Whisky Galore Oh…read moreboy, if you know your Scottish Cities and their Pubs then you will know what I mean when I say the Grill is to Aberdeen what that Horseshoe is to Glasgow and The Guildford (Or Café Royal, or Bow Bar) is to Edinburgh. And for those of you who don't know your Scottish Cities and their Pubs, allow me to clarify - It's ICONIC!! So, things you need to know, firstly they are rumoured to have the largest Whisky selection in Scotland (RUMOURED). I mean it is ridiculous, I'm sure if a fire started here it would blow up half of Union Street and said explosion could be seen from the Moon. So if you like your Whisky then this is a must visit pub. Secondly, this pub is older than you will ever be, My dad drank here when he was 5, and now he is 80, and people drank there before he was born. It's so old that they had to install ladies toilets a while back as there weren't any - and ladies are allowed to drink alongside men these days! Lastly, it might look like a dump outside, but don't mistake dump for character. This has more character than Monty Python. The floor clearly used to be strewn with sawdust back in the days, and some of the staff have seen more than their fair share of breakfasts - but that all adds to the experience. The experience here is guaranteed to be memorable for all the right reasons!

It is bloody long. The bar is also bloody long. By the way, it is pub and not a Grill. They decided to turn it from a restaurant to a pub around 1900 and never got around to changing the name. Let us get down to the essentials. This is about whisky and pilgrims and Scotland and finding places with a lot of bottles of the aforementioned. Well the Grill has it. 500 bottles. Let that number sink in. One dram a day. After spending a year performing that activity and you have not finished. They have some of the oldest drams on sale anywhere in the world - a 1938 Macallan, Several 1930 Malts and the legendary Black Bowmore. Voted in "Bar of the Year" in 2008 by Whisky Magazine and staffed with folks with Whisky expertise. If you do not like Whisky, then grab an ale and soak in the amazing architecture of this place. CAMRA has named this place as the most northerly Scottish "Pub Interior of Outstanding Historic Interest". So much to offer, you cannot lose by visiting this place. Pilgrims Ho!

It is just a relaxed pub on most days, with a quiz night on Mondays, with plenty of TVs showing futball and cricket. A long bar along the right as you walk in, tables scattered about. A cozy layout, with personable and fun bartenders. They have their own house pub beer, Rabbies, which is just a nitro Bitter. They also have a cask of Timothy Taylor Landlord. Which is not in particularly good shape, but still good on them for caring cask. A handful of Scotches available. All in all just a nice chill spot for a pint, or a dram.

The night before being able to eat there, we walked in rather late, having drove into town about 8:30. Sadly the kitchen was closed; while huddled up outside trying to find a place to eat, two gentlemen staff came outside, eager to help us find somewhere to eat - their suggestions made sure we did not go hungry! Sad, I didn't get their names, one was the bartender and it was on a busy trivia night. We returned the next night and made the dinner service- it was spectacular! Yolanda was our main server and she was epic! Fun, engaging but attentive with other guests as well. The other staff were wonderful in helping us at the bar, serving, etc. The food was top drawer - best steak pie I had in Scotland! Wonderful flavor (I can always use a touch more seasoning tho), the gravy spoke for itself, tender, juicy meat, flaky pastry. So good!!! Next time we'll sit in the more classic pub-decorated area, the largely restaurant-feel area was cozy and homey, quieter. The menu, the meal, the service was faultless and we all had the same roast rib of Scotch beef. However, the stereophonic screaming of babies and toddlers was unbearable. I could see from the glances of other customers that we were not the only ones who felt that it was rather irritating. I have three grown children but I would never have taken them to a more upmarket restaurant for lunch if they were prone to that behaviour. I am sure the parents were struggling and possibly felt some embarrassment and could not enjoy their meals. There is absolutely nothing wrong with small children screaming, but it was unexpected in a restaurant of such pleasant ambiance and food.

I could have eaten another of the cheesesteak but instead I filled myself up with more cocktails. I would recommend the milkshakes, we tried the boozy brulada and chocolate salty balls and they did not disapoint. We ended our visit with two other cocktails, the taste the rainbow and caramel jack (which was my partners but wish I had gotten for myself). We actually left the football a little early (I mean, who could predict that Aberdeen would score a goal in extra time?! Oops) so we got here and grabbed a beer and a seat. There wasn't a huge football crowd here later on so don't go thinking it's a football pub, it definitely isn't. It's got more of a hipster vibe - guys playing jenga in the pub on a Saturday afternoon - but in a charming way. There's a great list of beers on the wall and it's easy to see prices, which ones are available and aren't etc. We both went for the Bottle Cap IPA at £5.20 a pint which was just delicious. We had about an hour to kill before our dinner booking and as I am ever-hungry, ordered a portion of chicken strips. The guy behind the bar did some epic upselling and we added on cheesy garlic bread for just £1.50. He was super friendly and chatty, and recommended a bar to us for after dinner as well as a cocktail which we were pretty impressed by. The food wasn't anything out of this world, but it was tasty, generous portions and a great price. All up, this is somewhere I'd definitely head back to as soon as I go back to Aberdeen.
