A friend of mine shared the page for this place on Facebook when it first opened and I have been intending to go ever since. Being in the habit of going to a combo of Booths/M&S/Aldi every Saturday morning, it has taken me a time to actually put words in to action, but I have done it.
For my meat, I usually either get the pre-packed stuff at M&S or the meat counter at the Media City Booths. But what I have missed since moving away from the Peak District, is a proper butcher's shop. The kind that not only sells good meat but has other accompaniments for the meal you will cook with your meat.
So last Saturday, I decided to break my habit and I am really glad I did. I got some chicken drumsticks, braising steak, tomato and herb rub and a Fitzgeralds mocktail and it all came to around £7 ish which is really good value.
If you've never had a Fitzgerald's mocktail, you should as they are really good. I first tried them when I won a "For The Love Of Food" box (thanks Yelp!) but haven't been able to find them since. Until the BQ that is.
The meat itself (which I guess is the most important aspect of a butchers) was brilliant. The chicken was really tasty and for the first time in ages, I ate chicken that didn't give me heartburn. I used the braising steak to cook down slowly in a tomato-y sauce, having previously rubbed and marinated the meat with the rub, and it was really good and not chewy.
I will definitely be back and next time I will purchase the wine as they looked to have a really good selection. Some people reading this who know me may be surprised that I didn't buy some this time, but I had a friend staying over and she doesn't drink red.
The service was friendly and after only a few minutes was chatting away to the couple (I assume the couple who own/run it) about the weather, evil supermarkets and other chit chat. Really friendly and gave good advice.
Overall, definitely think this is a must visit, particularly for NQ residents who have been needing a decent independent butchers for ages. read more
