My appointment was at noon on a Saturday and there was no wait, in fact, Ashley sat me down a little early to get hair done. I didn't have any reference photos but mentioned my ideas and she ended up giving me soft waves and a half up do with a Dutch braid - I got so many compliments on my hair. She's so talented and so sweet! Was probably done within 40-45 min. I then had my appointment with Michelle around 12:45 for makeup. Showed her a few photos, mentioned I didn't want anything too over the top / was interested in soft glam. She asked my preferences throughout the appointment and it was very relaxing to sit under her care. I ended up with an understated, soft glam look that I loved! She probably took about 30 min or so. I'm not sure what I was expecting, I guess I pictured a true "blowout" look. Something with more volume and something that looked like out of a salon versus a job I think I could have done better myself at home. The "blowout" curls or whatever was done by Dorothy, fell within the hour and was flat, stringy and looked unkempt. I called to let them know and someone called me back but I couldn't answer so I thought I'd just leave a review. I was really disappointed with my recent experience. I had booked hair and makeup appointments for my mom and sister, who flew in from Canada to celebrate my baby shower, after reading so many great reviews. The stylist who did their hair was kind and did a great job. Unfortunately, the makeup was poorly done. The foundation didn't match their skin tones, there was no color correction, and the lipstick options were very limited. They ended up taking it off and doing it themselves at home. The bigger issue came during payment. Because of a recent update to their payment system, the charges had to be processed as separate transactions. Since my sister is from Canada, she explained that this would result in multiple foreign transaction fees. The stylist doing the payment called the owner or manager, I believe her name was Lindsay, to ask if anything could be done. From what my mom and sister heard on the call, Lindsay was dismissive and made it clear that there was no way around this. They ended up calling me during my baby shower to resolve it, which added stress to an already busy day. I provided my credit card details over the phone and had them charge the 4 transactions (2 hair, 2 makeup). The stylist I spoke with was polite and apologetic, but I was really disappointed by how the situation was handeled from a reputable business, and stylist that are really trying to help. Unfortunately, this experience left a bad impression, and I won't be coming back or recommending this place. Response to comment from business: Unfortunately some of what has been stated is false. It was 4 separate transactions and not 2 and yes for each transaction you get foreign transaction fees. The 4 were for hair and makeup for 2 people separately. Also regarding the makeup services, my sister had told her makeup artist multiple times that she was not happy with her makeup. Attempts were made to fix it but the options for foundation, lashes, lipsticks were limited. They did not have option for various complexions. Both mom and sister were happy with their hair. Regardless of the above, the customer service by Lindsay over the phone was absolutely ridiculous. If anyone treats their employees and speaks in a rude tone is highly unprofessional. read more

I normally see Sam, she knows exactly how I like my hair, but this time I took my daughter to get her hair done which is curly and not a lot of people are knowledgeable on how to work with curly hair. Just found my go-to local nail salon! This is a cute boutique-like salon on 5th street in downtown Huntington Beach. I noticed my nails had chipped and wanted it fixed immediately. They were able to promptly take me w/out a reservation on a Friday afternoon. I recently moved to the area & was in desperate need of finding a new nail stylist. I'd been here 2x before for mani/pedis, but wasn't sure I would commit to this salon bc they don't offer massage chairs. However, I was blown away today by Priscilla's attention to detail, promptness, friendliness, and communication. Priscilla ensured that I got exactly what I wanted (beautiful gel mani). She checked throughout that my needs were being met and that I would walk out satisfied with the mani. Some technicians take forever to do your nails but Priscilla got me in & out through the door! Decided to not do my own hair or makeup myself for my court wedding the day of. Called a few hours before the ceremony and they took me in for a dry style and makeup application. I'm so bad with names but the woman that did my hair did a great job. She gave me loose curls at first and changed it to tight curls based off my hair texture. After hair was done, she guided me to my makeup artist. After a quick consultation of what I was looking for she went straight to work. SUPER Sad and Disappointed. I got highlights from Michelle and really regret it because it turned out uneven with bleach bleeding and very yellow/orange with no dimension as if my hair was bleached without enough color. I have consulted 3 outside hair stylists and they all agreed that the blow down gave me a poor service that needed a root smudge, less bleach, and more toning. If I were the blow down owner or stylist I would have been mortified to let this unfinished hair walk out of the store and represent my company. The manager told me she would talk to the owner and give me a call and I've since called the store and requested a call of which has never come. I payed too much for this service because I was worried since they had my card on file. Disappointed with the service and the stylists' ability to fix a mistake. It was like pulling teeth to create a solution. I feel deserving of a refund. When debating the price they kept honing in on how the stylist spent so much of her time doing this. That is not the issue. I am willing to pay for someone's labor but not for the subsequent messed up color job. I regret paying for anything but the labor and haircut. I feel taken advantage of. I absolutely do not recommend getting color at The Blow Down, especially not from Michelle. The pictures clearly show why I was so horrified and it's unfortunate the blow down stylists tried so hard to convince me it was fine when it was so clearly not. I understand it's uncomfortable to make a mistake but they could have been more adamant about fixing it. I sincerely hope they learned from this. :( read more

I went in with the intention of getting a hair trim and my nails done, but my favorite aspect of the salon was the people. the ladies are SO kind and friendly, and also just very receptive to the experience I wanted to have. Raquel who did my nails did an EXCELLENT job of giving me mermaid nails, and just being thorough in giving me a proper manicure and pedicure. The leg massage was 100% everything. She's also just such a calming, loving presence which makes it relaxing to receive a mani-pedi. Lauren, who cut my hair took into account my curls with short hair and even taught me how to put my hair in a towel and perhaps, Samantha was my favorite- she gave me a fabulous blow out that lasted for days and worked with my layers and shoulder hair length. AND she shared how much she loved her salon family, which you could feel. Thank you to this family of bright, caring women that make the experience so worth it. I am truly impressed by this place. So much so I had to write a review. Lauren is gifted with color and on top of that she has a great personality. We had the best chat while doing my hair. The salon is decorated so cute. It's clean and the staff is friendly. They truly are a full service salon from cut, color, braiding, makeup, nail, accessories and more. And they even offer bottomless champagne and beer. You can't beat the location. It's right by the beach. What a much needed treat for myself.
