I've taken some good writing courses and creative crafting courses there. They chop and change their course names and subjects regularly so checking their website or by going down to the centre and then asking for information at the reception desk in the main entrance. To go to the centre alone is free; but you pay for your class, either by paying for several weeks in advance or by paying just for that class and then just for every class that you turn up for. However, I got the feeling that they do prefer you to pay a full advance payment for the several weeks or so that you take the class for. The courses are entertaining and interesting and the prices are reasonable enough because of what you discover and learn from them is very satisfying and ultimately worthwhile. I do very much recommend this place, which is situated on Hammond Way road within the Penylan area. It is near to Albany and Wellfield road and Colchester Avenue.

It strikes me as being a nurturing and warming thing to do whilst the weather outside does its worst! I have stumbled across a number of places in the region that offer courses in aromatherapy, but none that provide tuition so inexpensively as Barry Community Learning Centre. The carlton Institute charges several hundred pounds for a really short course, but here they charge a fraction of this. They also run some other great courses that I may well consider doing, like Tai Chi for instance! (I think I'll give the belly dancing a miss). All the classes are in the evenings and so it's ideal for people who work 9 to 5! I'll see you there!

This is the largest of three parts of this 16-18 college in Cardiff. It is a small campus that…read morecould easily be mistaken for a small secondary school, but people of all ages are able to study. This is where science, maths and practical subjects are taught. Photography, art, mechanics, sports, physics, biology, chemistry, computer science... the list is pretty much, if not literally, endless. I took an Art A-Level here. The space available was good, as was the range of materials for us to use. The teaching methods were quite standard though; I'm unsure if I would have felt inspired by the teachers if I didn't have my own drive to begin with. For obvious reasons I'm unable to comment on other subjects and department. So I won't! But the canteen and public spaces are well maintained and stocked with good food and drink. This is essential, seeing as the campus is so far away from everything else. It takes about 40 minutes to get a bus from the city centre, but they are regular and discounts are available.

I went here for an open day and was pretty impressed..., but I did find that what I had in mind for accomadation standards where possibly a form of standard, that for me did not quiet reach my satisfactional level of requirement. That and I was already convinced and fixed with the exact type of University that I wanted to go to... But I was almost convinced to change my mind partly because the Media and Film departments in particualar looked really impressive and they nearly changed my mind as to what type of degree I wanted to do, especially since I had already done a National Diploma course at Coleg Glan Hafren in Cardiff. Newport is about twenty minutes to half an hour from Cardiff and by the use of public transport there are some buses to get back and forth from Cardiff to Newport, if you should need too... but the trains are alright to go on as well and you may find that you need both forms of transport. We met either the Vice Chancelor or the Headmaster of the University and he was really welcoming and was full of information about the Media and Film course and they did show a variety of different short films that some of the students the year before that open day had created. The short films weren't bad. The quality of them I thought was the best. If your thinking of studying a Media and Film degree in Wales then I certainly recommend this University as they are much more flexiable towards who they let into their University and the actual building of some of the buildings on this Campus in Caerleon looks fabulous, like an eighteenth century house or something... And the staff seem very supportive, friendly and helpful... Mind you if I had gone to study here I would have stayed living at home, but then I wouldn't have learn't how to live independantly... which I have found to become very useful.

The thing about selecting a university to attend is that most undergraduates-to-be want to escape…read morethe humdrum of their upbringing to climes unknown to them. Newport, on the face of it, isn't the tiniest backwater (although nobody's saying it's a sprawling cosmopolitan metropolis). But anybody not from the area should beware, because University Of Wales, Newport is split into two campuses: Allt-yr-yn and Caerleon. The former is less problematic, a suburbs base due to be replaced by the new City Campus in January 2011. The latter is entirely outside Newport, however, a good 10-15 minutes away by road, hardly ideal for convenient trips to the city and an even lengthier scoot over to Cardiff's more stimulating surrounds. Business, media and arts-led courses are probably the chief reason to attend the university. And on a positive note, with less nearby nightlife to readily splurge your loan and fairly dirt cheap rental housing in Caerleon, at least skint students can make their cash stretch a little further (if they don't spend it all on travelling to Newport/Cardiff anyway).

The reason I've given this campus 4 stars, rather than the 3 stars I gave to the others, is the high standard of teaching. Especially in the English and Media departments, I found some of the best teachers that I've ever had. I took 4 A-Levels (one of which I did both AS and A2 years at the same time) and I don't think I would ever have been able to do it without the encouragement I found here. Situated within easy walking distance from the city centre and Queens Street Railway Station, this is a great choice for anyone not quite sure what to do after finishing GCSEs. Go. I did an IT evening class at the Parade city centre site a while back, and a couple of people I know studied A Levels there - and as is the case at most colleges, the learning experience varied depending on the subjects they chose to study and the teachers they ended up with. The college offers about 800 different courses - some full time (e.g. A Levels) and others part time (such as evening IT training programmes). It has some 10,000 students enroled at any one time, ranging in age from 16 right up to about 80. Some courses are academic, such as many of the A Levels they offer, whereas others are vocational, whether it's teaching a trade such as auto engineering, or other skills such as childcare, creative design, business studies and sports. For those finishing their GCSEs, Coleg Glan Hafran actually offers a wider range of A Levels than any other institution in Cardiff (more than 30 different subjects, in fact) - so if you're looking for something less mainstream they may just offer it.

University Of Wales Institute Cardiff, or UWIC for short, has badged itself "Cardiff's Metropolitan…read moreuniversity" and seems to specialises mainly in more vocational, career-focused courses rather than hardcore academic studies you'll find at Cardiff University. A lot of their courses have been designed and developed alongside industry and business. UWIC's history actually dates back to the 1800s, when in 1865 the School of Art first opened in the Old Free Library Building in St Mary Street in the city centre. There's no UWIC site at this premises now, but the art school at its current site in Howard Gardens is still the place to study art in Cardiff. The university is made up of five Academic Schools: the well-known Cardiff School of Art & Design; the Cardiff School of Education, which is one of the leading providers of teacher training in the UK; the Cardiff School of Health Sciences, which recently opened a £4.9 million research centre; the Cardiff School of Management, which offers the largest on-campus MBA in the UK; and the renowned Cardiff School of Sport. It's spread across four campuses - Howard Gardens (Arts) is quite central, while Cyncoed (Education & Sport), Llandaff (Health Sciences and Management) and Plas Gwyn Residential Campus are all a bit of a hike from the city centre.

More commonly known as UWIC, this was my university. I studied English and Popular Culture here for…read more3 years and had an awesome time doing it. My course was based on Cyncoed campus which is mainly a sports campus with the NIAC at the back. All of the Campuses are modern and clean, and filled with helpful people to point you in the right direction when you inevitably get lost during the first week. The School of Art, Howard Gardens, is right next to the city centre, with Colchester Avenue is a little further down the road. Llandaff and Cyncoed are the biggest of the campuses and are a lot further away, but there are regular buses from town, and a dedicated bus service called the UWIC rider that goes to them all and Plas Gwyn halls of residence. The accommodation on the UWIC campuses aren't the best I've ever seen, but they are by no means the worst, either, and you are provided with everything you need. However, it's worth checking out the Liberty Living halls of residence in Cardiff which, while slightly more expensive and some are a pain to get to uni from, are much nicer and most have rooms reserved for UWIC students. The two big disappointments about UWIC, for me, were the library facilities, which leave a lot to be desired (although they are gradually being updated) and the Students Union. The UWIC SU hardly compares to that of other universities. Because sport is such a big thing at UWIC, it is the main interest of the SU and there are hardly any other clubs or societies. However, the SU bars (Centro and Tommy's at Cyncoed and Howard Gardens respectively) aren't at all bad, and the convenience stores and copy shops provide a good and valuable service to its students. Some things do seem like a work in progress, but overall this is a great university with a lot of fantastic lecturers and courses, and shouldn't be overlooked if you're thinking of studying in Cardiff.
