This place is literally at the end of road. There are no roads beyond this just the forest until you get to Fiordlands National Park. It's a long hour drive from the Haast and Route 6 which takes you north to Fox Glacier or west to Wanaka.
The drive is beautiful and we were lucky to be there on a sunny fall day. Before you go make sure to check the sign at Haast. It's a small one on the left right by the gas station. That will let you know if the place is open. It's tiny with maybe four tables and even though the website says it is open 11-4pm the hours seem pretty irregular.
This is a small single wide trailer with a kitchen on the side, picnic benches outside and a few tables inside. Also make sure to wear long sleeves and pants and have bug repellent on because this place is awash with sandflies.
In our case we got there super excited to discover the restaurant was closed for the season. So sad but glad to get out here. We hear the crayfish are just extraordinary. They are literally fresh off the boat.
So before you go make sure to call or watch for that sign. read more
