I'm pretty conscious about where the money leaving my purse is going to end up. Given the choice, I'll try and shop locally and with independent traders if I can, as long as the price is right. Its why I'm quite pleased my local shop is a Co-op.
However the ability to shop with a reasonably clear conscience is one of the few plus points about this particular branch of co-op food. Situated on the edge of an estate, it's like they know they've got a pretty captive audience who aren't able/willing to venture further to get a better deal or better produce.
And it's the quality of the produce which gives me the biggest cause for complaint to be honest. On more than one occasion I've seen fresh food like strawberries and cheese all mouldy on the shelves even though it's still in date. Fridges seem to be regularly leaking onto the floor, there's almost always a 'wet floor' sign next to them and some kind of puddle seeping out from underneath being soaked up by blue paper towels.
Regular prices are not cheap, although there's usually a pretty decent selection of special offers on, and even without that I usually don't mind playing a *few* pence extra to buy from an ethical source. It's open until late every day of the week which is really convenient, and it was even open on New Year's Day this year, unlike Morrisons. There's a reasonable selection of fair trade products for sale too, although across the whole store the range of products stocked is a lot more limited than other branches of co-op food stores I've been in.
And that's the crux of the matter for me really. It's like this particular branch is the poor relation in the Co-op family. I can't help feeling that a city centre branch would never be allowed to fall into the state that this branch has been, but because it's on the edge of a fairly low-income estate where people aren't just going to hop into their cars and go to a competitor then it's been allowed to just be 'okay'.
I like Co-op. I like what it stands for. I like being able to buy ethical and fair-trade products. And those principles are what has saved this shop from getting fewer than three stars from me. read more
