Tai Pan Chinese Restaurant - lobster with "yee mein"

The parking lot is quite large, so lots of parking spots available. There is also a supermarket located in the basement floor of the restaurant. Upon entering, I noticed it looked a bit dated. All of the lights are probably very, incredibly dusty... most likely hasn't been cleaned since the day they opened. Lots of lights, but still managed to have very dim lighting. We went for the 8 course dinner set, which you can choose 8 dishes to get out of the many dishes they offer for this set. Let me preface first that I am from Boston and definitely have had New England/Maine lobster BUT I honestly never realized how good our lobsters are. The ginger scallion stir fried lobster with yee mein was a generous portion, but taste wise I couldn't get down with it. The lobster has a bad aftertaste that kind of just lingers & the yee mein was not actually even yee mein... plus could've been more flavorful. The best dishes I found they had were the duck & the soup. I think it's quite difficult to mess up on both those dishes though, to be frank. The worst dish I had here was the chicken. Everyone at our table agreed that it was extremely dry & barely edible. Cleanliness: One thing that I am always looking for and super mindful of when I first sit down to eat at a restaurant is how clean are their utensils? How clean are the plates & bowls? etc. Plates were pretty dirty, bowls were fine for soup, & utensils-- it is a good thing they do single use wooden chopsticks. Overall, their food is not great but also good Chinese food in England is either really hard to find or doesn't exist. The Chinatown in Liverpool is a ghost town and looks abandoned , so my guess is that good, authentic Chinese food must be rare to come by.

I've wanted to try bao buns for a long while now but the majority of places do pork versions and as I don't eat pork that left me out to dry. Luckily Su caters to all and the crispy aubergine and sweet pepper vege bao buns are utterly delightful. Packed full of flavour and dangerously moorish. At around 3.50 each they aren't badly priced either. I'd need two for lunch but one is perfect for a quick snack. We went to the event stall on St Anne's Square but we're delighted to hear she's got a place on deansgate. I genuinely can't wait to try these again. Su herself is such a lovely, bubbly person. She clearly loves what she does and you can taste that in the lovely homemade food she sells.

The menu is expansive, covering many dim sum delicacies, lots of roasted duck dishes, including a variation that resembles Peking/Beijing duck, but without the added prep substituting a good roast duck in exchange for an on-demand item, all the seafood favorites (whole steamed fish, lobster, crab) and even some regional favorites never found on overseas menus, like Dinghu Shangsu (which is a mixed vegetable dish comprised of fresh and rare dried veggies like clouds ear, snow fungus, osmanthus, pickled Dictyophora, lotus seeds, silver needle fungus, et.al.) Service is typical efficient Asian, that if you get your order in from the start, everything progresses quickly and arrives expediently. If you attempt the Euro custom of adding this and that as the dining commences, you'll probably get frustrated trying to constantly interrupt the running servers to add just one more dish to your meal. Order up front and be happy. It's also a typical family-style banquet house, so as the crowds fill up, it will become quite loud with conversational chatter. All in all, a wonderful find parket outside of City Centre and nowhere near the Manchester Chinatown proper. Instead, this is where the local workers and families go to have a special lunch or dinner, and that's the ideal for really good Chinese food.

One is a tick box menu in Chinese only, the other is a laminated card that has English and Chinese, but is not as extensive as the Chinese only one. Just an FYI. Most of the standard stuff is in the English menu, but if you don't see it, make sure to ask because they probably do have it just isn't listed. Attentive and very helpful staff. This place is more than decent, it's great. I'd definitely come here more often if I didn't live in the so many hours away.

Ocean Palace was one of the three suggested. When I arrived at the large restaurant Saturday night around 6:00 p.m., the place was fairly empty -- one couple, one large family with kids. Normally, this would concern me -- crowds are an indicator of good food, especially at meal times, right? -- but since it was off-season, that was perhaps to be expected, and since I had that recommendation, I went for it. The servers were professional, and the food came quickly. I ordered hot and sour soup, roast duck with plum sauce, and fried rice. Funny thing -- I somehow expected the hot and sour soup to be different than the hot and sour soup I get back in the U.S., but I guess it's the same all over. I felt as if I was at home. The duck surprised me, though. I guess I expected a dry-roasted duck with sauce either on the side or drizzled over the slices, but instead, the slices of duck were sitting in a bowl of plum sauce. Not that I'm complaining ... I was just surprised. The meat was moist, the sauce lightly flavored, not overpowering the duck. I'd definitely go back to explore a little deeper into the menu when next in Blackpool.

After we were made aware that it was a cantonese restaurant, we agreed we would try it out one night. The evening we visited was on a Sunday in April, the place was empty which put us off slightly as we seem to find that quiet places are not very popular, but we made the assumption that it was in fact the Easter weekend. The restaurant is nicely decorated and the sounds of Chinese music playing on the system is just about right to still have a conversation with the people you are dining with. I won't go into boring detail about the food, but it was delicious and cooked to perfection, we had 2 courses each and had no room for anything else. Two small suggestions would be to add toothpicks on the table, we had spare ribs for starters and had bits stuck between out teeth, also the packed hand wipes could be replaced by hot wet towels on a plate, this is not a criticism though, just a personal preference of mine. The staff are lovely, definitely service with a smile and made us feel very welcome, we have now been at least five times and the place has been a lot busier than our first time and if you need anything then all you need to do is look over to the service area and they are straight over. I wouldn't say Lou Shang was the best cantonese restaurant I have tried, but it definitely is in the top 1.

This restaurant has been around for ages, even earning accolades such as Gordon Ramsey's Best Chinese Eatery. However, management has apparently changed and the owners fell on hard times recently. You can't really tell the restaurant has had problems, however. The food was excellent when we went and the service was outstanding. We ordered the tasting menu, as we'd never been to Yu & You before and wanted to try a bit of everything. Prices are a bit high for the area, so maybe save this place for a date night. There is a full bar and plenty of dishes to choose from. I think our favorite dish was the lobster, but honestly everything was lovely. We had a lot of extra food as well, so it was nice to take our leftovers to-go for a cold Chinese food breakfast in the morning ;) Definitely recommend this location for those in the area. The overall impression is that it is over-staffed by young inexperienced staff. As a consequence basic service is very good, but if you ask a question, they have to go and get an elder to sort it out. The menu was rather uninformative: there are only three pork main dishes for example but only one gets a description Honey Roasted Char Sui Pork served with fresh greens. We ordered Thai Style Crispy Pork (no further description). What we got was something that looked remarkably like sweet and sour pork with extra chilli. Four of us had a selection of appetisers (Crispy Wan Ton, Seaweed, Sesame Prawn Toast, Salt & Pepper Ribs); Crispy Duck with 11 pancakes (doesn't divide by 4); Thai Style Crispy Pork, Fillet Steak Cantonese Style, Stir Fried Chicken with Black Bean sauce, Egg Fried Rice and Soft Noodles. The dishes were all tasty, but some of the vegetables were perhaps a little under-cooked: almost raw. Again the service was good: they allowed us to change Steamed Sea Bass for Thai Style Crispy Pork, and allowed us to change the Egg Fried Rice to a mixture of rice and Soft Noodles. The food was good, not the best Chinese I've ever had, but definitely amongst the best: my problem is the cost. I don't know if it has gone up since winning the Restaurant of the Year accolade, but it is certainly very dear now. The winning menu is available which includes a Wagyu (a.k.a. Kobe) beef dish and costs £80 per head. We chose something more modest: the above banquet for four people, a bottle of water and a relatively modest bottle of wine came to a substantial £170+ bill. Individual dishes don't seem too dear, but it all seems to add up rather alarmingly. The restaurant has a slight night-club feel with a large bar area and strange choice of background music and a good sized car park. Overall: a good meal, copious inexperienced staff, expensive bill. If it was better value it would be 4*, as it is three will have to do.
