We enjoyed a very nice dinner at Class Act at the Kirkwood Hotel. Service was wonderful and all the food tasty and well presented. Duck poutine with local curds from Dan and Debbie's was so good. Drinks (8/10): The cosmo was solid, though I wish it had been a little sweeter. Still enjoyable! Food (5/10): The roast chicken was moist, but it just didn't have much flavor. Honestly, most of the food needed more seasoning. The biggest turnoff was that part of my chicken came out pink and a little bloody. I know that can happen and still be "normal," but it was pretty unappetizing. Ambience (8/10): Definitely fancier and darker than most places in town. Not a bad thing--it has an upscale vibe. Just very, very quiet, which can feel a little stiff. Service (8/10): Our waitress was quick and accommodating! Didn't get to go back to this restaurant, but I did enjoy my first experience there for a Mother's Day brunch. My order was basic, omelette and French toast. And they also had a bread basket (which is my kryptonite). Prices were average. The space is very contemporary and inviting. The Restaurant sits within The Hotel at Kirkwood Center, which is in a very unassuming part of town. Except for its proximity to and connection with the Kirkwood Community College, there didn't seem to be much in close range/walking distance. I had lunch here while my husband attended a meeting, and I was so glad I made that choice! Delicious food, impeccably plated, with an attentive server ready to refill my water and tea. I tried the cream of celery soup with a half salad and was so smitten I was sending photos to friends after the first tastes. I had not planned to order dessert but it seemed like a mistake not to... and am happy to report that the flourless chocolate cake was amazing. We held our annual Christmas Eve gathering tradition here again this year, and they did not disappoint! I was excited to learn that they had a brunch menu this year, which was full of decadent entrees and appetizers, as well as spirited holiday drinks for the adults. Our waiter was absolutely wonderful and provided top notch service to our rather large group. Absolutely everything was on point! I fully support a learning environment, but I also encourage supervision and quality control. Our waitress was a wonderfully pleasant person - she made her suggestions which we gladly took. The lemonade? Heaven. The house salad with citrus vinaigrette? Ok.....a little bland, but ate it all. The steak with sweet potato fries? A definite no!!!! The sweet potato fries were soaking in grease, cold and soggy. The steak had an odd gray color that was somewhat masked by the large clumps of raw fat and sinew (I ordered my steak medium so was expecting the fat to be somewhat rendered). Most of the steak was unable to be chewed. It did have a great tasting chimichurri sauce (ate that all). My friends had the same thing..... nearly three complete steaks returned to the kitchen. The steak was a price I was expecting at a higher end restaurant. I will consider that a donation to a learning environment, but won't likely be back for second lesson. read more

My every week go to place for my happy hour. Jared, Josh and Gabe have been the great bartenders for me and my coworkers. Their happy hour is 2 for 1 from 4-6 from Monday through Friday. Their cocktails are one of the go to ones. If you would like to appreciate a great Manhattan a great Old fashion, you should definitely stop by. I am fan of theirs Heated Mule as well, a nice spicy flavor to a cocktail and guess what they use grey goose to make their Mules. Once tried their dessert some chocolate cake with housemade vanila ice cream from their food menu and guess what I flipped to a lightest and tastiest chocolate cake ever. A tip - So if the bartender is Jared order margarita, if Gabe is bartending order Heated Mule and if Josh is working then go for Old Fashion. All of them make great Manhattans. read more

The menu runs the Gambit with several veggie options as well as soups sandwiches and desserts created by the students. The servers are also participants in the program giving all students a chance to see the world from the front and back of the house. If you ask nice they will show you the class rooms . Even knowing this was essentially a student-run business, I was lead to expect a lot more. Nothing about this experience was fine dining. The hotel is unremarkable and there is little to no direction guiding you to the restaurant as a local guest. It is tucked immediately off the lobby and hallway. The decor is modern, but cheap. Despite the staff being dressed formally, there is no dress code - meaning we were dressed up for date night sitting next to a pair in fishing attire. The feeling was like being in some sort of fancy restaurant TV set that was arranged in the middle of a hotel lobby? As far as service, we were promptly greeted and seated. Everyone we interacted with was courteous and attentive. The most disappointing aspect was the food. When you're paying this much for a meal, it has to be right. We ordered the filet mignon and the pork chop. The flavors were not good, but on top of that our steak was overcooked and the pork was cold like it'd been sitting. The potatoes that came with the steak were delicious while the risotto with the pork tasted like undercooked bacon and cheese rice-a-roni. The seasonal vegetables were flavorless. We wanted dessert, though not being able to touch our entrees didn't really set the right mood. I wanted to chalk the ordeal up to a student-made meal and just head home, but right as we were leaving my boyfriend pulled aside one of the hosts. It was our anniversary and we were trying to have a special evening and he just couldn't leave it like that. After we expressed our disappointment, they were adamant about making it right. In all fairness, we hadn't spoken to our waitress or given them the opportunity to fix our food, so we didn't expect much. They were generous enough to give us a gift card to comp part of our meal so hopefully their brunch menu will be a better experience! read more

I am staying at the hotel for a week on business. I was initially very impressed by the facility and service. After being taken out to dinner by coworkers last night, I was looking forward to checking out The Class Act restaurant for dinner. I arrived back at the hotel at 6:30 p.m. and walked straight into the restaurant where a very nice gentleman expained to me that they had no seating for one person at the rurestaurant all evening because it was their special World culinary Tour event night. However, he stated that singles could be served the full menu at the bar and the three tables located directly outside of the bar. Two people were sitting at the bar and the three tables were empty. I sat down at one of the tables and proceeded to wait... and wait ... and wait ... I never saw anyone behind the bar, and after over 30 minutes I walked back to the restaurant and asked if anyone was serving in that area. The gentleman went and checked and came back and said "he's behind the bar." When I asked if I needed to order at the bar, he said "no, I'll send him out." It was a big mistake to stay, but I was very hungry after a long day working. The "service" was indifferent/aloof throughout. I started with the house salad, which was very good. However my knife was taken away before the short ribs were served and by the time the bartender returned to the bar (he never came back to the table) and I got a knife, they were cold and tough. To his credit, which resulted in a one star rating being increased to two, when the bartender returned with my check he finally asked how everything was (apparently not noticing that I only took one bite). I said "not good" to which he replied "I'll take care of that." He returned with the desert menu and offered me a complimentary dessert. I looked at the menu, and since they had my favorite, creme brulee, I ordered that. It was fine, but I really wish I had a car (there is NOTHING nearby) and had left and had an actual dinner. read more

We came here for dinner on a Friday evening after hearing positive reviews. Unfortunately, we had a disappointing experienced. We ordered the ribeye and the lamb. Both meals came with a soup. The soups were actually pretty good - potato leek soup and the Argentinian chorizo soup. When the lamb arrived, we almost laughed out loud at the size of the portion. Two little chops with barely any meat on them whatsoever. To make matters worse, the chops were utterly flavorless. No flavor whatsoever. The garnish, however, was very good. We left hungry. The ribeye (I asked for medium well, which usually comes with a pink center) was burnt. The vegetables were too crunchy for my taste, but the potato cake was good. For dessert we had coconut cheesecake with mango glaze, which was very tasty; and a tiramisu, which was very good. I know that open kitchens are a thing now, but this particular kitchen was extremely noisy and the exhaust system didn't seem strong enough to keep the cooking smells out of the dining area. We don't think we will be returning. What a shame. read more

I was so impressed with our beautiful, delicious meal at the Class Act. We ordered the Ribeye (fantastic), the angus bavette (flank steak), the Halibut and a burger. Everything was prepared perfectly and presented in a elegant fashion! The bavette was especially delicious in my opinion. I will absolutely return for the food (very well-priced, I might add) and for the upscale fine dining experience. The service is excellent and the ambiance is sophisticated- the hotel connected to it is gorgeous. Don't miss out on dining here, you won't be disappointed. The Class Act Restaurant on the Southside of Cedar Rapids is by far one of the best tastes in Iowa. Leo said "The steak is in one of the top two steaks he has ever eaten an a restaurant". We had the Christmas Eve Special with Mussels as the appetizer. Yes Mussels in Iowa! And they were delicious cooked in a light wine sauce and I didn't even have to fight over the last bite. The creamy risotto rice with blue cheese mushrooms was the best rice mixture I've ever had. Bursting flavors in my mouth. The steak was perfectly prepared, medium rare, sliced easily and just melted in my mouth. The red peppers and asparagus sautéed just enough to maintain their color, crunch and original flavor. They have culinary art students working in 3 kitchens in the back and they hire them to work in the main kitchen who serves the restaurant. I just want to shout out Kirkwood, for having the best restaurant in Iowa. Thanks Mindy Sue for telling me about it because I still can't stop thinking about it 10/10 recommend! It's true, we had an amazing time. The boyfriend and I went to the Class Act to celebrate our one year anniversary, and what a good choice it was. Despite a minor hiccup in the seating arrangements at the beginning, once we were at our correct table things went smoothly. We were give a very romantic and intimate round booth table under a beautiful chandelier, set with care. We started off with the Local Butchers Block, then selected the Lamb Wellington and New York Strip for our entrées. The Butchers block had one item in particular that really caught my attention pickled radishes, such a combination of flavors, you have bitter to sweet to savory such a flavor experience. Oh and my Lamb was so delicious I almost didn't want to share a bite, and the New York strip had great seasoning on it. The end of our meal we were told dessert was on them, so we selected the Signature Flourless Chocolate Cake, and the Deep Dish Lemon Poppy Seed Pie. When it was delivered we were surprised they wrote "Happy Anniversary " in chocolate on the plate, such a special touch.. Again the flavors were so delightful that I had to wrestle a bite from the boyfriend of his cake. In the end, this place is such a treat. If it's a date night or a place to meet old friends, this is a wonderful place to treat all your senses, and it keeps you wanting to come back for more. Till next time, keep it classy. read more

Really had to put some thought into this review. When we walked in the place is so inviting. Open and roomy and very elegant. We were seated in a booth that was very comfortable. Downside....my view was into the kitchen, while this can be interesting, I really dontbwany to look at a kitchen while I'm dining. Our waitress was great. She really knew what high end service is. We visited late on a Sunday afternoon and the brunch menuwas still being served. Not a problem it looked really interesting. We had the mushroom omelet which was good and the Cuban. Not a bad Cuban but far from the best I've ever had. One downfall was the flies and fruit flies flying around. Not swarms but enough to irritate. This place is faaaancy!! My literal only complaint is it was so fancy I wasn't quite sure how to eat my food! So who knows if I did it right?! Right or wrong it was scrumptious! I ordered 3, I got the EGGPLANT POT DE CREME with charred berbere carrots/yogurt (his one was the hardest to eat, I am a clean eater and I made a total mess with this one... oops! It's a little on the peppery side but yummy none the less), TULIP TREE FOXGLOVE CHEESE with trail mix toasts/apricot compote (drool!) and one of the soup du jors which was white bean and kale. All delicious! My husband had the CLASS ACT BURGER which is grilled 8 oz HK beef patty, smoked colby cheese, traditional garnish, cherrywood-smoked bacon, aioli, challah bun. That's his go to. He looooves it! We finished our dinner off with the AMARETTO CRÈME BRÛLÉE with thyme-poached plums, toasted almonds and the CARROT CAKE PILLOW with cream cheese mousse, walnut praline crisp, pineapple sauce, hokey pokey ice cream. I love the World Tour!! Whoever came up With this idea is a genius!! My husband and I have been at each event this far. We have enjoyed the foods, flavors and experience. It took quite a while for the drinks and food to come out, but we were thankfully not in a hurry. The wait was worth every second when our food came out! I got the corned beef hash and it was one of the best I've ever had! Wonderfully flavorful, the potatoes (including sweet and regular) mixed with onions, green peppers, pieces of real corned beef, cheese, and spices that paired well made it a dish to write home about. My fiancé had the steak and eggs with a similarly wonderful experience. If you have a few hours to have a slow-paced brunch, this is the place to be! read more

The food at The Class Act is always stellar and the customer service is great! The atmosphere is terrific as well!

3.5 stars. This restaurant boast an elegant vibe and largely good food - I imagine it would be a pretty good place to bring a date. In general, we found the desserts were excellent, the main courses were pretty good, and the appetizers were a bit wanting, so plan accordingly! On the "very good" side, we really enjoyed the ribeye roulade and the Asian-spiced short ribs. Both mains featured very tender and well-flavored meats. We tried the house salad as an appetizer, which didn't work very well, but it was a very good salad and it would have made a fine entree. On the dessert side, I think my favorite was the bread pudding (possibly because the peanut butter ice cream was so divine, especially on the hot dish). We also really liked the red velvet cheesecake (very rich!) and the carrot cake pillow. On the less good side, I found the bollito misto bland as all get out. The eggplant pot de creme is an oddly deconstructed dish and it's difficult to put back together in a way where the flavors work together. The scallion challah was fine, but not significantly better than the free bread so why bother? The creme brûlée itself was good, but the poached plums were tough and kept separate from the dish - we would up leaving it behind on the plate because we couldn't cut it! Service was efficient and courteous, and they have a nice selection of beer, wine, and cocktails. Overall, I would go back to support the mission, but I'd focus on beef-based mains and save lots of room for dessert! read more

It can be a little frustrating when they get things wrong, but I think I agree this is a great place to go and I would come back. The décor is kind of amazing for being sort of in the middle of a bunch of fields and far suburbs of Cedar Rapids. It feels like a downtown hotel. The entire staff is very young and obsequious, sometimes too much, but that's how it goes. I thought my meal of rack of lamb was really terrific. Some others were not so happy, including finding actual string used to tie up the meat. (on some sort of pork dish) The main problem is all of the service is verrrrrry slow, and the drinks service is unbelievably slow. Like it is super nuts how slow it is getting drinks. Perhaps if they could speed up the drinks we wouldn't mind the other slowness!! A group of 6 got in two drink orders and deliveries during a roughly hour and a half. That was the part that really upset some of us. They do have some interesting cocktails on the menu, but nothing worth having again. I found the bathroom, which is very far away from the dining area, and I saw some kid in the bar obviously struggling with receipt paper and mixing drinks. Well, best of luck to him! read more
