I had the Egg Benedict with Smoked Salmon. The restaurant is on the beach, though views are restricted by the pebble dunes. They serve baked goods and breakfast, in the afternoon they serve wood fired pizza. The pizza chef was there in the morning heating up the oven so that was a good sign. Downside, no wifi and somewhat strange opening hours (maybe different in peak season).

The service was lovely and so was the food. They don't have their own website and there was no menu available online, but they mostly do traditional English fare. Food came out quickly and was hot - eggs cooked perfectly! All in all a nice atmosphere for a family meal and relatively inexpensive. They had several specials on their blackboards advertising lunch, so will have to come back to try that out!

We had a calamari appetizer - not the same as you'd get in Spain, but pretty good with nice sauces. A spinach, avocado and bacon salad that was delicious, an okay prawn cocktail (something else they don't seem to get here, too much sauce and not enough shrimp), and excellent macaroni and cheese with mushrooms. Nice drink selection, including my favorite American bourbon, Buffalo Trace. I would definitely eat there again.

We were told that someone travelled around the UK and tasted 250 varieties of scones and clotted cream. This was rated the best. I can't imagine it could get any better. I'm glad that I didn't need to sample 250 to get to that conclusion. The scone were light and the clotted cream was yellow. (A sign of more butter fat). The jams were outstanding. Believe the hype at Hive…read more Our party of 3.5 (3 adults, 1 toddler) made our way over here on a blowy Saturday July morning for the breakfast essentials, and despite a healthy queue (it's counter service) Hive Beach Cafe delivered the goods in fine form. It's counter service. Weekend breakfast begins at 10am. At that time a swarm of dwellers will descend upon the counter to make sure their breakfast is accounted for. Join the queue and patiently wait (it moves pretty fast and they are very friendly and efficient). Grab a tray, order your menu items and coffees/teas, pick up drinks, sit down, grab cutlery/water/napkins, wait, food arrives. It's really all rather smooth, honestly. In fact, I'd venture to say I like this way BETTER than table service. No tracking down the check when you are ready to depart, just up and leave. Bravo! The Farmhouse Breakfast was gorgeous (see photo) and the Belgian Waffles with bacon and maple syrup were divine (though our toddler was hesitant to share, I don't blame him!). Brother in law enjoyed the Benedict and basically licked the plate. My flat white was intense and necessary. Everything was, simply put, perfect. On a nice day there are plenty of outside seats and its perfectly placed nearly ON the beach, so the views are stellar. It is the only thing around for miles, so enjoy it. The setting is pristine. If its rainy and windy (which it was), the covering is quite sufficient and seats many "inside." All this for about £50. Our best meal in the area, would definitely return.

Not even a glass of water with it being 30 degrees! We walked out! The poor quality customer service and incredibly inattentive manager was highly unbelievable. Fabulous breakfast and amazing cream teas, which became an obsession for me whilst on this holiday. Oh, and we could bring our dog in too. Compact like everything in Shaldon, The Strand Cafe is clean and pretty with its tasteful decor, and has nice views of Shaldon Beach and the Teign Estuary. The menu is very thoughtful and pleasing; I had a special for my main course called a "Beef Carbonnade", which was some kind of insanely awesome beef stew type thing with an amazing sauce and a pool of amazing creamy melted cheese on the top, plus some little, like, toasts. It was so good that I just oh my god. They also have awesome pastries made in-house, and they do hot cocoa right, whatever that means. That is to say, it works whatever it is because it is really creamy and tasty. Wow, this place. Go there.
