quite a lot of wall space and I find it a pleasure to walk around in as it never gets very busy, probably due to it's location. They show a wide variety of contemporary art here. Whenever I have been here I have never been disappointed with the standard of work they exhibit. They have a little book shop to the right as you come in the door which sells some great art magazines such as Art Monthly and Modern Painters. The staff here always have a smile on their face .

There was also a larger exhibition titled 'What a relief' which showcased work mounted on the wall but not flat to it. Some amazing pieces by some great artists. This is the first gallery I went to as a new resident to London - and, as a total street/guerrilla…read moreart enthusiast, I was really impressed. The gallery is in East London's bustling Brick Lane, sitting quite contentedly in a dank, graffiti-covered alley that on gallery opening nights is filled with hip-looking young folk (many who are also surreptitiously brandishing paste-up materials and paint pens, bent on tagging every open space when no one is looking). The night I went here was the RSVP preview of Stolen Space's "Wild Fantasies" show, which features several posters of the "Dont Panic" tradition - many of which were created by our generation's most well-known street artists, from D*Face to Banksy to Shepard Fairey of OBEY/Obama poster fame. Free drinks abounded and the place was packed to the rafters. Overall, it's obvious that this gallery has a true appreciation for the ethos and philosophy behind street art - many of its founders are street artists themselves. Squabbles about the rammifications of the commercialization of street art aside, this is a reputable spot to sample the work of respected urban/street artists with a political, street-originated bent. A tip: be sure to grab a Don't Panic promo package on your way out. They're free and distributed around the city, but this gallery is the source. They're filled with flyers and posters for London street/nightlife events coming up.
If you are cursing because you are in London on the wrong days to visit Brick Lane for the market,…read morethen don't despair, there's still reason to visit. Brick Lane and the surrounding streets are a hot spot for graffiti/street art. Every major name is likely to be represented, though you never know what you will find. Some last for ages, some get washed off or over-written, but there's always something new coming up. It's not just the lane itself: wander down some of the side streets. The smaller alleys are also worth exploring, but be aware that they may be smelly! You'll also find that many of the Indian restaurants etc are open during the week. Of course, it's easier to get a good look at the art and maybe take some photos when the streets aren't full of Sunday crowds. Please look at the photos: these are only a small fraction of what can be seen. There's actually some pretty major stuff I didn't get pics of as dusk was setting in.

Plus, the high ceilings and window in the back add to the feeling of space. The best thing about this gallery, however, is the downstairs bit. This place had reasonably priced items by smaller artists that made it very approachable. I bought a piece for like 400, which in the scheme of something hanging on your walls for decades isn't too bad. I visited a bunch of other galleries that were stuffy and had very expensive stuff. This gallery has a lot of things that regular, "non-art", people would buy and hang on their wall. Unfortunately the room was lit from lights on the floor, which at times caused problems because it was so dark and then suddenly there was a light shining in your eyes! But it looked cool. Regrettably, it didn't feel cool - that place got hot hot hot and there was no ventilation, so it wasn't long before the walls and floor (a bit dangerous!) were wet. I know that fans were offered, they were just too loud and would have hindered the enjoyment of the music. It was great that it was bring your own bottle, and there was a tap that was used to fill water buckets up so we didn't get dehydrated. There was also a little section that was used as a cloakroom. The toilets were interesting: 3 stalls - one was out of order, one didn't have a lock and the other was fine. These were multi-gender. There was a little sink and soap to wash your hands. It was great that we had the venue all night, leaving at 6am, and I would definitely recommend the venue for arty/ alternative events - particularly if they are not as active as a dance festival all-night party!
