Went here last night on the strength of positive reviews elsewhere, but was very disappointed.
Perhaps we caught them on a bad day, but what we got was poor food and unfriendly service (to the point of stroppy, at times). As diners, it felt very much like we were an imposition to the bar staff (there were no dedicated waiting staff). The atmosphere in the dining area overall was somewhat marred by the 'laddish' bar area.
So, a catalogue of minor disasters from start to finish, really...first off, the barman misheard our drinks order and gave us the wrong drinks. Instead of an apology when this was politely pointed out, we were met with a glare and no replacement drinks were offered.
The battered fish was OK, but the chips were not fresh and tasted like they'd been reheated; my rather stingy portion of risotto was bland, tasteless, under-seasoned, and the consistency of a kedgeree (when this was brought to the attention of the chef, the waiter came back somewhat aggressively saying 'the chef says a risotto is not meant to be creamy'!). I was offered a replacement, but given that the chef didn't appear to know what a risotto is supposed to be like, and presumably thought the taste (or lack thereof) of the previous attempt was acceptable, I declined. They did oblige the third guest in our party with a special order of a goat's cheese salad (because the only veggie option was the risotto otherwise), and this was OK, but very small for a main course (and still £10).
After such disappointing mains, we didn't stick around for desserts (in any case, we weren't offered any), and left the place still slightly hungry, £40 lighter of pocket, and with a bitter taste in our mouths!
Incidentally, we had tried to eat here previously on a Sunday lunchtime, but the only veggie option offered on a Sunday is a cheese Ploughman's, so we left again immediately! Suffice to say, we will not ever be trying here again. read more
