As a student in Manchester, however, you cannot fail to have heard about the Didsbury Dozen - a pub crawl targeting 12 of Didsbury's watering holes. I personally never did the dozen, but I knew several people who did. There are several pubs that welcome the pub crawlers with open arms, several that would probably rather they weren't there but couldn't afford to kick them out, and a couple who are totally against the concept and will not allow pub crawlers onto their premises. Fletcher Moss is an example of the latter, and I had heard stories about the nasty spoil-sport of a manager at this pub. However, five years on, and I am much older and wiser. I appreciate good beer and music that will not drown out your conversation. On setting foot in the Fletcher Moss I was not at all surprised that the management had refused to serve pub crawlers. It is a quiet CAMRA pub with no loud music and no football. Some would class this as a boring pub, but the older I'm getting the more I find myself enjoying visits to places like this.

Whether this was a good/bad/average experience I'm not sure - but it was definitely an experience! Put it this way, on a Saturday night - the main pub actually seems to become a dance floor playing all the classics of soul while middle/later age peeps put on their glad rags and dance around living the dream like John Travolta in Saturday night fever. And why not... What's weird is that everyone is still just sat around drinking their pints of Hydes casually while the queue for the bar merges with the 'dance floor' - put it this way, one bump out of the queue and you could find yourself doing the waltz with a mid 50's blonde in a matter of moments. Beer is fairly average Hydes stuff (Summer Ale was best of a bad bunch) - but for entertainment value and a sense of WTF - this was a cool night out.

Oh, but this means I can go to Jackson's boat! WIN! So, I cycle down the Mersey - well, down the path technically! And onward. Just about managed to go past Chorlton Water park and Jackson's Boat on the way out, and carry on to Sale Water park. This I feel means I'm definitely going to have earn't a pint. The sun really was blazing, and there were many people out walking their dogs, running along the banks or even paddling a kayak along the river. I stopped briefly as the kayak appeared to have got stuck on the rocks of a rapids section, and internally cheered them on as they floated on again. Canadian geese were also out en masse - perhaps they felt Manchester was better in summer? I reckon!! After a circuit of the Sale Water park, and the sun setting it was definitely time for the return journey. AND THAT WELL EARNT BEER. Hellooo Jacksons! It's a large outdoor area, and plenty of others where there with their bikes. And a rarity for Manchester, dogs too. They're well catered for, and the pub even supplies dog bowls and water for hot dogs! Humans are well catered for too with a selection of 3 ales on tap, including both Landlord and Black Sheep! The stable quality ales. My beer was refreshing, and I'm sure tasted even better because I got off my arse that evening! It's been awhile since I was here - probably was a Sunday afternoon date, with a fairly good traditional Sunday roast meal. The inside has that traditional pub feel & has a variety of different sections. So long since I've been that the tram line also hadn't been put in. It's in the distance, and not going to cause any interference with chilling out. So in summary. Go for a walk or a cycle - it's doable from Chorlton, Withington, West Didsbury easily. Take a mate or a date. Grab a beer after. Relax.

It was a…read moresummer's afternoon and the beer garden was full of families and dog-walkers who had stopped to rehydrate themselves after a walk down the sunny Mersey or around the water park. Since then I have visited this pub on numerous occasions and always been pleased with the service and atmosphere. OK, so there's not a huge range of bottled foreign lagers available like there is in the majority of pubs and bars in Chorlton, but there is a sufficient range of lagers, ales and ciders. They also serve standard pub fare, which looks pretty tasty. On a recent snow day my housemate and I decided to go for a stroll down the Mersey - any excuse for a visit to this pub! With the roads to the pub impassable and with heavy snow still falling I had guessed that we'd probably be some of the only people there. How wrong I was! The place was packed to the rafters and the beer garden staged a huge snowball fight amongst the punters (photos on the pub's website). All in all Jackson's Boat is a great pub to relax in the sun or to shelter from the snow.

Nothing of any real interest. The new owners have spruced the venue up, improving the decor, ambiance, food offering, and most important, the beer. It's quite a transformation. The staff are friendly and welcoming, we've often been provided with stunningly good complimentary chips or nachos..... but.. It's all done with a bit of chaos thrown in. We've had beers go off with no one available to put more on, pumps not working, toilet lights not working, food taking immense lengths of time to appear, handles missing off critical doors etc etc. On one occasion it took over 30 minutes to get 8 pints out, a number of other times have come worryingly close to that. The Salford is nestled in an up and coming little real ale neighbourhood. On the trail between the Kings and the New Oxford with the Black Lion not far away either, it has the potential to do well if it can make a name for itself. The staff and management are charming, but somehow seem a little green to the running of such an establishment. If some of the basics can be mastered, this could really be a place to watch.

After a lazy Sunday at home, a short walk down the road to the Salford Arms was probably all we needed. It was empty bar some people playing pool, but felt welcoming as opposed to "there's a reason noone's here." Staff were attentive and happy to pour tasting samples before selecting a full pint. Decorations around the bar are made up of the keg signage, giving lots to look at while you're waiting for your pint to be pulled. There's also a tonne of signage and decoration around the pub to cast your eyes across; along with two TV screens and the jukebox, you also have lots of 'quotes' and memorabilia. 30 minutes before last orders someone from behind the bar went round the occupied tables to advise they'd be closing soon - but if we wanted one more drink they'd be happy to fetch it for us. Nice little touch. The clientele who arrived after us were interesting, especially when they decided to play Ed Sheeran's 'Thinking Out Loud' on a loop via the jukebox. They were of little significance on this occasion, but I don't think I could handle a whole pub full of them! Another option for those lazy days.

Still, it's as green as the walls, and though the furnishing have seen better days and barrels are used as tables, it's a pretty decent pub to spend some time in and make new friends.

The pub is owned by the Holt Brewery, meaning that the main lagers and ales are all 'own brand.' As a result they're dead cheap and even better, they taste just fine. Marie the landlady adds a bit of flair with her boisterous personality when she's around, and the locals are friendly; you'll find them hidden away in the back 'vault' section of the pub. There's a pool table, darts, bar snacks and plenty of comfy seating. The only thing wrong with Hyde Park Corner is that there aren't more punters! The pub sprawls around a two-sided bar and the place can feel a bit dead at times.

We have been known to cause problems, so I was initially a bit worried that the bar staff would struggle to control us if one thing led to another. However, they managed to restrain a few of my mates quite well when they tried having it out with an individual who claimed that we were 'southern' - which we are. Obviously the fact that some of us did cause a problem and had it out with locals was negative but that was expected as the lads and I are widely renowned for that. I find that this pub, with exceptional ambience and strong community links, gave us a good experience and overall handled us really well. The pricing was reasonable, leading the posse to drink an uncouth amount of beer (which we are regarded to frequently do so), so I would 100% return here. Unfortunately, I am not sure when a return to Wigan is imminent.
