I attended a holiday open house and was blown away by the amount of artists that were showing and selling their amazing craft. This city is on fire with talent! The main entrance on the south side of the building opens into a large space with industrial wooden beams and natural lighting from the windows that are 20' up and encircling the space. Several exhibits were on display while a lecture was under way with dozens of artist discussing and peddling their creations. A perfect blend of commerce and art.

Located near the 18th & Vine Jazz District, the center is the result of a stunning $26 million transformation of the former Crispus Attucks School. Before the program began, Izzy Vivas, Director of Sales at the Zhou B Art Center, welcomed us and shared an overview of the center's mission and rebirth. Like many other attendees, I walked in not knowing anything about the space. By the time Izzy finished, it was clear that this isn't just a renovation--it's a full-scale cultural revitalization. The building houses several dozen artist studios spread across two floors, and a number of them opened their doors after the event so guests could explore the work. It was a great mix--painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media--and the artists were friendly, passionate, and eager to share their stories. The atmosphere felt both professional and welcoming. I hope more Kansas Citians take the time to experience the Zhou B Art Center, especially during First Fridays. It's an impressive space with a lot of creative energy, and it deserves to become a regular stop for anyone who cares about local art.

We bought our tickets online, since you can only get it only online not the box office for the evening show. Regular is $45.00, Senior is $40.50, Military is $40.50 and Youth/Student is $29.99. Fees not included but I would say add $5 for taxes and fees. The experience is inside of Starlight Theater. It's not as big as I thought it would be. But the first room, it's layout like a museum, you can read who Van Gogh was and his art history. I like the Van Gogh room which consists chairs and bed, it look just like his painting. You can also sit on the bed or chair to get your photo opp. Next room is where you can experience Van Gogh Alive. It displays his quotes and his arts and the music makes it worthwhile. I tis a 42 minute video. I would suggest sitting on the floor where the projection is, you can be with the art. Lots of people were standing or sitting, but we sat on the floor on the projection and it was fun. Last, is the Sunflower Selfie Room. It was definitely smaller but the mirror effect made it look like infinity. Definitely worth the visit especially with a good company.

It also sells selected works and hosts interactive events like painting classes. The music venue schedules mostly electronic and dance-based performers. First Fridays is this organic event that is ever evolving into something better. Art installations,…read moremusic, hands on community involvement, food and drinks. Fire dancers, graffiti artists, pop up bands, drinks on the patio, it can be whatever experience appeals to you the most. The art galleries are always there even in the winter with their doors open. Block after block with something new. Vendors, sometimes free samples or live bands or watching an artist create something. Of course their is always the people watching which is a sport unto it self. It definitely started with the focus being on the art but it's grown into so much more. Feels more all inclusive but I do believe this is in large part to a creativity that really resonates and keeps people coming back but also participating. Perfectly acceptable to go solo, date, group, family friends, kids, all are accounted for. You don't have to start the night out with a meal, but that's usually the route I go and than walk it off. Coffee, beer, wine, popsicles, ice cream, chocolate shops it's all available. Parking! Yikes! That can be rough but persistence will pay off and if you don't mind walking a spot will eventually materialize. Their are some parking garages available and with the street car available that might help, just allow for the extra time.
