It's like a mini IKEA with never ending aisles that look exactly the same. To make it worse, whatever time you go there's always queues. The one thing it has going for it however, is the staff are friendly and helpful and it's easy to return products if you change your mind.

Well done, folks. At first, I enjoyed browsing - possibly because I started in the garden centre. A vast array of flowers, tall plants, bamboo and bonsai were ready to take home. Prices started at a very affordable 98p for the tiny pots, with slightly larger flowers on offer at 2 for £15. Also available were seeds, soil, pots and any tools necessary to start and maintain a garden. The rest of the shop, though, was quite dull in comparison. I found myself dragging my feet through sections like lighting, paint, shelving, bathroom and kitchen fixtures, rugs, laminate flooring and tile. A woman asked her child, "Are you getting bored?" as I walked by, so perhaps I'm simply not mature enough to appreciate the wonder of home renovations. My theory, though, is that every aisle brings to mind the hours of work that would accompany each purchase. I really can't be bothered.

Basically, they sell things for the kitchen, like crockery, cutlery, draining racks, chopping boards, gadgets, and so on. Although the range is not that large - only a few styles of cutlery, for example - they do have lots of useful things, and the store is lovely just to browse around. The place was buzzing with happy shoppers, doing just that. (In marked contrast to the January Sales hell that characterised the rest of Brighton). I have spent hours trying to find an small olive spoon, for example - and they had one, and an olive spear, and a spring-loaded pickle fork, and... We also bought a really large, heavy beech wood chopping board - from a sustainable source - for under £8. Something else that caught my eye were several designs of nice wire draining racks, in bright funky colours - no horrid plastic tat. Oh, and lovely, friendly, helpful staff. I hope they succeed.

If its all a bit overwhelming then do what I do and get one of the helpful staff to frogmarch you to the aisle and shelf you've been looking for. I've been in here countless times recently to fix a door, find a new tap and choose some tiles with friends. Is it sad to say admit that coming to Jewson has been the highlight of my weekend?

Very encouraging indeed to see local places doing this well. They also cut wood to size and sell a huge amount of high end and basic tools to get your home looking at its best. While the big chain places might be a few pence cheaper, I think its a lot better to buy your DIY goods from somewhere like this as the staff are always so much more helpful and honest to what your needs are.

They don't have the largest showroom in the world (It's set over two adjoining buildings) - but they manage to cram in such a wide range of stock. The bathrooms they stock are contemporary and they have some really unusual ones that you don't see anywhere else. Whilst they do stock everyday items - they also stock some top of the range ones. They offer far more of a variety than you would expect from a shop of this size and, to be honest, in this location. I didn't buy my whole bathroom suite from here - but did buy some taps and a sink. They had a great sale on at the time and the taps were reduced from £400 to £200. Can't comment on their fitting service as I arranged for this to be done by a friend.

It's attractively laid out and lovely to browse, and excellent for things such as olive spoons, tea-bag squeezers, lemon rind peelers, which in my book are not essentials, but make those specific tasks so much easier. Being lucky enough to have both a spacious front and back garden, I am always on the look out for gorgeous new plants. I usually buy my lavendar and herbs from Flower City round the corner and go to Wyevale Garden Centre for everything else. It's expensive but the stock is always varied and extremely good quality. They have plant pots, soil, gardening furniture and seeds inside and a massive selection of seasonal and perennial flowers, plants and fruit trees inside. I've bought everything from rosemary, thyme and chilli plants to dahlias and rose bushes and everything has grown beautifully. In fact, if I could afford it I'd go back tomorrow and order fig and olive trees for next spring.
