Not bad at all! I only tasted a little bit of the pit beef. Not the best I've tasted, but still pretty good - juicy and flavorful and they don't skimp out on the meat. I ordered the old bay wings... in baltimore, it's just called baltimore wings... but until this day, I wasn't able to find old bay wings that compared with a pub that we used to go to in baltimore city. Not bad at all! I come from KC and Texas BBQ (no thanks, Memphis and NC), and while pit beef isn't technically BBQ, this is definitely a good place. I had the beef ends, which were similar to the Kansas City BBQ delicacy called burnt ends. They weren't quite charred like burnt ends, but tender and flavorful. I only tasted the "hot" sauce, since I'm all for spicy BBQ, and it was dark, tasty, and not too sweet. Note that it's carryout-only, as there's no seating area. read more

Just moved here. Ordered a little bit of (almost) everything. Enough for 4 people. First of all. This is not a sit-down, eat-in place. Total take-out. I do like the fact that they offer free delivery and I might take that into consideration, if I order from here again. But here are a few criticisims: First of all, only friendly face was the cashier. They guys behind the counter putting my order together didn't seem friendly. Felt like I was ordering from the soup nazi from Seinfeld.1/2 pound of medium cooked beef brisket. But by the time we got it home in it's styrofoam box (not the best packaging), it was dry and had little flavor. Full slab of ribs could've used some more sauce. In fact, it would've been nice if anyone of the staff asked if I wanted extra sauce on the side. Beans had little flavor. Mac and cheese is good, but it's DEF not homemade. Mashed potatoes are good and those are DEF not homemade as well. Accolades: I got a 1/2 chicken which was nicely cooked, tender and ladled with barbecue sauce. Service was fast. Food is ready to go as soon as you walk in. Enough staff on hand to handle a large order. Parking is ample. read more

The Canopy is good, not great. Small hole in the wall next to the newly renovated McDonald's on Route 40. The place is mainly carry out only with a standing only counter to eat at if you choose to dine in. They now accept credit cards. I've eaten here a dozen or so times over the last decade and it does the trick to satisfy my BBQ hankering. I always get the pit beef which you can order at any temperature. The sandwich is decent, but it is missing that "wow" factor that you find at better BBQ places. The BBQ sauce is tasty and reminds me of Arby sauce. The fries are boardwalk style and they give you a huge portion. If you are local, they generally have coupons in the mail for $.50 to a $1 off a sandwich. All in all, I recommend giving it a shot, but for any BBQ snobs, you might be disappointed. read more

My brother told me about this place a few days ago and we made a point to stop this past Friday. We were starving and wanted to see how this place compared to some of the others around the area. Both him and I ordered straight up pit beef sandwiches with BBQ and a large order of gravy fries. I personally enjoyed the BBQ sauce a lot more than I did Kirkwood's. The sauce was fairly average, but it was not too tangy like some others I have had. The size portion was good and everything else was great. My only gripe about the place was that there were no places to sit and parking wasn't the greatest. I bought chicken wings, a full rack of ribs, pit turkey sandwich, and a roast pork sandwich in order to give my fellow yelpers a decent review. I like this place, I don't love it. The servings are ample and what stands out is THE MEAT IS SOOOO TENDER. What the meat lacks is pizazz....where's that pit smoke taste? I hope you don't expect me to add some sauce or burgerking smoke juice to make it bbq flavored? Wings are a waste of time. Ribs too bland but moist. Verdict: Stick with the sandwiches where you can add horseradish, tiger sauce, or bbq sauce to make it right on point. I would say 3.5 stars would describe it....if I didn't have better choices in the Baltimore area, I would come here again but because I like other places way better, I'd only go back to Canopy if I was really hungry and in a hurry. read more

Large pit beef, rare, onions, horse radish, hot bbq, and hot bbq on the side to dip it in. You can order that up for me anytime. Pretty consistent and always tasty unless someone (ahem) forgets to order my hot bbq on the side. Occasionally they wrap the sandwich too tight and my large becomes a medium. But short of calling me names when I go in there, I'll keep going back....but it does keep them from 5 stars (the wrapping of the sandwich that is...they don't actually call me names). read more

I am new to the area, and was hankering for some simple barbeque. I had heard good things about The Canopy, which is not far from where I now live. As someone who moved here from Cleveland, OH, there is *nothing* there like this, to my knowledge. So on a Sunday drive in the area, we decided to try The Canopy rather than the abundant chain restaurants. At first The Canopy may look underwhelming, but you walk in and the somewhat intoxicating smoke wafting in the air will fog your brain as soon as you look at the menu. To the already hungry, it is tortuous. It is strictly carryout - no seats to be had. But that suited our needs just fine. I don't know what pit beef is, I've never had it, so I went for a Ribs and Chicken platter ($9.95). My boyfriend went for a half rack of ribs platter ($11.95). We both got the mild bbq sauce. We could hardly wait to get home. For the price, the portions are quite generous, and the quality is good. The ribs and chicken had a beautiful char on them. The sauce complemented the smoky char of the ribs and the roasted half chicken well. A little sweet or vinegary of a sauce, but not too much so. The meat fell right off the bone of the ribs, but our only complaint about the ribs was that the bones were large - leaving less meat to be had. The chicken was roasted perfectly - not too dried out. The sides we had - mac and cheese and mashed potatoes - were pretty good. Both seemed to be home made to some degree. I'll have to try a pit beef some other day, as well as the baked beans. This ain't Boston Market. This appears to be real bbq. It may not be perfect and pretty and wrapped nicely in marketing, but it's damn good. Don't expect wet naps either! read more

We love this place. I always get large pit beef mid-rare and an order of fries. Sometimes the wings. The wings are decent I come for the pit beef. The Canopy started delivering a a year or two ago and are an amazing option for delivery food. Granted the food can not be as hot or the fries can be mushy. I wouldn't really recommend anything but the sandwiches. But, they are awesome and we have been repeat customers for years. I know the delivery guy at this point. read more

I have been a long time customer of the canopy. The Pitt beef with tiger sauce and onions is my all time favorite. no where else have a seen birch root beer in a soda fountain. The meat here is not good. My ribs were a grey color, yes I know they are smoked but should not be that color and they had no smoke taste! The chicken breast was dry and the sauce was real running like it was watered down. The worse part about it was they added a tip to the bill without my knowledge. This is the best pit beef in Maryland and therefore, the entire world. Some people tell you to go to Chaps in east Baltimore, but it doesn't compare to The Canopy. Although the turkey, beef BBQ, and ham are good, you have to get the beef. These people know what they're doing. BTW, if you're from some place where you never heard of pit beef, don't ask for lettuce, tomato, and mayo. And don't order anything but rare or medium-rare. Although the onions are optional, what you want on your pit beef is horse radish and BBQ sauce. I wish they sold their BBQ sauce in bottles. Like the beef, it's also the worlds best. The fries are very similar to "Ocean City Fries", or "Thrashers". I've been a customer since before they even had an address. In the early eighties, they were an outdoor place with nothing but a cinder block pit and a few picnic tables under a big canopy (hence the name) in a vacant lot on route 40 near the Double-T diner in Catonsville. The liquor store next door sold a pant load of beer to the original Canopy customers. In about 1984 or so, they were suddenly shut down. I've never been able to verify it, but at the time I heard it was because a nearby McDonald's and other fast food joints complained that they had to compete with a place with no building, no insurance, etc. Whether that was true or not, and to whom they complained I don't know, but they were gone. I think it was just a matter of months before they resurfaced, this time in the building where they still are today. Before The Canopy moved in the building was occupied by the area's most radical video arcade, called Galleon Of Games. Soon after they arrived they had to close again, as I recall, because of a fire. Since then, it's been smooth sailing and consistently the best pit beef and BBQ anywhere. read more

Is pit beef barbeque? I guess it would technically be considered barbeque since it is cooked over an open flame... Actually, what exactly is the definition of barbeque? Whatever... I love good pit beef. Tender, smoky, flavorful... As good as good pit beef is however, bad pit beef is plain nasty... Hard, bland, dry... *puke* The Canopy has a lot of good things going for it. Their menu is pretty extensive and includes pit beef, pit ham, chicken, ribs, macaroni and cheese, cole slaw, and french fries. If this place just served pit beef I think I would have given it 4 stars, but since they serve other things, I have to grade them accordingly. The pit beef is pretty good. I order mine as rare as they'll serve them and it usually comes out very red and moist. Their horseradish could be a little better. It tastes fresh but I don't think it's very hot. I like their barbeque sauce: the right amounts of sweetness and tartness. I only wish that the large sandwich were a little cheaper. the side items are ok. Nothing too extraordinary. The ribs look weak. I don't even know whey they serve them as I never see anyone order them. It seems like the same rack of ribs is sitting in the front food warmer every time I walk in... The fries are pretty good although sometimes they are too greasy. It depends on who is manning the fry station and how well they shake off the excess oil off of the fries. The other side items are average at best. On the plus side, they accept credit cards: a rarity for pit beef places (maybe thats because most pit beef places are located on the side of the road in a food cart...). But I think they add on a finance charge for credit card orders. Try to pay with cash whenever possible (And that totally negates the usefulness of being able to pay by credit in teh first place). read more

We were overly impressed with the food and people! The Canopy catered my daughter's wedding. The food was outstanding, as was the service and clientele. Everything arrived on time, was set up perfectly and we couldn't have asked for more. The food was delicious!! I saw everyone going back for 2nds and 3rds. What I noticed most...every plate on the tables was left empty, because it was so good. That's a rare sight at a wedding with so many people in attendance. Been a fan of The Canopy for many years, but my last two visits have been sub-par. REALLY dislike the current rolls...they don't have a good mouth feel and are really dry and even crumbly...I noted that when I cut my sandwich in two after arriving home that the bun literally fell apart into crumbs. The fries were starchy, not sweet like usual, as if they hadn't been soaked long enough. I go out of my way to come there, occasionally even driving from Mt. Airy specifically for a visit, but unless the bread quality changes, that may no longer be the case. read more

Well orginally from the South, so this was a different barbecue experience for me. As my Dad put it best, "did this come out of can." The sandwich was large....I'll give it that, but the barbecue was very stringy and too saucy. The boardwalk fries were pretty tasty, but you can't make a meal off fries. I read the wing review...maybe that will be their saving grace. Not worth the visit! read more
