A frayed high street tavern of comradely drunkards and dour barmaids, the Cock and Bottle is grotty in all the right places, with a wide bar and a name funny enough to remain memorable.
Architecturally, the pub is noticeable for containing a knocked-through corner that was, from 1850 to 1925, the smallest house in England. Just 6ft wide and 14ft from front to back, the house was home to a husband and wife who, it's reported, raised eight children there. One taller occupant had to go upstairs sideways, even after the staircase's width was doubled to sixteen inches.
The facade of this curious nugget of Wavertree is still visible from the outside although inside the pub there isn't much to suggest anything ever stood there. Still, if you want to ingurgitate an enthralling sense of local history, then sitting on the bench that took up England's tiniest living room is as good a way as any. read more
