OK so the Victoria is so much of a 'old man' pub that it quite frankly re defines the 'old man' pub category and blows the other contenders to crown out the water. -Cheap drink......check -Old men...check -Smaller lounge (for the old man clique).....check -Sticky carpets, tables, barmaids....check -Barmaid with scandalously low cut top...check...ing her out. So aye.....not the classiest joint in the world, but ideal for a drinkathon with the male chaps, that won't end up breaking the bank!

It seemed appropriate to pop into this place on a Friday night given this is "Loopy Lori's" karaoke…read morenight, as advertised outside in a colourful and vibrant way that is completely out of keeping with the rest of the fairly dour exterior. As it turns out, Lori, herself, isn't overwhelmingly loopy, certainly notcompared to much of the clientele. Victoria's is a Partick bar alright, in good and bad senses. Traditional if a tad rough, I can't say it's a place I will be back to but equally, it has a certain good time vibe when Lori does her stuff and I suppose you could do worse in this area. With a tendency to attract a raucous crowd at weekends, Victoria's is a different place through the week, pigeonholed very much in the old man section, in terms of atmosphere and, sometimes, smell.

It reopened under the new, rather rubbish name of 'Skoosh' and has all of a sudden became the place to be in Motherwell, shunning the Megabar up the road. This place looks a lot like someone's living room at a house party, with stripy wallpaper and chrome wall art, with a teeny dance floor which is always dangerously packed out. The drinks are averagely priced, with no promotional deals that I have heard of, which kind of takes the shine off of it, although that may change for special occasions or events. Even though it is small, it has plenty of seating and you always manage to get a table if you're there early enough. The clientele are older; it is an over 21's club afterall, which makes it all the better in my book. I'd rather party with a 35 year old than a sleazy young 17 year old! You never see underagers in here, which is refreshing. The bar is well staffed and there are always loads of security, which is really reassuring. I actually quite like the place despite myself, and it's somewhere where I would consider going more often, if I'm too skint for town!

I had a mixed experience really. When I went in everyone looked pretty unfriendly and the bar staff didn't seem eager to serve. But once I had been there for a while they seemed to perk up a bit. I still felt a bit uncomfortable however. The beer I had was a bit of a let down unfortunately. However the pub food they serve was surprisingly a touch above the rest. My only complaint was that it took a while to arrive. But once it did it I was a little more impressed by it than the usual pub affair. Supposedly the pub is under new management after a spate of awful owners who really let the place go to ruin. Maybe it' still recovering from those dark days. I would certainly like to revisit and have a more consistent experience.

That's where we were absolutely sold: they presented us with the BEST mac & cheese I think I've just about ever had. It came with a salad (also delicious) and garlic bread, and we had chips as well. For pub food, this place seriously takes the cake. Couple that with good service and clean, standard facilities (and a cozy gas fireplace) and you've got a lovely pub on your hands. :) wish it wasn't so far away... The soft drinks are cheap- often a sign of a good bar that isn't out to scalp anyone who isn't steaming- and the trade is mostly regulars- strangely fora city centre bar. The style is old fashioned- this pub would not be out of place in suburban Glasgow, but it has become a little bit of a meet up point for more mature clubbers early on weekends. Certainly safe and welcoming, it is old fashioned and respectable.

To The Arlington! Not having been in since they gave the place a right good scrub down, I've been desperate to head back to see what the beef was. So? Holy lick-o-paint Batman! It's still the Arly, but cleaner, funkier and with toilets that don't smell like old dude. They've also opened the place up a bit by taking away the wee awkward booth section, which has just opened it all up. I'm a fan. This place is entirely un-pretentious, it's easy, cosy, cheap and it's just that little bit nicer to be in since the last time I visited. Woodlands for a drink? You might as well pop in.

It is only regulars who frequent these premises. I happended to stumble in accidently on one occasion and quickly about turned and left. Prices are cheap but this is a real spit and sawdust place. It is in the quieter end of town outwith the town centre itself and I don't think the curtains have been changed in 20 years. But Glasgow Yelpers haven't steered me wrong yet, so when we needed a pre-drink spot for dinner at Banana Leaf, this is where we headed for my first-ever visit. Inside, this place is really good! It's got a casual vibe, probably most comparable to somewhere like Mono and has some really good beers on offer. I was driving so stuck to the soft drink - the Coke I had tasted really weird so either their post mix was dying, or it was Pepsi. Either way, it was undrinkable. But that didn't sour our visit - it was a nice place to hang out for an hour, they were playing pretty good music and there was a good vibe. I couldn't quite pick the mix of people there, it was mostly students maybe from the Conservatoire or Art School. I wasn't just going to go up and ask them so that's just my assumption! I would definitely go back here as the food menu looked pretty good. They also had the HOTTEST ladies loos I've been in ever, so if you're in need of warming up, I'd suggest going here.

Anyway, the former McIntoshes has been replaced by a nice and shiny new place that's done away with the scary cave look and went for the 'big windies' approach. In addition, the place has been kitted out quite nicely with lots of exposed, distressed wood, black and white photies and other trendy type touches. Don't get me wrong, aye it's trendy but for me it feels more natural than some of the forced offerings at other joints. Drinks wise it's fairly standard. Nice to see a West beer on tap, in addition to the usual suspects, plus a nice wee selection of whiskys. I think I also swatched some menus kicking around, so it appears that food is on the offer. but yeah, I never had the opportunity to sample (update ahoy!). I thought a nice came when I was paying for a round of drinks and the extra server on shift took the drinks over to the table whilst I paid up with the barmaid. (nice) I like it. They said it's the best pub that Govan has. So going on they're recommendation we headed down. Well it did have the old men in there sitting as if it's their usual tables learing over fresh new blood to the bar but there was a wee bit screened off up at the back. So when ordering your drinks you ask for the key and then just open up and head on in. It was nice to have that wee bit of privacy. I have to agree though the toilet is ickle but it is kept clean. Upstairs is the private lounge which is a fair size. I've never been up there for drinks but only the once with my company when we did an interview with the landlady about Govan. She's absolutely lovely and very much part of the community. Although the decor isn't 21st century minimalistic and it is a bit of an old man's bar, which sometimes I quite like, shhh!!!! Not for the old men of course but for the atmosphere. The staff are pleasant and the prices are reasonable so I if you're passing by one day I'd drop in for a wee half. Ooh totally forgot they've got Karaoke Tuesdays. I've yet to go but I'm sure I'll be there soon enough.

The decor was completely nondescript, but with a big, well-stocked bar. The drinks were moderately priced. The only other big group of drinkers in were a bunch of old English neds. Or chavs, as they're more well known back home. We were the youngest in here by at least 10 years, but the atmosphere was still good and we didn't feel out of place at all, as is sometimes the case in Subcrwal -route bars.
