The only female bartender there Saturday night 12/6 was extremely rude and denied me service for not tipping. I ordered two drinks the first time and realized I paid with the wrong card that did not belong to me. So I didn't put a tip and figured I would add it to the next set of drinks. I repeat, a card that was NOT mine that I accidentally had in my wallet. Take note my partner and I always tip 5-10 for every round of drinks. Well not long after I go back for another round of drinks, and I noticed the lady kept skipping over me and I waited for a hot while. Seems like she also spoke to the male bartender about refusing us service because he ignored us too. Then she comes up to me and says "sucks having to wait" and says that this is what happens when you don't tip. Rude. Worst bar/club. Its only convenience is the fact that it's next door to goathill. They dim the lights and cramp everyone in the same room so it seems like a dance floor. You can't even get to the restrooms. The bathrooms are gross and don't have any toilet paper toward the end of the night. All 3 stalls were out. So ridiculous. We ended up leaving because it was so tight that everyone bumped into me and my drink. So annoying. The bartenders are cool but they're better at goat hill. I went to the Boulevard about a month ago. I ordered a whiskey, the bartender brought me a whiskey, then I drank the whiskey--after that things took a turn to the outright sublime. Some random beach city woman who was probably seven years younger than me stopped dropping it low to the house music to hold a terrible conversation with me--until DJ Stevedub came out of nowhere, set up his dopest Stevedub turntables and turned the whole bleeping BLVD into a raucous dance party. The first hip hop beat Steve dropped sent the beach city woman sailing back to her friend group, and they all began dancing like absolute freak-a-zoids. Much like the rest of the people present at the bar. Somewhere between the first of many delicious Stevedub mixes and the moment when everyone was shouting the lyrics to an Afroman song--all boogie broke loose like an old booger. Even the muscled up frat/college boys had nothing better to do than twerk to the Yin Yang Twins and Nelly Furtado whilst Stevedub cued up or scratched in another banger. Credit to the BLVD for having a practiced master of the turntables like Stevedub come through. 5 stars. read more

Walked in with friends cause we needed to pass time. If you like punk rock from the 2000's this is the place to be. Music felt very nostalgic for me so I loved it. My friend and I loved the whiskey sours we had. Might be the best we've ever gotten. They also have a taco truck that regularly comes by and they're nice enough to allow food inside from the truck. We never got to experience the food or drinks because the security staff was so obnoxious we left immediately upon entering. We had just had dinner across the street at Triangle Square and hopped around to a few restaurants over there (which is what I recommend) then decided to venture across Harbor Blvd. to "The Boulevard". It was 9pm on a Saturday night, and we were literally the only people there (6 40+ year olds, all couples). They checked all our IDs which is totally fine, but then they interrogated us as to whether we had weapons, checked our belt lines and purses, asked if we had any knives or guns. One of us said "not to my knowledge" the bouncer lashed back ANSWER THE QUESTION! We all agreed that they were either roid raging or their clientele has been very troublesome and they feel the need to shake everyone down that walks in, assuming they're a member of the cryps. Probably the 2nd one, cause none of them were very muscular. Regardless, the place to be is across the street at Triangle Square where all the staff we encountered were great, and the empty bar at the Boulevard confirmed that. read more

If you appreciate finely made cocktails in an old school setting, you will love the Boulevard. We stopped by one afternoon while it was quiet just to check out the throwback red booth seating and muted gold ceiling tiles and couldn't resist ordering a drink. We were the only ones in the bar so our bartender put time into crafting standard drinks that wowed us. Old Fashioned - Rye, bitters, sugar and a fat square ice cube with an orange peel. This was done so right and so proper. The guys that ordered them kept on repeating to me, "This is a really good Old Fashioned." I know it is because I had some of it. Whiskey Sour - When I saw him cracking open an egg and rolling the egg yolk back and forth between the egg shells to get all the egg white out I knew I was in for a treat. Old Forester was the base whiskey, then shaken with egg white, lemon juice and couple of dashes of bitters over the lightly foamy top. Creamy, whiskey goodness. I could've stayed here for a couple of hours and put away four of these if I wasn't with co-workers. They have an extensive and impressive whiskey selection. Pappy Van Winkle, are you serious? YES! Laphroig, Macallan, Whistle Pig, Glenfiddich... Physically the lounge is pretty big as it has a row of booths in the main room and then an equal number of booths in the room right behind it. It's right next door to Goat Hill Tavern and they share the same entrance area. Both bars are great, but if you're feeling that 60s meets hipster vibe, slide on over to the Boulevard. DO NOT GO HERE!!! THEY ROOFIE PEOPLE!!!! Speaking out about this as it seems like nobody else will. Was here for the first time on Saturday night April 17th to meet for a drink and catch up with my friends. Me and one of my girls ended up blacking out within the 30 mins after barely sipping ONE DRINK! We hadn't been drinking anywhere else that night. Thank God for our friends who ended up taking care of us as we were completely incoherent. The next day to say we were ill would be an understatement. Never felt anything like this. Decided to go take a drug test and it came back positive for OPIOIDS AND BENZODIAZEPINE. We filed a police report and the officer did not seem to care much. Instead he made a remark about the drink we ordered being possibly "too strong". The manager of the bar refused to shows us video surveillance footage of that night and said we don't have enough evidence. I took this matter to social media and more victims came forward. I looked back to my review from 9 months ago and I had to think, wow!..., was that only 9 months ago?! Hanging out late on a quiet industry kind of Monday night has turned into a friend soaked venue of whiskey loving and good times. The Boulevards sorted love affair with the brown spirit has given birth to the '1824 Whiskey Society'. Nothing ominous or stuffy, just people with a common appreciation for whiskeys and all things about them. Neat, on the rock or in a cocktail, this is the place you are invited to share in the experience with the rest of us. If you happen to frequent any of the Newport/Mesa restaurants odds are you'll run into one if not a few familiar faces from the scene. Blood Orange Cosmo!!! My friend and I were in the area and decided to drop in at the Goat Hill Tavern for a beer. As I pulled into the back parking lot I saw that the Helm next door was gone and now The Boulevard. Curiosity got the best of me so I sent a text message to my friend asking if he wanted to meet there instead. The interior was nice, a huge difference from the Goat Hill's divey feel. Their menu seemed to consist of craft beer and cocktails. It is definitely a nice place to meet co-workers after work or even host a birthday get together. I read that they encourage groups to have their party there and they can put together some special priced drinks. My Blood Orange Cosmo was very good and I felt $8 was quite reasonable. That same drink would probably cost about $12 at most bars in LA. Make sure to look on the chalk board at the bar for their daily specials. The day I went they had a buy 1 get 1 free deal on Moscow Mules. Not bad...I didn't get a chance to try it but next time I'll make sure to look on their board first. Minus one star because I did ask if they had any drink special and the bartender answered "All our drinks are special". I wish he would have pointed at the board with the special. We were there on a Sunday around 4pm so I hoped they had some sort of special which they did but didn't tell me. But this place is much more "me" than the Goat Hill so I'd be open to going back to see what sort of crowd they bring in on Friday's and Saturday's. read more

The other night I came here and went to the GoatHill side to use the restroom real quick. But when I tried to come back, they had blocked the shared hall so I couldn't get back in. Usually I wouldn't care but I had left my purse sitting in a booth and I obviously needed to get it back and was panicking. I tried to come in through the front entrance but they weren't letting anyone in, only people leaving. I tried to explain and plead with the employee guarding the door that my purse was in there, it had my ID, my money and my house keys and he didn't give a shit. None of the employees would help and gave me a "that's not my problem" attitude. I wasn't even trying to stay, I just wanted my purse back! Right next to the Goat but WAY BETTER! Nicely laid out, pretty ceiling tiles but understated otherwise. Lots of parking behind - shares the same lot as the Goat and therefore has 2 entrances: back door and front door. Loved the DJ - so clever. I told him like 10x and he even said "I appreciate you" - humble talent is the best! My friend had her birthday end up here so we were super happy to have such an amazing set of songs to singalong and dance to. I was driving so I didn't partake in all the shots but the bartenders were moving as quickly as they could. There's only one bar but it is the length of the place w/ 3-4 bartenders running around so it's enough. Has a small 1ft stage with DJ could maybe be a tad smaller to make more dance floor but otherwise, great fun and decent dance ability next to the bar. The beauty of this place is all the booths that don't require reservation, the sweet Saturday night DJ and the amazing amount of parking available. Definitely a 20s/30s bar - I didn't feel like there were too many older than that. It got pretty messy towards the end of the night and there was actually a fight that broke out near the "dance floor" but the bouncers and a super human bartender hurdled over the bar to help! It all happened so suddenly... I got shoved but was happy that was all. You can't always help the clientele that comes to your bar (or those that get too hot) but you can see the character of the staff shine through (excellent responsibility and swift removal effort of the aggressors) so I'd definitely return. read more

Hubs and I had a night out and planned to check out Goat Hill Tavern (next door) since we heard they have over 150+ beers on tap. I'm not much of a beer drinker, so when hubs ordered a beer at Goat Hill, the bartender let us know that they are connected to The Boulevard so we could head over there to grab me a drink if we wanted. I ended up order champagne (bougie I know lol) and we grabbed a seat at the bar. The decor is pretty awesome, and they have an old school car on display which we loved. The whiskey selection is pretty good and we were pleasantly surprised. We got there fairly early on a Friday night and a DJ was setting up around 9 pm. The music was kinda out of place for the "vibe" or "theme" of the bar, so we opted to head out before the DJ came on. I'd like to see a live band here, I think that'd add a nice touch to the place. The business information describes them as "classy, upscale" but that is clearly not the case. TLDR: it doesn't matter what you do here (including battery). As long as you know the bartender, they'll vouch for you and you'll be square. I was at The Boulevard with a few friends and witnessed an incident involving a guy not getting his way and pulling a girl's hair. After I saw her push him off, I asked her if she knew him and she said, "no." I, then, asked my boyfriend to help me find security because that was unacceptable. While he went went looking for security, I saw the same guy walk up to the same girl and unzip her purse. She pushes him away so I walk up to the bartender. I watch my bf tell the bartender about what happens and the girl bartender (either Kerry or Sheridan, the one with straight hair) tells him that she can vouch for him (as he's standing in front of her shaking his head, denying that he did anything wrong). Apparently he's a regular and that must matter here. We both get escorted out by security (David) and he doesn't even care to hear what my bf has to say because he was "too hot." While I understand why David felt the need to react that way, he didn't take much time to hear what I had to say either (and I was sober). All in all, ladies, if you don't have a sober friend watching out for you, don't come here. You'll get assault and battery and no one will give a damn because regulars come before you. I walked in with some girlfriends on Saturday (weekend before Halloween) dressed in costumes. The place was packed but we found seats at the bar. The bartender recommended the Endless summer drink which consisted of cantaloupe and watermelon vodka in a martini glass. There were some other liquids in it too but I didn't pay much attention to that. They have wide screen TVs playing sports or sports highlights. The crowd was a mix but mostly the Newport Beach/ Costa Mesa crowd. Needless to say, I didn't pay for any of my drinks that evening as the nice gentleman who sat beside me, paid for them. My friend Jessica and I have been to the Boulevard countless times for 7 months now and we can't get enough. We started at Goat Hill Tavern (found it not to our taste) and found out that The Boulevard has the same owners so we decided to check it out. The Boulevard is a great place to go at any time of the day for any reason. (I've sat in a booth and worked on homework in the day and on the weekends I party until last call) When they open at 3pm they play some smoother tunes: 50s and relaxing, fun music. Plus they have an amazing happy hour Monday-Friday from 3-6pm. Buy One Get One on Cocktails and Wines. I can get a lot for $20 or less. On the weekends the crowd grows significantly. There is always an interesting crowd so if you enjoy people watching grab a seat in a nice padded booth and enjoy the show. The jukebox turns off after 10pm on weekends and they put on house music. If you're looking to try a new drink check out the cocktails list, or they have new drinks on the chalkboard behind the bar. If you like a sweet drink I highly recommend the Endless Summer (Cantaloupe and Watermelon vodka, fresh OJ, and sweet & sour). I have recommended it to many people and let them have a taste... and they all liked it. Also, men can ask for an Endless Summer in a man-friendly glass. They have an outdoor patio for smoking, where they recently remodeled the entrance. They are in the process of rebuilding their bathrooms and they should be done within the month. Also, rumor has it their will be live music once all the remodeling is done. My favorite part about The Boulevard is the experience. All of the bartenders are very friendly and enjoy their time at work. Andy and Rob truly exceed my expectations of a typical bar experience . The bouncers are always clearing any empty drinks and willing to help out if some creep is giving you a hard time. John, Joe, and Andrew have all gotten me out of a jam or lifted my spirits in some way. I've been to Detroit Bar, Pierce Street Annex, Sharkeez in HB and Newport Beach, The District, Goat Hill Tavern, Garfs, 2nd Street in Long Beach, DTF... and there is no other place I'd rather go than the Boulevard. read more

I was hesitant to try out a "Martini Bar" in Costa Mesa, afraid I would be overwhelmed by a bunch of flannel, no-lense glasses, handlebar mustache hipsters, but that wasn't QUITE the case. Having been to The Helm several times before (ICYDK, that is what The Boulevard was before it was renovated/changed), I was so pleased to see how it was cleaned up and redone. Every time I have gone here, it has been between 8-9PM that I've arrived on a Friday or Saturday night. I can always find a seat (if not in the front/main area, in the back area). They have at least 6-10 big screens playing sports, a jukebox, and an awesome "car museum". I really enjoy the ambiance, with candles on each table reflecting off the gold ceiling. The bar area is nice, clean, and organized so I can easily figure out what to order (there are also specialty drink menus on each table). I always try a martini: my absolute favorite is the Cucumber Lychee martini, but I've also tried Thicker Than Water. My boyfriend usually tries whatever specialty beer they have on tap for that week, or a Moscow Mule. Cocktails are $7.50, if I remember correctly. They taste fresh and light, and I'm GOOD after three of them! The bartenders are quick and friendly, even when it gets a little crowded. A few other notable things: They do have an outdoor lounge/patio split into two parts: the nice part and the crappy part. The nice part has lounge-type seating with cushions, the crappy part feels like you're in a side alley with junky plastic yard chairs. On a weekend night, the nice part fills up fast with large groups smoking. I've never had problems finding somewhere to sit, just try the back area, but be warned that after 10PM, they turn on club music and the speakers are right above your head back there. It's not too hisptery...it's manageable. It's actually a pretty diverse, young crowd. There is only ONE toilet for the girls...and it's a tinyyyyyy bathroom, with a weird window that goes to the side alley that freaks me out people can see or hear me tinkling. The boulevard is my favorite bar to enjoy whiskey at! The selection of spirits is truly remarkable, excellent choices of all price ranges. All the bartenders there are sweet and hard working. This review is oomg overdue, since I never hit "post"...‍ It's the beginning of my weekend, which generally just means I have the evening off, and I don't even have any interest in moving one step. Then I realize, I should probably leave work. My sexy Manchild suggests grabbing a bite before heading home, so I decide to fulfill my month long craving for Pan Asia Mongolian...ever since moving away from Costa Mesa (I know...blasphemy....), my body hasn't neglected to remind me that I have sacrificed the luxury of walking distance delicacies. Including Boulevard. So, we decide to make a pit stop. We're greeted by a familiar, sexy accent. Do my ears deceive me? There's no way it's our stud muffin Andy...he's supposed to be off. Well, what a delightful surprise...it's Glenn behind the bar with his seductive smile, busting his cat walk cascade our way. He is quick to offer our favorite libations, as well as recommend the beauties aging in the casks. I recently had a gathering here for my birthday and it was good times with great people! Everyone here is extremely cool, especially both Robs. I emailed back and forth with Rob #1 a few times and he made planning a bday celebration really easy. They let us have a decorated section just for our group, we worked out special drink prices and he even offered to cater food. The drinks here are awesome. If you ever feel like venturing away from red bull and vodka, their cocktails are a must. They use all freshly squeezed juices and make their own sweet and sour! The Endless Summer has a mixture of cantalope and watermelon vodka and tastes like juice but don't be fooled. These are some of the best cocktails I've had at a bar and less expensive than most bars/clubs at only $8 a drink. They also have a decent selection of draft beers, try the Palm Belgian Ale. If you get hungry after drinking there is a food truck that comes by right out front. I didn't get to check it out, but the bite of someone's grilled cheese I had was good. The venue is small but never felt overly crowded. I came by once earlier in the day and it's an older crowd with people chatting or watching football. But at night you get a nice mix of the younger newport crowd. Check it out if you're looking for a middle ground between the smelly Goat Hill next door and the crazy antics across the street at Sutra. read more
