I heard about The Crux & Co through social media & found myself heading there on what was their opening day. I was expecting crowds but thankfully it was just nicely busy & I was seated in the window - great spot for a bit of people watching. The decor is light & fresh with a combination of large tables for groups or shared dining & smaller tables for those dining alone or in smaller numbers. It was the cakes that I had come for but I had a browse of the menu & was swayed enough to try the pork belly burger, which was pretty tasty & came with wedges & sour cream & sweet chilli sauce to dip them in. I probably could have used a couple more wedges but perhaps that was a ploy...it left me with space for dessert. The fridges contain cakes that look too good to eat, along with a selection of pastries as well. I was not disappointed by the raspberry/chocolate mousse cake that I had, it was a taste sensation!!! The Crux & Co are serving Five Senses coffee, tea by Ovvio & Mork hot chocolate. I was anticipating for the staff to be overly attentive & borderline annoying being the first day. I couldn't have been more wrong, service was incredibly friendly & relaxed & the food & drinks I ordered came out fairly promptly. Overall it was a really pleasant dining experience & I look forward to going back again.

Smoked salmon scrambled eggs on squid ink toast

Sunday morning on a rainy day means that there are no queues and though parking may require a wait due to the everlasting popular kettle black across the road, there are lots of spots and it's free. Crux and co is difficult to spot amongst a variety of corporate and apartment buildings. Enter a bright airy space with typo or kikki k like look and feel. Service is quick if not pushy even though there was no wait at this cafe. I was asked a coupe of times about my order within 3 minutes of sitting down. My extra hot skim cappuccino had a rough acidic flavour and I could taste the chalkniness of the milk separate to the pungent coffee. A coffee not well made. Between the two of us, we got the lobster bisque Benedict which arrived with two prawns on crusty stale squid ink toast and the smoked salmon scrambled eggs on squid ink toast. Despite being two different dishes, they tasted quite similar. I couldn't taste the spicy sriracha mayo on my smoked salmon scrambled eggs. There wasn't enough Benedict sauce on the eggs, which meant that it lacked flavour. Two prawns in one dish doesn't make it a dish with prawns as the highlight. Our bill was quickly placed in front of us within five minutes of us putting our forks down. The dishes are unique, taste good but if you order two different dishes you expect them to taste different. The coffee was below average. May go back to try other dishes but will be getting my coffee elsewhere.

Bisque benedict with tiger prawns, poached eggs and a lobster bisque hollandaise served on squid ink toast ($20.50)

Located a short walk from the domain interchange tram stop and just across from the equally popular Kettle Black cafe, Crux and Co was bustling on a Sunday morning. We waited about 20-30 minutes for a table of two when we arrived at 10:40am. The only natural light that entered the cafe was through the windows right at the front of the cafe, with the rest lit by ceiling lights. The interior was a little cosy with tables in very close proximity of each other. Squeezing in between the tables to reach the bench seat without pulling the table decor with my winter trench was a little struggle however once seated it wasn't a concern to me. Staff was attentive however I am led to believe the motivation behind the attentiveness is to get people in and out as fast as possible (we were handed the bill shortly after we finished our eclairs). While I can appreciate it is due to how busy they are, it did cut our catch up short as we felt we had to leave. Dishes that make up this review: Mocha Bisque benedict with tiger prawns, poached eggs and a lobster bisque hollandaise served on squid ink toast ($20.50) Salted caramel eclairs ($4.50) Yoghurt eclairs ($4.50) Mocha; was well balanced with no fancy latte art to marvel at. Bisque Benedict; I was a little intrigued by the tiger prawns mixed with poached eggs and a lobster bisque hollandaise after seeing it on instagram. The tiger prawns were just cooked (very tasty, great texture), eggs were perfectly runny and the lobster bisque had a bit of a seafood flavour to it but it wasn't strong enough to be able to tell it was a lobster flavour. Eclairs; The eclairs that I've seen so many photos of were beautiful to look at and had a tasty filling but I had expected the eclair to be a little more light and fluffy whereas this eclair was a little heavier than I had anticipated. Nice place for brunch. I'm not coffee person so not sure about coffee but hot chocolate and tea are very nice. Mushroom burger super yummy! Sweet potato chips are crisp outside and supper smooth inside. Love it! If you are tea person try pear blossom. You won't disappoint.

Great new cafe right opposite to the Kettle Black. Tried the blueberry croissant bagel with cream cheese and I love it. Buttery crunch goodness! Can't help but to take home 2 of the displayed pastry.

We were pretty full from our lunch, but upon arriving, our bellies were at once again ready to go! I'm more of a fruit tart type of gal, so I went for the Lemon Tart (6.8). The others had the Brownie & Passionfruit Chocolate Gateau (8.6) and the Hazelnut Millefeuille (8.6). We essentially shared our desserts, so I got to try all three! I loved the Lemon Tart, as it was neither too sweet or sour, and I love tart pastries! Although it's difficult to go wrong with a lemon tart - there definitely wasn't any added or artificial flavor that shouldn't have been there. The Hazelnut Millefeuille was also delicious, as it reminded me of a Ferrero Rocher. It was definitely richer, so it was difficult for me to have too much, but puff pastry always does it for me. The brownie cake was also really delicious, and was a good balance of all the flavors, especially with the layer of passionfruit. They do an afternoon coffee and dessert special for $9 that we should have done, but we didn't see it until after! The place actually reminded me a bit of a petit Le Bon Choix in Brisbane, but definitely with better tasting desserts and better service!

Little cake. Extraordinary flavors…read more A charming little shop located in a quiet alley of Little Collins. Upon walking in, I felt I had entered a high-end cake boutique. On display behind immaculately clean glass were dozens upon dozens of colorful and perfectly delectable French pastries. The Mister Green Tea (what a witty name for a cake) caught my eyes immediately. Absolutely enchanting with perfectly crafted raspberry jam and gold leaf on top of a faint green tea cake, it completely stole my breath away. Upon looking closer, the tiny pastries were made with black sesame sable base and green tea mousse. And as I bit into it, I found the center filled with luscious raspberry cremeux. Everything about it is a testament to perfection and deliciousness! I also got their Matcha Latte, and it was just as sensational as the rest of the desserts. That green tea was light yet rich, slightly bitter to counter the sweetness of the cakes. Beautiful in both presentation and taste! The price may be quite steep for such a small plate of dessert ($9.90) and a cup of latte ($6), but to find a rare gem like this certainly makes up for once in a lifetime experience.

I tried their Hot Chocolate & dessert cake, called "Monte Carlo". It's a Chocolate mousse with cafe creme & chocolate biscuit covered with milk chocolate glaze. The glaze outside was shinny, smooth, and light, which is perfect for me. Texture, creamy, but not too sweet. Dessert was great, and Hot Chocolate too. Located in the city, 5 to 7 minutes away from Flinders Street railway station by train (Melbourne, Victoria). A cute, nice, fancy French bakery/cafe in the city, nothing can be better than spend a free day with your friends/love/family at Laurent. Services and staffs are great! I didn't have to wait for long, they take good order, and give you great recommendations, and ask for your opinions after. Customers will always feel welcomed, and happy when the staffs are always smiling. Overall, great place + dessert! Try it out, if you have a chance, definitely worth it. Love and miss this place.

I've been to France on the odd occasion, and I must say that every time I was in a Parisian bakery I'd think to myself "Wow, this feels a lot like Blackburn." That's not entirely true, but Blackburn and France are joined with a wonderful bakery serving the most delicious french pastries and more. Wit both owners as pastry chefs, you wont find a better place in a good ten kilometres of here. The only problem I've had every time I go it "What to have?" which often leads to "What to have first?" Vanilla slice with delicious flaky pastry. Tarts. Meringues. Eclairs. Cheesecakes. Truffles. The list goes on. For those after a more savoury selection, there is also pasties, quiches and pies. All bits are made fresh daily on the premises, so the best time to come is mid morning for the best selection available. Come any later and you may miss out. The coffee is a wonderful strong addition to the sugary sweetness of the pastries, and all the energy will keep you going until your next meal.
