I volunteered on Christmas lunch and was blown away by the passion and kindness of the staff and the clients we served. Everyone showed gratefulness and I was impressed with the staff and their drive to serve the needs of this population. God bless their work!

It would be great if we didn't need this place. Has anything changed since 1879!?

In a previous life I worked in homeless services. I walked by the Bowery Mission yesterday and started a conversation with one of the men waiting outside. I don't know if he had been inside. I thought he was waiting with the others to be called in. I wanted to know if it had been renovated after all these years. I described the conditions I had seen at one time. His response was "like being in jail". After he shook my hand to part I thought to myself "exactly". I had heard that tune over and over from the homeless. I think I also would rather take my chances on the streets. I'm giving them five stars for effort. I know how hard the employees work in a thankless job for low salaries. I also hope the tax payer funding has helped them institute improvements that were greatly needed. I would never want to discourage anyone from seeking help while getting out of the cold and off the street.

One of the best places to volunteer, meet new people, get a different feel on different people in our city. It's always great to take time to volunteer and give back and the Bowery is one of the best places to do so. You meet a lot of people with different stories and also get a feel on how to help and give back in different ways. I spent an afternoon here making lunch for the homeless and through out the process I learned a lot about our community and also met other people who were in to volunteer. I would love to do this again. It's an amazing opportunity.

Never knew this place existed, but just started charity work, so it was a great start. While driving, you may just pass this place up if the bus isn't right out front. I passed it twice the first time. There are a good deal of people that stand outside (at least there were the first two times I went), but they are usually very friendly. They determine how much you donate by the weight. Fill out a form, and be on your way. They accept pretty much everything, but just be considerate and bring clean, decent things. Street parking, but not in the front, so don't get yourself a ticket. The parking around there is sort of confusing, however, just read the signs. If you have a lot of things, just have someone stay in the car while you drop them off. It seriously takes only about 4 minutes. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your experience here! It's a bit far for me to volunteer at, but I can always do holidays or days off :)

Do you want to do something that will make you feel good? Why not get together with some friends or…read morebusiness partners and go volunteer in your community? Today, one of the professional organizations I belong to sponsored a Community Service Day at CUMAC in Paterson, NJ. Their website describes CUMAC as a "non-profit organization dedicated to feeding people and changing lives. Our team works to alleviate hunger and its root causes for those in need in Paterson, Passaic County and northern New Jersey." Our team worked on breaking down the fruits and vegetables donated by local supermarkets into individual family-sized bags. What a wonderful feeling it is to help people and make a difference in someone's life. I know we did today. CUMAC also has a thrift store on site, but lots of the clothing are given away to families under stress. Business suits are also available for client's job interviews. It is a very humbling experience to spend a few hours in service to others. Now it's your turn......

In the two hour time span I was at the event you're really working all the way through so I can only imagine what the people that work here on a daily basis go through to make sure that every client has what they need. Simply put, this was a great event. I give this place 5 stars all around for what they stand for and represent. Helping the community is #majorKEY. So, if you're ever in the area stop by, donate, and perhaps check out their thrift shop that they have. Since this is a non- profit organization sometimes supplies and money can be tight. So a lot of the thrift shop money is used to buy other goods, etc. So definitely get out and help if you're able.

I volunteered for the following shifts in the past 30 days. - Senior Breakfast in West Harlem (3-hour shift) - Dinner Service in West Harlem (3-hour shift) The train station is located a few feet from the C or B train stop at 116th Street. The facility is located on the Southeast corner next to Texas Chicken, and it has orange awnings. Use the left door and inform the security guard that you are there to volunteer. There is a volunteer room in which you can store your coats and bags in a locked cage. There will be a volunteer leader to get you ready for service. The leader will provide hair nets, name tags, and plastic aprons. All volunteers will either work in the front or the back of the house. It will depend on the needs of the center. The work may include: taking dirty trays to the back, placing food on trays, pouring juices, handing out trays, preparing food for cooking, cleaning, etc. The facility will have full-time staff to guide all of the volunteers during service. The facility will have an opened seating with three lines of tables for people to sit. The clients would typically sign in at the door, then walked towards the serving line to obtain their meals, and then they would sit at the tables. In the end, it was a wonderful experience to help serve meals to the less fortunate in the community.
