I've been there twice as out of state visitors and each time we went the greeter didn't make us feel welcome nor did she talk at all which is dissappointing which created an uncomfortable ambiance. We have been coming to the Counter for the past 7 or 8 years, my son has food allergies and I'm a vegetarian so this is one of the only safe places for us to eat as a family. They are very good with food allergies and the customized burger is such a good option for those with dietary restrictions. My son has a wheat and dairy allergy and they have a gluten free bun an a vegan cheese, the fries are also safe for him. They have two vegetarian burger options, the Vegan patty and the impossible patty. I've had both and they are great. Lots of options for cheese and sauces and no up charge for most toppings, I always do roasted peppers, grilled onions, and pineapple. The serving of fries is also very generous. The only place where they lose points is the price, it's usually $25-30 for a burger once you add fries and fountain drinks are $5.25. I've had a wide range of wait time for food but at the most recent visit it was quick and our server was friendly, so no complaints. We will continue to return to the Counter and are so happy to have this safe option for our family. read more

The Counter has a great happy hour menu, delicious customizable burgers and salads, and an excellent rotating selection of beer on tap. The service is occasionally slow, but the servers are always pretty quick and friendly. However, sometimes there are inconsistencies with the quality of the food and there have been several times where they've gotten our order wrong. (One time they forgot to put the chicken in our chicken sandwiches!) Vibes: The restaurant is really big with a long bar that has counter seating and they have outdoor seating that is pet friendly. They have restrooms in the back of the restaurant. The music isn't too loud, they have TVs throughout the restaurant, and a take-out station near the restrooms. My very first time at this place and I'm usually the McDonald kind of burger guy. However, my wife and I were in the area and wanted to try. And, we're glad we did. The burger was amazing and the fries tasted awesome. In addition, I had the chili and it was the best chili I've ever eaten. I highly recommended. Ever heard of children's happy hour? Me neither but The Counter has invented it. Its been a while since I ate the happy hour here, or even ate at The Counter, so I decided to give them another try. Firstly, pay close attention to the * on the Happy Hour menu for drinks. We didn't, so when it said "$5 Draft Beers*", we assumed it was any that were listed. Nope - it's only the * ones. Otherwise, regular price. That's fine. I do wish it was much more emphasized. Other Happy Hour menus that reference their regular menu clearly distinguish with red, bolded font. But to the Counter's credit, they did mark it with the * so I am just warning you to pay close attention, and this applies for the wine as well. Secondly, the children's part of this happy hour is due to the size of the dishes. We got the Parmesan Fries $5, Mini sliders $9, and Southern Fried Chicken Sliders $9. Parmesan fries were decently sized. I think worth $5, for sure. But the Mini sliders and Southern Fried Chicken Sliders were incredibly tiny. At $9 you'd expect a little more than two mini rolls and malnourished chicken tenders. The sliders were slightly better, granted the beef was more substantial than the chicken but even then, it was plain insulting. I think even a child could eat more than this. Heck, go to CPK and check out their "children" portions because its twice the size of what we got here. The chicken tenders were also kind of dry and there was no sauce for the sliders, so extra dry and boring. The meat of the sliders were indeed tasty - as is their regular burgers. But the taste lasted one two bites, maybe, because by the time I could enjoy it - it was gone. I couldn't stress how disappointed we were with their Happy Hour. Rename it to "Children's Hour" or better yet, "Sad Hour". The only redeeming thing about the Happy Hour is perhaps the $5 beer - the only reason I'd come back. I am not trying to bag on them, but look at my pictures and see the portions they're trying to pass off as food for adults. IF the price for those chicken sliders were $5 and beef sliders was $7, I would understand the logic better. Do yourself a favor and grab a beer here for Happy Hour while you wait for your friend, or just to kill time, then when you are ready to eat, walk out the door and go to another place with actual Happy Hour deals that aren't laughable. read more

Every bartender we've encountered has been welcoming, even when slammed with making six milkshakes while pouring drinks for all the other tables. As for food, prices are steep, so I do expect a better quality product. There was simply no justification here, though options for non meat eaters was appreciated. Anyway, the burger I got the other night came on a cold brioche bun that seemed to be flattened (or manhandled), making it dense and doughy. The burger patty itself was a bit puck-like but hot off the grill. It was topped with melted cheese yet cold greasy onion strings, and just one sad, old piece of bacon broken in half, which made paying a premium for it pretty aggravating. All in all, a slight step up from Chili's food wise and miles above for service. We will probably be back but not very often. read more

Hubs and I went for a weekend lunch and easily found parking upstairs at Kahala Mall. We were seated immediately and given the menus. I kept going back and forth between the grilled cheese and the bacon and blue, and hubs suggested we do both of those and share. Sweet! We also upgraded to the parmesean truffle fries and some drinks. Service was good and friendly, water was topped off, and when the food finally arrived, they offered to cut the sandwich and burger and we were able to share the two. The burger was cooked to order and the grilled cheese was ooey and gooey, stick to your bones kind of deliciousness on a nice sourdough bread. This place was so good! I'll be real it can be pricy but it's so worth it. Food tastes great and service was just amazing. There was only one wait staff member when we came in and she was working between the FOH and bar and yet was so attentive and very kind! It was very calm and the customization of the burgers a sides is all around amazing. I follow a ketogenic diet and this is one of the few places i've left feeling one not ashamed to customize it accordingly and two actually have a great and filling meal! When this place opened I was in love, we'd come here quite a bit and it was an awesome treat for me to bring the kids to. Unfortunately the last few times I've been in, the food is good but not great, portion sizes have shrunken and the service is sub par. Milkshakes that used to make you shake have been down graded to things you can order two of instead of one that made you question if you could finish it, but they still charge an arm and leg. Both burgers were a touch undercooked for medium, but that is acceptable (over done is not). They take the time to carefully plate everything, so presentation was good. Cheeses were melted, onion and lettuce were fresh and clean. Tots were crispy, parm fries were really delicious. It's not a cozy or warm spot. Reminds me of a college cafeteria, with the same noise levels. They didn't warm or toast the burger buns. Back in the day, the adult shakes were a pint. Now they're 8 or 10 ounces. Yes! We were in the mood for some good old American burgers! Love that this place is close to home in Kāhala Mall so there's lots of parking and you know it's clean and spacious enough. It was a Friday evening and we made it in time for Happy Hour (M-F till 6pm starting at $4,$6,$8 menu). Our hostess greeted us to a clean and comfortable booth. There were lots on the menu to choose from indeed especially the sides and a mix and match option, too for only $12! Our waitress was friendly and kind. Lol! I think we ordered too much though- we ordered the mix and match- shoe string fries and shoe string onions (very delicious), a purist burger that I added lettuce and tomato with mayo on the side, a bacon barbecue burger and side hickory bbq wings for $8 happy hour price. We didn't finish it all but was happy with the food in general. Ok, one thing- chicken wings were in the small and super skinny side. The burgers here are stacked and customizable. I usually just order their Counter burger with side of sweet potato fries. Their counter burger also included crispy onions rings and mushrooms, how could it's not be a perfect burger? The burger was seasoned and the buns were good and wasn't soggy even with the amount of ingredients stacked between them. The garlic aioli sauce is my favorite. Makes the burger even more delicious. The sweet potato fries are fine and the sauce on the side was great and unique. Counter really knows how to make sauces. The only and main issue I have is the temperature of the burger and fries. There's a reason we keep coming back to The Counter - we've never had a bad dining experience here and always enjoy our meal. You can't go wrong with a flavorful burger that YOU choose the ingredients for! Parking can be competitive since it's next to Kahala Whole Foods, but I've never had trouble finding a spot upstairs by Ross if the lot is crazy. Prices have been steadily rising over the years, with the BYOBurger base now at $17. Seems high in a vacuum, but compare it to other sit-down restaurants, where a specialty burger can easily range from $15-25, with an upcharge for customization. The Counter lets you absolutely LOAD up your burger for $17, with exotic options like smoked gouda or pimento cheese (sooo good), quinoa, a sliced boiled egg, croutons, and green onions. This is, of course, on top of the usual suspects like lettuce/spinach/kale, fresh or grape tomatoes, grilled/fresh onions, pickles, sprouts, olives, carrots... You really can't go wrong. Like other places, I'd avoid the premium toppings, cause the upcharges add up quick, and you really don't need them to get an enjoyable experience. The Counter also has some of my favorite shoestring fries, fried crispy and seasoned perfectly. It's addictive and you get a free sauce with your burger, which offers endless combinations over 20 choices. Service has been pretty consistent, and the burger has never come out dry or under. It's one of the few places that we'll drive across the island for because we know it's gonna be a good time. My one request - it's so hard to find Hana Hou Hefe on draft, which is one of my favorite local brews. The Counter still lists it on their drink menu, but hasn't had it for a while now - bring back Waikiki Brewing Hana Hou Hefe! read more

So relieved they no longer have the QR code to pay your bill (my card got compromised,) but please make sure to check your bill before paying. If we hadn't checked our bill, we would have been incorrectly charged for a burger we didn't even order--$4 more than the burger we actually ordered. What made this kinda suspicious was that the employee didn't even wait for us to explain what the issue was on the bill, just said it'll be fixed. I love the burgers and fries here, but I ended up not feeling so great afterwards. Not sure if it was the burger or the fries or onion strings. Just got back from eating at the counter. I usually don't complain but this time I had a few issues. I ordered the happy hour chicken wings. They were ok nothing special. After taking a few bites I noticed that a couple of them were still not cooked all the way. I told our server and she said thanks for letting her know. What surprised me was that she never took the initiative to either take the wings off the check or offer to give me a discount. I'm not a burger girl normally so I would not have chosen to come here on my own volition. I'm so glad that my friend suggested The Counter and brought me here. I was excited when I saw the menu of all the different creations of burgers you could make! The last and only create your own burger place I've been to is fuddruckers in the Chicago suburbs...but The Counter was way better and catered more to my foodie taste. I chose a chicken 1/3 lb on a multigrain bun with provolone cheese, basil pesto, and went crazy with a bunch of veggie toppings. Got the sweet potato fries but these were surprisingly very soggy and I had to take a star off for that because the colleagues that I came with that ordered the sweet potato fries said the same thing so I knew it wasn't just my batch that went wrong. So let's start with walking in.... Probably a bad first impression when we walk in and three people that work there walk right by us. After someone decided to acknowledge us, we were seated and a girl came relatively quickly to take our drink orders. After she brought us our drinks.... Crickets again. Who knows, maybe this was by design to allow us time to absorb the exorbitant prices on the menu. My first thought while looking over the menu, "this better be a damn good burger for $20.50 for one burger, not including any side items." After being ignored for quite long enough we asked the same girl that brought us our drinks (and happened to pass our table 3 or 4 times by now) "are you our waitress?" That was enough to get her to take our order. Several other reviews mentioned that it took quite awhile for food to arrive but our order arrived in a reasonable amount of time. One downside was that my daughters order was not correct so we asked for it to be fixed and that took conversations with three different people to get it fixed. My wife asked for a side of their garlic aioli and with the crazy high prices they still had the gall to tell her that there would be an additional charge. Overall.... Quite possibly the worst service on the island. The horrible service, coupled with the ridiculously high prices for a mediocre burger.... We won't be going back.
