How I heard of this place: I was invited to my friend's birthday dinner, and this is where we were set to meet. A neighborhood establishment that I hadn't heard of until I showed up! We source our food and drink from the incredible bounty of our region as well as the diverse community of local artisans right here in Ballard, Fremont, and Phinney Ridge. Outdoors, a sidewalk patio, as well as a parking spot (likely from early Covid times), covered patio is also available for seating. A robust bar, intimate seating and music loud enough to hear, yet soft enough to carry dinnertime conversation. What I ordered: We started with a couple of orders of Fried Sage Brussels Sprouts ($14) - fried sage leaves and Brussels sprouts, tossed in a house honey-chili vinaigrette. Three of the eight of us selected the Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich ($18) - local, organic, fried chicken thigh, dill pickles, shaved iceberg lettuce, and garlic aioli on a soft kaiser bun, additional Swiss cheese ($2), served with fries. A perfect summer Elevening at The Blue Glass. From start to finish, the experience was fantastic. Their fish and chicken burgers were absolutely delicious - we opted for a side of ceasar salad. What an amazing little gem. This small neighborhood grub station has a full bar, and also delicious food. A wide range with an Italian flair, you will have short ribs and polenta, or chicken or fish sandwiches, to bolognese to very hearty salads to burrata cheese! Portion sizes are quite large, and the pricing is reflective, so just be aware you are getting large portions for the price. Drinks we spot on, however we also quite pricey. Just be aware. Our server was very attentive, there were two who were working the dinning room that night. Great small feel with big city tastes. There is outdoor seating but still a bit chilly to sit outside. Came here for Galentines Day with the ladies. There were 4 of us girls that wanted a quieter vibe and they were so kind to seat us outside in our own little area. Wait service was attentive at all the right times and made us feel welcome. The menu was simple, and I enjoyed that on a day like Valentine's Day because people don't need a large menu to choose something delicious here. Knocked down a star only because it was cold and they had a heater but didn't offer to turn it on for some reason. Terrible experience with my mom for Mother's Day. First off we were seated rudely even when having a reservation. They never brought us water. Then the slow waitress came and took our orders. The food took forever to arrive and when it did they forgot the side I asked for. My mom's salad was drenched in dressing to the point of ridiculous. The ice tea sucked and those breakfast potatoes were horrid. I don't get these great reviews. The waitress never checked on us once. Terrible all around. Finally tried this spot and can attest the food is delicious here. Recommend the Dungeness crab orzo. Staff was quick and friendly. And there is a happy hour. Reason for lack of star: the food doesn't match the ambience. Does that make sense? I walked in to what looked like a dive bar with Christmas lights and bar stools but the menu was pretty upscale and pricy. It didn't make sense to me. We hadn't been to The Blue Glass in a few years but it proved to be just as cozy, intimate and delicious as we recalled. Service was friendly and fast, and the place has a great welcoming vibe. We settled into a table next to several gals who were enjoying their Ahi tuna and a generous burger with truffle fries. 'Try one!' they said and held a plate out--you don't get that everywhere but that's the friendly vibe here. Hubby had the lobster risotto which he enjoyed; I had the crab roll which was rich and luscious--and yes, I went for the truffle fries. They kicked us out, no joke, super rude staff. We used to love this place. And yes they have decent food, but man they have gone down hill. We've lived close to the spot for years and they are usually jamming, busy, and thriving. However, we were there recently on a weekend and there were only 5 people in the spot which we thought was odd, then we noticed that the staff had completely turned over, no one we knew there. And we have been known to go pretty often. We ordered drinks and ordered our meal and were served. Then 10 mins before close they did last call which was fine. But we were still finishing our drinks, and then all of a sudden, one of the waitresses comes over and says "can I clean up the glasses, we are closed" this was right at 9pm. It was so rude. Will not be returning to this place. Used to be such a good neighborhood spot. But has totally gone downhill. It's super sad. read more

I had not eaten here in a few years. I took a friend who was visiting from out of town. We both got burgers, he requested medium-well and I requested medium-rare. My burger was on the rare side of medium rare, as was my friend's burger. He did not complain, he is just that kind of person. He ate about half of the burger. The fries were great. The service was great. The quality of the beef was great. If you are going to charge over $20 for a burger, cook it as requested. That is just unacceptable. It was busy, but not so busy the chef did not have time to cook the burger's as requested. The wait staff repeated our order back to us and got our preference correct. read more

Two of people in our party of three wanted to share a burger. We were not told about the sharing fee of $5.00 by the waitress - nor did it mention this on the menu, it just appeared unexpectedly on the bill. The other person in our party ordered clam linguine. We could not understand how they somehow thought the clam linguine was also going to be shared between two and brought it on two separate plates. When it was brought back on one plate the pasta was lukewarm, over cooked, tasted starchy as if left to sit in the hot water too long and tasted just awful. Supposedly the clam linguine has a white wine sauce, tasted like pasta water and olive oil - zero flavor. The temperature in the restaurant was way too hot, had to have been 75-80 degrees where we were sitting; my glasses were steaming up. The waitress agreed that it was uncomfortably hot and had to open the front door numerous times to cool it down. I had to go outside because it was uncomfortably warm. The waitstaff agreed the temperature was a problem but then someone else came out and told us they had to close the door because some people were getting cold. One of the overhead fans was broken. There is something seriously wrong with the temperature control system. This was not a good experience and the food was way over priced for the quality. I definitely do not recommend this restaurant. I have heard a lot of very good things about the blue glass. I've been looking forward to eating there for a long time. Finally the stars were aligned and we decided to go. We didn't have reservations but were waitlisted. Only one table was available when we arrived that could sit the four of us. It was a tall table with tall stools to sit on. I found the stools a bit uncomfortable and difficult to scoot in towards the table. Service was okay. Nothing special. One small snafu. We ordered mussels and got Brussels sprouts. Understandable mistake. Remedied. My son had the rib eye steak. I thought it was just okay, both in flavor and texture. I have eaten better. My niece had a lobster roll which she liked. My personal opinion generally speaking is there's never enough contrast between the flavor of the lobster and the bready roll. My wife ordered the ahi tuna. Fantastic! Best thing we ordered! I had burrata, probably misspelled. Basically bread plus a soft mozzarella cheese with olives. Not what I really wanted. My mistake. Yes. The bread was lovely. Other than the mussels we also ordered a large beet salad. Excellent. All in all more food than we needed. I do not fault the server for this but I have had servers tell us that we already had enough. The Blue Glass is a nice addition to the neighborhood. I'm glad that they are doing well. And I'm happy that I got the chance to try it. However once was enough. I probably won't be returning. read more

My friend and I ate here for brunch and both ordered the braised short rib & kimchi benedict. It was really flavorful and the potatoes were nice and crispy. However, our food came out cold which was disappointing. The service was another disappointment. Our glasses of water were dirty (you could still see a lipstick mark on my glass), so we asked for new glasses of water. We were never brought out clean glasses of water. It looked like there was only one server/bartender for the entire restaurant and patio!! Which could also explain why our food came out cold if it was sitting there for a bit. My friend had also ordered a side a bacon, which was forgotten about and she had to ask for it again. I'm glad there was the $20 off $100 Yelp deal that we used. My wife and I have now been to The Blue Glass twice. It seems to be in search of its identity. First, they have a few very expensive cocktails on the menu that feature premium booze (Blanton's and Weller whiskeys) but the lowest-end additional ingredients. For instance, the $20 Manhattan is made with Blanton's and Gallo sweet vermouth. It's shockingly poor form. It signals bottom-of-the-barrel taste and budget which signals an outfit taking major shortcuts. This is made ever more apparent when considering the expensive Paloma my wife ordered that was made with bottled grapefruit juice. Again, not cool. On the food front, we've ordered the burger, ribeye, chicken sandwich, Caesar salad, and the coconut prawns. All were good, save for the prawns which appeared to just be reheated, commercially produced generic items. I'm hoping the bar situation improves because I'd love to have a solid, regular place for a quality cocktail and burger while watching a game. Given the obvious penny-pinching, I don't think The Blue Glass is the place. read more

The spot was pleasant enough with attentive bartender and waitstaff. It also had indoor and outdoor parklet seating. The happy hour menu was rather pricey and did not align with their website at the time. Three stars with an additional for surviving the pandemic. Cool spot with drinks and yummy bites! Brussel Sprouts ($12) were crispy, glazed/slightly sweet, and delightfully charred but you really have to like oil - it was swimming in a pool of it. Buratta ($13) was soft and fresh, loved the sweet cherry tomatoes that came with it. Wish it came with more bread though! Four small slices couldn't hold all the burrata. Ahi Sandwich ($17) was great and light tasting with a nutty sesame crust! It was slightly small but the slab of tuna was super thick. After a full week of non-stop meals out in Seattle and Portland, I can easily declare The Blue Glass as the winning and most memorable restaurant. It's high praise, because every meal we had across the two cities was excellent and some had the bonus of astounding waterfront views. But The Blue Glass - off the beaten tourist path and worth the ride - was the stand-out. It was one of those rare meals where I lost track of time and place because I was able to completely relax and be in the moment. The room was cozy and inviting, the service was just right, and my short ribs on polenta were out of this world. I ate a lot of great food last week but that dish was by far the best. We came here for a quick lil celebratory dinner during a normal weeknight which worked out for us since there was no wait to get seated. I really enjoyed the interior decor as it wasn't too dark creating a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere. The food was very delicious as I ordered the braised beef with squash and mashed potatoes. I wish I lived in this neighborhood so I could make this my neighborhood spot. Their menu is chock full of really mouth watering items. Literally everything I ordered I consumed in my car before even making it home. Okay well it was filling so I save most of the brussels sprouts for another day and skipped the table bread, but it was ah-mahzing. This neighborhood has several good restaurants back to back so parking can be a challenge - luckily it's a quick takeout process so lots of people are in and out of the spaces quickly. Starters: every appetizer we had was fantastic. The beet salad was well dressed and the earthy flavor was balanced out with a bit of sweet. Even though it was a bit too sweet for my taste the Brussels sprouts were a favorite at the table, so instead I went all in on the roasted cauliflower which was tasty but could have used a bit of char on the roast. Meals: I got the trout and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. Cannot recommend this enough as I would go back for it again and again. The kitchen was kind enough to sub out the rice for broccolini and so It can't get any better than that for me. I had a taste of my friends risotto and it was fantastic with the exception of the mama lils peppers. I love those peppers but they cut though and overpowered the subtler mushroom flavors in the dish. I did manage to wrangle a bite with minimal pepper influence and it was stellar. My husband enjoyed the prawn pappardelle, which was his second choice as the fish tacos were sold out (and they looked incredible), but said it was a little bit watery for his personal liking but the flavors were all solid. Overall a fantastic experience. Service was top notch, clearly labeled gluten free/celiac options, portions are larger than I would have expected and the food was well prepared and flavorful.
