I saw this place on Instagram it looked interesting. When my friends and I got here, we ALWAYS pass by this place heading down Santa Cruz, we just thought it was an abandoned restaurant. They're only opened Fridays and Weekends so it makes sense why I rarely see cars there. The ambiance was cool, it was kind of dark, but it had a homey vibe to it. We decided to order a la carte (Texas-style brisket, the cats fusion combo, slider trio, regular fries) and we were able to try both their potato and coleslaw sides. Everything tasted great, we were all hungry and everyone's favorite dish was the Texas-Style Brisket. It was a bit pricey for what the portion was, but it was worth it. All of us had a good experience and much appreciated the service, so I have to give this place a 5/5. They also haven't made us feel rushed when they were about to close, which was very courteous of them. Despite their ratings on Yelp, I think you should give this place a shot. It can be loud, but there's seating in the back that save you from hearing loss. The 'buffet' was like 4 trays of food that wasn't even hot. The menu said there were way more options than there actually were--like there wasn't pancit even though the menu listed it. For $35 too, a total let down. On top of that, I found not one, not two, but THREE bugs in my drink. I told staff and they apologized and asked if I wanted them to remake it, and I said no I'd prefer it was just taken off the check. He acted confused, left, then came back and said they were investigating the source of the bugs and asked again if I wanted them to remake it, I said no again. I truthfully lost my entire appetite after that. They did not comp the drink. I paid $15 for a drink I only had one sip of before realizing it was full of bugs. We'd heard about the "all you can eat" buffet here and figured we'd finally give this place a second chance. We should've skipped it. When I go to a BBQ place, I expect BBQ. What we got instead was dry meat drowning in some overly sweet, Asian-inspired sauce that had no business being anywhere near a barbecue plate. If I wanted that, I would've gone somewhere that actually specializes in it. The food sitting out on that buffet line looked like it had been there since the restaurant opened. Everything was dry, overcooked, and clearly reheated more times than anyone wants to admit. Whatever seasoning was used in the kitchen never made it out to the serving trays. Honestly, the whole buffet setup feels like an easy out. It's a way to avoid actually taking orders and making food fresh, per order, the way a real BBQ place should. Instead of getting a plate made to order, we got whatever had been sitting out the longest. And for what we paid, this should not have been the quality on the table. All you can eat should mean more than just more of the same disappointing food. Quantity doesn't make up for a complete lack of quality. To make matters worse, the item I actually wanted never got restocked the entire time we were there. I kept checking back, hoping, but it just sat empty. For a buffet you're paying good money to eat at, that's not acceptable. Half of what was out there looked like it had been sitting under the heat lamp so long it lost whatever flavor it started with. Dry, tough, flavorless, take your pick, it hit all three. If you're going to charge buffet prices, the least you can do is keep the food fresh and edible and actually restocked. The website lists a handful of entrees, but we only ever saw pork ribs, bbq chicken, & brisket. As with the meats, the sides of rice, mac & cheese, & mashed potato ran low the minute a new batch was brought out, & the staff were not quick to replenish. The understaffed restaurant could not accommodate the volume of people enticed by live music & a bbq buffet. I grew up passing by this restaurant on the drive to Santa Cruz since I was little so I was super excited to finally come here to eat. I made a reservation over the phone since their online booking page was down but I called to confirm the day of and they didn't have my name but they were able to put my name down still. Brunch is $29.95 for all you can eat. The selection itself is pretty small, there were two salads, some pancit, the lumpia seemed overcooked as it was dry, 2 types of meats, ribs, mashed potatoes that tastes like instant mash, and cornbread. I think the cornbread was probably the highlight of my meal as the other items were just kind of flavorless and uninspiring. They seem understaffed though, there was one person that was taking orders and one person refilling water for all tables. We ordered some drinks when we first sat down that didn't come until after we were done eating. Turns out the guy thats taking orders is also doing all the drinks and that just seems super inefficient. The other person is just constantly refilling waters but not doing anything else. Overall, i think one time here is enough unless they update their menu and make meals that are done better. I'm happy to pay a higher price for it but this meal wasn't worth the calories. read more

We pass by this restaurant every time we drive to Santa Cruz on highway 17. I heard about the new AYCE Texas BBQ menu with a Filipino twist. It was Father's Day weekend and we decided to check them out. We made reservations and arrived on a Saturday early evening for dinner. The restaurant is located in Los Gatos along side the highway 17 towards Santa Cruz. Parking is accessible out front in the parking lot. From the outside, the restaurant looks like an old western saloon. As soon as you walk towards the entrance, there a patio with plenty of tables that looks inviting. Inside to your left is the bar with plenty of bar stools and a stage area where the live bands perform. The decor is rustic and historic. We chose the AYCE BBQ menu along with a glass of Chardonnay and a glass of Cats American whisky. It's rare for Texas BBQ to be offered as an AYCE so we were excited to try this. All the dishes were delicious. Some of the standout favorites I enjoyed were the cinnamon cornbread, brisket Sisig, St Louis Ribs, and the lumpia. The cornbread was soft, sweet, and moist. Brisket Sisig was different in a good way with grilled onions and tender brisket. Ribs were juicy. Lumpia was crunchy and was complemented perfectly with the mango chili sauce. Our drinks were refreshing. Overall we enjoyed our experience at the Cats Restaurant. The staff were friendly and accommodating. I found the price to be fair especially for AYCE Texas BBQ. The vibe was bustling and welcoming. Unfortunately we did not hear the live band that was gonna perform since we had to leave to our next engagement. My only gripe was the entrance back to the freeway can be a little hard especially at night and if you have to go on highway 17 towards San Jose. We've driven past this place countless times on our way to Santa Cruz and always wondered if we were missing out. Today we decided to be adventurous, save our cheat meal, and finally give it a try. We should've kept driving. $35 PER PERSON for this buffet felt like we had been robbed, but politely, with a receipt. First, I want to make something very clear: our waitress was beyond sweet. She was friendly, attentive, and deserves absolutely none of the criticism in this review. Unfortunately, she can't save what's coming out of that kitchen. The pork tasted like it had been sitting on a plate in the sun waiting for someone to remember it existed. The brisket was chopped into sad little pieces with so little seasoning that I started questioning whether salt and pepper had been banned from the building. And the chicken? I owe 7-Eleven an apology for the comparison I was about to make. Then there was the BBQ sauce. If you're going to call yourself a BBQ spot, the sauce should probably taste like BBQ sauce, not fancy ketchup poured into a different bottle. And I'm genuinely curious how old some of the photos on this Yelp page are, because the food we saw and were served looked NOTHING like those pictures. If we had walked in based solely on those photos, I would've wondered if we were even at the same restaurant. Calling this place a "must-have" or a local BBQ "staple" is wild. The food looked really good, but like most social media influencers, I know they're often paid to promote places, so I always take those posts with a grain of salt. Still, I was curious enough to give it a try. After reading some of the reviews, I'm actually glad I didn't go on Father's Day. We went on Sunday around noon. It wasn't very busy, but they were already running out of food, which was disappointing since the buffet was supposed to go until 3 p.m. The food selection wasn't great, and honestly, most of it just didn't taste very good. The ribs were probably the best thing they had, but I only got one because they disappeared so fast. Running out of food that early during buffet hours is frustrating, especially when people are paying expecting a full selection. The staff, however, were excellent. They were clearly understaffed, but everyone was friendly and worked hard. I never had to wait long for a drink, and the bartender was especially nice. I have nothing negative to say about the employees. Unfortunately, the food just wasn't good enough for me to come back. It was a one-and-done experience. My son, who's a growing teenager with a big appetite, felt the same way. His comment was, "We could've eaten something better." I hope they're able to improve the menu and do a better job keeping the buffet stocked because the staff deserves a better product to serve. The Cats has a reputation as a historic Bay Area restaurant, and while the property itself is beautiful, that's unfortunately where the positives end. We visited for Father's Day, and it was clear they were nowhere near prepared for the day. From the moment we were seated, service was painfully slow. It took nearly 20 minutes just to receive water, and even longer for our drinks to arrive. When it was time for the buffet, I was served a steak ordered medium rare that came out medium well. After sending it back, the replacement was technically medium rare, but it was so under-rested and watery that it felt like biting into a bowl of beef juice. To make matters worse, the steak sat on our table for another 20 minutes while we waited in the buffet line because the restaurant completely ran out of food. Half the dining room was left standing around waiting for items to be replenished. The food itself was equally disappointing. Nearly everything lacked flavor, with the exception of the ribs, which at least had a noticeable smoky taste. The rice was overcooked, and the lumpia was so overdone that parts of it were burnt. Overall, this was a frustrating and underwhelming dining experience, especially for a holiday meal. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a quality meal. Now I know that my favorite dishes are the chicken, ribs, coleslaw, lumpia, cornbread. Father's Day was a disappointment! As a result, I was overly apologetic to my family. It seemed the restaurant was understaffed. My partner and I were understanding but once the food came out (food ran out within 10 minutes & took a couple of customer requests to restock), it was apparent the staff and kitchen are not experienced. I'm not sure where the Filipino food comes into play because the food was a very poor representation. For instance, the lumpia was inedible/burnt. The garlic rice was inedible as well (overly oiled, fried and no fluff). The mango salad had no taste, the mash potatoes were from a box, and the beans were from a can. I can't confirm the box and can origins but it certainly tasted like it. Keep in mind, deposits were required per adult and additional fees for dessert, drinks and steak. Yet I was informed no dessert was available and an alternative option would be provided. But nothing was presented so I asked for the prepayment to be deducted from the bill. In addition, the ribeye was overly cooked and the meat quality is questionable. The neighboring table confirmed the same. How the Cats is portrayed on social media is very deceiving. The Sisig meat was more tender than the burnt brisket chunks. A raw egg was added on top. You mix the egg with the meats to cook it in the hot skillet. Came with a side of white rice that was perfectly cooked, moist but not mushy. For starter we.ordered the honey cornbread. It was very crusty on the outside and somewhat moist inside with pieces of corn mixed in. It came with a side of butter. It was sweet and full of corn flavor. Wish the outer layer was not so crusty hard. The pulled pork sandwich was good. Added more BBQ sauce and it was better. Tender pieces of pork in between soft burger buns. The bread's flavor was a bit sweet that it complented the pulled pork. Pulled pork sandwich has a side of fries There was live band music. We have driven past the Cats for three years. Finally made it in to eat dinner and it was a blast. Great service, live music, and a menu with BOTH BBQ and Filipino food! Unfortunately, they did not have lumpia but I did try the Filipino Sisig with Smoked Beef Brisket, which was topped with egg and paired with steamed rice for $20. It was tasty! Came on 4th of July Saturday at around 6p with a reservation. Ambiance was cozy and moderately lively. Food is amazing- buffet style dining. Music was a live band but they were on their last set as it seems they've been playing all day. Overall will return on a non-holiday weekend. Crowd were more on the older side and felt familiar residents of that area. Left after an hour as the guests were inebriated and we didn't want to be in their trajectory for boozy conversation. Easy arrival, a bit annoying to leave given the 1 mile trek on hwy 17 to U-turn to go east. Food was mixed - grilled chicken was great, solid ribs, good coleslaw, good mashed potatoes. Pulled pork was very greasy (maybe the last of the batch since we stopped by Sunday?), fries from my son's burger were also greasy, beans could use some work (too sweet, a bit too liquid). I saw a post about this on social media. To see Filipino food in this area caught my attention so we decided to check it out. AMBIANCE: Parking: Private parking with room for about 15 cars. Seating: Inside and outside seating. Great for pairs and groups. There's room for about 60 people. Vibes: This is one exit off of Downtown Los Gatos. It's a bit isolated so make sure you pay attention to the exit. The spot itself is neat. You see it's history with the vintage architecture. I enjoyed the pop music and appreciated their transition to their evening live music. It's a sports friendly place so a good place to watch a game. Great for a food adventure or date night adventure. FOOD: Corn bread (Recommend) I've had corn bread but this rises on my top favorites. It's the beautiful mix of honey, butter, corn, but I think it's the brown sugar and grilled delivery to eat. Sweet, soft, crunchy, and just delicious. Roasted Root Vegetable Medley (Recommend) I underestimated this order but I'm glad we ordered it. A beautiful mix of roasted brussel sprouts, carrots, red onions & roasted broccoli. This was cooked a special way as the texture was delightfully firm and soft. French Fries (Recommend) Crispy fries that was salted and seasoned with garlic, butter, rosemary, thyme, and tarragon. Feijoada (Secret Menu) (Recommend) They ran out of lumpia but this a pleasant alternative. Meat that was soft, well marinated, and fell right off the bone. A good portion of beans and stew made this dish savory and comforting. Smoked Crispy Pata (Secret Menu) (Recommend) The main course! This did not disappoint. As a Filipino I've had crispy pata but this hit differently. It must've been a mix of the smoked cooking style and spices. Delicious! CUSTOMER SERVICE: Wonderful! After many years of driving by The Cats on 17 and wondering about it, we finally went here for dinner. It's a cool spot that feels like it's from another region and another era. The live music was great. Note that it can get loud if you are in the main area...you are only there to listen to the music and not have any conversations at the table at that point. There are other tables that you can get further away from there if you want to have a conversation, so mention what you want when you make a reservation. Our waitress was cool and engaging. The cocktail was okay. The cornbread was different and got mixed reviews, I liked it probably because it was very sweet and I like dessert. The sides were good. The bbq however was not that good. Frinday night BBQ dinning bonaza! Went at 6:30 by 7:30 the place filled as the 80s band fire up the amps. This place has a awesome mountain town tavern vibe. It's so cool its just 5 minuts from San Jose. The menu has a unique life of its own, filled with awesome barbecue and steak choices. I went for the ribeye, with a monster baked potato, and house salad. Oh yeah, they have a unique four or more group menu also . Check it out on their website . I ordered a mock cocktail which was quite good. Hey, let's add some non-alcoholic beers to the menu, Heineken 0.0 and/or Corona NA as NA beers let the drives drink along with the party . Of course I had to do the lava cake, it comes in a sizzling cast iron pan with boiling butter, cake and a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The sizzling butter kept each bite piping hot, amazing. Ashley was our server, total delight, fun and knew the menu perfectly. I haven't been to The Cats for years. Things have definitely changed, and I say for the better. Cats has always been a Los Gatos treasure, and it's back on top of its game. It has a lively Mountain Town Tavern with Rock-n-Roller staff and dynamite new menu. This place was recommended by my sister. The food was pretty good, especially the cornbread. It's BBQ restaurant with some Filipino dishes on the menu. They even had a live band when we went on Friday! read more

Went for the new brunch buffet, and really enjoyed it. Several bbq options including ribs, chicken, and marinated meats off the bone. Flavorful garlic rice, creamy mashed potatoes, cole slaw, and warm soft rolls. Plus pancakes and eggs scrambled with tomatoes, onions and peppers. Friendly service, good music and a chill vibe, and well worth the price. Really the only downside was the challenging traffic on Hwy 17 to get to and from The Cats. The place was very empty as brunch is a new option there and the word still needs to spread. read more

Honestly I was a little underwhelmed by this place. The atmosphere was awesome but we weren't sure how family friendly it was. The food was pricey and the portions were tiny. The flavor was great but for that much you would think you would get more. Customer service was just ok. read more
