The food was varied (although not a massive choice for vegetarians) and fairly priced for non-chain pub fare my double egg, chips and beans came in at just under £6 and the boyfriend's vegetarian cottage pie was just over £8. Both meals were delicious (some of the nicest chips and onion rings I've had in ages!) and the service was quick and very friendly. I'd agree that the atmosphere in the pub isn't the liveliest even at 8 9pm on a Saturday night the place was a bit quiet, but this was my first visit to Battle so can't say if it's like that everywhere. Still, it made for a nice meal and a much needed rest at the end of the day! With such lovely staff (and an adorable cat), I'd definitely return here.

The bartender, who was also our server/waiter, was very friendly and helpful and told us to sit anywhere we liked and when we were ready to order just come up to the bar and let him know. I, of course had the fish and chips with peas. The chips were just frozen french fries fried up and not very good, but the fish was very yummy! Fresh, flaky, and not greasy at all. I was in heaven with this fish and it's nummy yummy partner, the tartar sauce.....mmmmmmmm good! What can I say about the peas except they were fresh and very good. Upon arriving you are greeted by the bar and to be honest that's exactly what you want we did book as this is a very popular destination for Sunday lunch time. We didn't wait long before we were seated, we sat in the back room that opens up into the garden via big double doors, the menu is very limited on a Sunday purely due to the popularity of their Sunday carvery but their is other options including vegetarian. The carvery has a wide selection including gammon, pork belly (with crackling), turkey, lamb, topside beef and sirloin of beef so take your pick and heap it on! The atmosphere is very pleasant and the staff are friendly, warm and couldn't do enough to make sure your time spent there is as good as possible. The grounds that are to the back are pleasant and offer seating for eating or just as a beer Garden, along side that there is a really good slide for the kids to keep them busy. Now the reason I have only given 4* and not 5* is simply the parking issue! While there is parking there and is ample, on a Sunday it's just not big enough, most of the time the car park is full so your forced to park half on the road and half on the grass to the side of the road and its worth mentioning that the road is more of a country road and is not all that wide so if you have a nice car you don't feel that comfortable parking there! I always insist on having fish and chips when by the seaside and was almost disappointed to not find this basic pub grup offering here ... the menu is a lot more sophisticated and I had my cod served served on a bed of sweet potato. The fish is caught locally and was beautifully presented and delicious. We had a taste of the chips as a starter along with freshly baked bread (on the premises!) and pickled eggs (I was too squeamish to try those, but apparently they were delicious and definitely not of the turned-blue-on-the-counter type). And we didn's stop there, the pudding menu was just too tempting. I decided to stick to ice cream (bakewell tart flavour!) and soon had food envy as other's plum compote, tarts and cakes arrived - everything tasted just as wonderful as it sounded on the menu and looked on the plate. We found the pub and were immediately impressed. Plenty of seating outside as the weather was luckily warm. Cheerful bar staff with a lovely selection of ales and lagers. That was a good start as we looked at the menu. Burgers and sharing platters were ordered. They arrived a little later and, I will add, together. There is nothing worse than each person getting their orders at different times. Lovely food and well prepared. All in all a wonderful pub. Good food, great service and pricing very reasonable. A great, friendly pub with a good restaurant (lots of fish straight off the trawlers on Bexhill and Hastings seafronts) I've been going here man and boy since 1990. The beer is always well conditioned and regular's are Harveys, Bombadier and other top ales. Landlady Mindy does front of house and her husband Shaun is the chef -you're always guaranteed a warm welcome. Oh and if you spot my Dad, John tell him dinner's on the table, he's the bald chap nursing a pint of Harveys.
