This will probably be the MOST HELPFUL piece of advice I can give to those of you who plan on visiting this place. Please read this review carefully. DO. NOT. COME. HERE. Came here about 3 weeks ago on a Monday night. Walked in and got a spot in the so-called caves. The hostess took us to probably the best "cave" there was, as there were steps that led up to the cave. Anyways, it took the waitress literally 30 f**king minutes to get to us. We decided to just give this is a shot and just wait, instead of walking out. While we waited I spotted a F**KING HUGE @$$ centipede!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOT 1, BUT 2!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THEY WERE LITERALLY 2 INCHES LONG....CRAWLING THE CEILING AND SIDE WALL OF THE CAVE SPOT WE WERE IN. OF COURSE CUSTOMERS WOULD NOT SPOT THAT BECAUSE IT IS PITCH BLACK DARK IN THAT PLACE WITH 2 MEASLY OLD CANDLES ON THE TABLE. My friends and I were literally calling out to the waiter, pretty much anyone to come over to tell them. My one friend literally shouted out "HELP!!!!!!!!" LOL WTF. Finally after about 10 minutes, our waiter came and we said there were centipedes at our spot and if we should move to another spot in the restaurant. Listen to me when I say that I am hardcore critic of places in Bergen County, NJ. I wanted to stay to see if these workers would actually kill these nasty @$$ bugs---guess what! THEY DIDN'T! They even LET OTHER CUSTOMERS SIT THERE AS WE WATCHED FROM AFAR!!! Alright, I'm done writing this review. Enough said. If this does not gross you out enough, I don't know what to tell you!!!! Archetypus is a beautiful cafe and the ambiance is amazing - no doubt about it. It's the perfect place for a romantic date and the food is pretty good. A bit pricey, especially the desserts, but definitely worth it. However, every time I've been there, there is always a problem with the register! Either the waiter/waitress messes up the bill or the credit card machine isn't working. Not a huge inconvenience but still.. Oh and there always seems to be at least a bit of a wait. Flashback with this one...I am a child of the 80s and grew up in Jersey City so I remembered this place from when I was in high school...I think it used to be called "Enigma." It was notorious for it's dark, cavernous space...kinda like you are in a cave with it's dark alcoves and minimal lighting. It has not changed a bit! Cute place to bring friends/people are always amazed by it's unique space. We went for dessert only (apparently it has food now, too). The desserts are huge so the four of us split two desserts...lots of decadent choices there. It was not cheap ($12 for one dessert) but the experience is worth the expense. Come armed with maps and the phone number for this place if you've never been before. It is absolutely HIDDEN. Once I was able to find the place I settled right in. My dining partner and I were kind of bummed that 10pm on a Thursday counts as "peak hours" and that there was a $12 minimum to eat in the "caves," but the desserts are expensive so it's not difficult to get up to that value. Desserts were fine and dandy and the atmosphere was cute if a little tacky. I liked the flickering candles and cozy crevices. It's just a fun and cheesy-romantic place to go. Tokk my lady friend here very intimate setting. This is an awesome placed to take a girl. Make sure you get seated in a "cave" area.Privacy in the cave area is excellent. To the staff, manager and owner, 1. You're not in NYC, you can't hack it there with this subpar teeney bop shit so stop it. 2. The people you employ are in no position ethnically to be giving other minorities shit, I saw some terrible things being snickered while your staff congregates near the back. 3. This place smells bad 4. The walls have mold and the pillows/cushions they give you are moldy and damp 5. ****Customer service is absolutely terrible! Look I know you guys really want to be like one of those hot spots further south the river road, like those in Jersey city or Hoboken but you're not and never will be. It must also be depressing to have to walk out and see NYC across the river every night, I'm sure that's the promised land for you but one that will never come to fruition. AZKADELIA: THE WAITRESS FROM HELL This is a place that I have been coming to for years. What brings me back is the ambiance and food, as well as being a place that I have reconnected with friends over the years. Unfortunately, more recently, the service has been getting worse each time I go. I can see by other reviews that I am not the only one who feels this way about the service and one waitress in particular. I refer to her as Azkaban because its easier to remember than her real changed name, which is AZKADELIA. This waitress is extremely rude, obnoxious, and unprofessional. On one of the numerous occasions where she took 20 minutes out of her shift to berate and challenge me, she placed me and a friend in a cave which was uncomfortably small with barely any room for more than 2 plates. Since it was the lunch hour and we were the only ones in the cave room, we decided to move our seats to a nearby table with more room since neither our waitress or any other employee had been back in 15 minutes. When she finally returned, we asked her if it was okay that we moved. Of course, she had a huge problem with the fact that we moved from a one person table to a normal table when the restaurant was pretty much empty. She made up some bullshit about how only the waitresses can move us. I'm sure it wasn't that big of a deal but she seemed like she was looking for a reason to argue. All I said was that I had been coming there for years and have changed my table many times before without a problem. She decided to take this as a direct insult to her and went on a tangent about how shes been working there much longer, and that we wouldn't be able to come back. After looking at reviews I see that she has threatened customers before. Its become a routine for her. Even after we asked to talk to the manager who we knew well, she continued to argue, saying that he was her boyfriend and he would side with her. Of course when he came over, he didn't side with her, but he didn't exactly try to solve the problem, which was her being a straight up unprofessional bitch. More than one of these reviews have suggested firing this person. If more than one person has complained about her on yelp, I can only imagine how many people have complained that didn't write a review. A PERSONAL NOTE TO THE MANAGER: No girl is that good in bed that your willing so sacrifice customers and the reputation of the restaurant to keep her around. read more

Have been to Archetypus cafe a few times for dinner. The ambiance is very intimate and romantic and is designed like the inside of the cave. The food is pretty pricey but tasty. My favs include the cheese plate, greek pizza, and sandwiches. The deserts are also really yummy. Would recommend coming here for something light. One downside is that they don't take reservations. read more

Let me say i was a lil weary for a moment as i had called and asked to make a reservation and they told me they don't do reservations but when i got there they told me there was a way to do it through yelp i was slightly discouraged but then the ASM treated us with such grace and poise i was amazed as we was able to order and drink our wine while waiting for the cave he then placed us at our favorite table we was constantly checked on and was helped with every single request they were so kind and absolutely amazing the food was beyond delicious and at a such a low price it almost felt like a steal some of the best cheese cake around and the wrap was absolutely STUNNING food that feels and taste good and that's what matters when we left the asm chased us down and wanted to thank us for our patient and gave us coupons we will 100% come back thanks to the asm i wish we would have caught his name but thanks so much we appreciate it read more

Save your money. This place gets packed I think cus everyone wants to eat in the caves. Its a cute idea - the decor is alright but, the food sucks! There are better and cheaper lahmajun and quesadillas available in the area. The desserts have been recommended to me but when I ordered chocolate chip cheesecake all I got was a plain cheesecake with some chocolate sauce and stale chocolate chips dumped on top (and for 9 bucks a slice I might add...12 if you want a scoop of Edy's with it). Okay, maybe it was my mistake going on a Friday night, but my friend and I arrived at the restaurant at about 815 and were told that it would be a 30 minute wait to be seated. We were fine with this and sat down. An hour and a half later we were seated in out little cave dwelling. We were annoyed and starving, but excited to finally be at our table. Another 40 minutes passed until we were asked what we wanted to drink. Once our order was actually taken, everything went fine. Service was slower than most restaurants and servers were scarce ($4 for a soda, I was hoping I'd get a refill. I was about to go get it myself), but the food was okay. Nothing too amazing, it's really about the atmosphere. But I wouldn't go back, I'd rather get better food at a regular Greek restaurant and not pray for the sweet kiss of death as I wait in the heat of my cave corner for a server to finally notice me. read more

Hubby & I went here for dinner. The food was OK. Chicken gyro felt like it was missing something, but the chicken itself was good. I did really like their wrap. First and foremost, the decor alone will drive you back to this place. Great for a date. (be sure to request cave seating in the back) Greenery and dim lighting throughout the cafe. The candles along the walkway give it such a great touch. The staff was kind, attentive and extremely helpful in answering my questions over the phone. I've tried the food here in the past, nothing to be crazy about, but the dessert is delicious. There is a page of desserts to choose from. I recommend the warm ghirardelli brownies with marshmallow, nuts, hot fudge and ice cream. Absolutely tasty. With that, I ordered a teapot which came with a bowl of lemon and a jar of honey, which I thought was nice. The 3 stars is mostly for the quality of food, but other than that..nice place, decent pricing and great setting. Careful when requesting cave seating during busy hours, there is a minimum charge per person. Also, very limited meter parkings directly across from the cafe so be patient. read more

I love this place! The indoor seating is really unique (like a cave) and in the summer, there's also an open garden area out back. The sundaes are why a lot of people come here but rest assured, the entrees are also very tasty. Went here for dinner with my wife. Wasn't in a very good mood, thanks to a rough week of work. Cool ambiance with the abstract, cave setting. Quesadilla, breadsticks and BBQ chicken salad were an excellent shared meal. The server (Dre) was awesome. Just when I thought my mood was set on negative, he found a way to remind me that kindness and good service are still alive. If you want to be treated like a second class citizen this is the place for you. My fiancé and I were seated for well over 10 minutes with no sign of a waitor greeting us before I decided to get up and ask for a manager. Mind you, two seperate couples were seated after us and got their foods before us. The hostess by the front door asked if there is anything he can do and I told him no, I wanted to speak to a manager. Another waitor introduced himself and asked if there is anything he can do. I first asked if he was the manager and he stated no there is no manager at the restaurant since there is one business owner. I am completely appalled knowing no one is in charge of running this place. I then proceeded to tell the second waitor what happened. He was completely apologetic and took our order. Before I went I read through a couple of reviews just to see what this place was about. I also went on their website. They don't take reservations anymore and when you call a head you can only be put on the "seating list" for four people or more. So we just went. The hostess was super awesome and we got seated really quickly in an awesome cave. The food was so good! and reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. I had to take my Baja Supreme home it was so big. One of my friends ordered a Chicken Gyro-it was HUGE! it took all three of us to finish it. Then there was dessert! We shared a deluxe dessert! There was so much! for one person the dessert is a bit much but split between three people it's cheaper than Ben and Jerry's and better. I've been to this place many times but my parents have not. I decided to take my parents out to dinner and then to Archetypus for dessert. I know that the food is delicious here and they have pretty good drinks from the cappuccino to the milk shakes. The problem is as a family of four as we walk in and request seating in the "cave" area, the server scoffed and muttered that there is a $12 minimum per person to sit in that section. This cheapens the experience and detracts away from the great ambiance the place provides. For an establishment in Bergen County, you'd think that management and the owner would have a little bit more class. Though the food is great and the ambiance is nice, I will not be going back due to the lack of class, after all, if you lack class, god knows what else the establishment lacks in the kitchen. read more
