Driving on the left hand side is not something to choose easily....I have only done it once before in 1982 in Jamaica and it was fine because I was incredibly young and the roads were less travelled back then but it's hard to change. I know many accidents/ deaths that have happened because of this. Anyway we decided to do the train bit. When we arrived at the York train station we had some time to wait so Joe said " Go check out the Booths" I already knew this is a grocery store chain in England and had seen it before But I was blown away at this one and was surprised to find it at the Windermere train station. I spent a good 45 minutes in there and purchased many items for our next destination. Beautiful produce and it also had a whole bakery area and a area with pharmacy type items too. When Joe insisted I go honestly I was a bit annoyed like Why? Lol Great store! Best in town!

Booths by a wide margin is the largest and nicest grocery store in Windermere. Excellent selection…read moreof produce, international and British staples, and a massive wine and liquor section. I made several Thai dishes and Booths had all the necessary ingredients from fish sauce to palm sugar to dried kaffir lime leaves. Prices are much lower and the selection much larger than you'd find in London. Try £26 for a bottle of Veuve, and yes we bought a case for Christmas lunch! If you're self catering in the Lake District and are looking for quality well above your average Tesco Express, be sure to make the drive to Booths.

It has a fair selection of convenience products to suite everyone. From Toothpaste to sticky buns for that after the walk cuppa Fresh fruit & daily newspaper available. Like most Spa shops open until late. As small selection of alcohol is available also.

The fresh produce is excellent, and includes what taste like fresh baked rolls, sandwiches and a good selection of fruit and veg. If you have forgotten a grocery item you will probably get it here. They also sell tobacco and alcohol. The staff are helpful if slightly overwhelmed, sometimes. It is cheaper to go here than to Booths on the edge of the town. There is another branch in Priory Rd. on the way to the leisure center.

The main seating area is in the basement and is very cosy (and usually quite full!) with an old bread oven at the rear of the room. As you would expect, you can have many kinds of tea and coffee here - all very good. There are also tasty cakes and homemade soups. On a sunny day you can sit outside as there are a few tables set out on the pavement. On the ground floor is a shop area selling all things tea and coffee. This is also pleasingly old-fashioned with lots of dark wood and decorative old tins storing different varieties of tea.

I asked if I could get a scone and a soup and was told that I could buy the soup from the sandwich counter but would have to get the scone from the other counter. As seating was extremely limited we stepped back to contemplate eating here. But then... we saw the sign for the tea room upstairs! We ventured up to take a look and we were greeted by much nicer people. We were seated immediately and ordered our lunch. I opted for the Lakeland Cream Tea and my husband had the Pastrami Deli sandwich. Service was excellent and the food was amazing. The upstairs is a solid five-star, I only dropped my overall rating to four-star because of our experience with the girl at the sandwich counter when we first walked it.
