Apparently there used to be a smokehouse here, but when it was being fixed up in 2015 or 2016, a tree fell on it a few hours after the repairman left for the day. Thank goodness the repairman was not hurt. Many decades ago, before organization(s) took this place over, locals would use this place for the usual of any form of debauchery that you can think of. It was nice to try to meet people and very casual, but I felt out of place. I had attended the Swedish museum's outdoor market and Lucia The Weeknd before, and a volunteer recommended I check the cabin out. I suggest that for special events that you check the cabin out with a friend or a child if you have that option to feel less out of place.

There are so many places that are important to understanding where we came from that some end up becoming obscure, unknown, sometimes demolished in the name of progress. Then there are those that are saved from that fate, usually by passionate historians and community members who lobby to save the place from being destroyed. In the case of the Lazaretto Quarantine Station and Hospital, they succeeded - just barely. It is a success story worthy of a Hallmark special. The Lazaretto Quarantine Station and Hospital was the first of its kind, built and put into service after the Fever of 1793 swept through Philadelphia, killing 25% of the city's residents. This Quarantine station was built by the City of Philadelphia, long before the Federal Government became interested in such matters, because of the devastation of 1793. The Station served as a first point of entry for ships coming from abroad, where passengers were screened for contagious diseases and either held until their health was assured, turned away or let pass. It, along with the more famous Ellis Island, served as a major portal for immigrants coming to the United States for over one hundred years. It ceased being an immigration point in 1895, after which it was used as a port for seaplanes, an athletic club, and for many years after that, an abandoned property. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, which gave it some protection. It was the threat of demolition that saved it, when a group of citizens and historians worked with Tinicum Township and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to restore the property. It is now home to Tinicum Townships' government offices. Walking around the building, still being restored, it's breathtaking. The long porch facing the river is stunning, the rooms all being carefully preserved while being updated with modern conveniences. I love that this has been done and love that it will continue to serve the residents of the Commonwealth, not from infectious disease, but serving as a place where they might get a building permit, enact ordinances, meet on issues concerning their community. Call this one a win for history.

It's at the end of 7th street near Fort Christina Park and it reads: "A black man named Anthony was among the first permanent settlers of New Sweden. He came to the colony from the West Indies in 1639 aboard the Swedish ship Vogel Grip. Records indicate that Black Anthony became a free man named Antoni Swart, an employee of Governor Johan Printz, who cut hay and sailed Printz's sloop during the 1640's and 1650's."

The Marcus Hook Range Rear Light was built in 1918 to guide ships safely along the Delaware River,…read moreespecially through the busy Marcus Hook channel. It is 105 feet tall with a focal height of 278 feet above sea level. This makes it the highest light on the Atlantic coast of the United States. This location on such high ground was chosen for visibility, not convenience. At the time, the area was mostly farmland, and the government paid $2,050 to acquire the land. Over the decades, suburban development crept in, and the lighthouse now stands very oddly in the middle of a residential neighborhood. Originally equipped with a Fourth Order Fresnel lens and a fixed white light, the tower was later automated and converted to a fixed red beacon. Though no longer staffed, it remains an active aid to navigation and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The keeper's house is privately owned, and while the tower itself isn't open to the public, it's still visible from downtown Wilmington and continues to serve its original purpose. You can also drive along the street and photograph as I did. Just remember... private property! Its presence today is a curious blend of maritime legacy and suburban sprawl. It is a working lighthouse rising above rooftops, quietly reminding residents of the river's industrial past. It's one of the few examples of a functioning navigational aid embedded in a neighborhood, offering a glimpse into how infrastructure outlasts the landscapes that grow around it. Fort Christina was the fort established by Swedish settlers who founded the colony of New Sweden in…read more1638. The colonists landed at "The Rocks" at the confluence of the Brandywine and Christina Rivers. In 1655, the Dutch fought the Swedes, which led to the surrender of the fort and the end of official Swedish colonial presence in America. The Dutch renamed the fort (Fort Altena), but the fort eventually fell into disrepair and vanished entirely. The land where the fort had been became part of an industrialized area but was turned into a park in 1938 to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Swedish colonization of the area. The Crown Prince of Sweden gifted a monument to the park, and President Franklin D. Roosevelt, the Crown Prince, and other Swedish royals attended the dedication of the park. There's not much too the park, but it was worth stopping by to see the monument and to see the remnants of "The Rocks," where the Swedes landed when they established New Sweden. Its hours are limited and seasonal (I think because it's opened and staffed by volunteers from the Kalmar Nyckel Foundation), but stop by if you're in the area and it's open!

I had seen signs for the Paoli Battlefield many times as I drove nearby. Finally, I had an…read moreopportunity to explore. It was worth it. The Paoli Battlefield was the site of the Paoli Massacre of 1777. After losing the Battle of the Brandywine, General Washington and his rebel army retreated to protect Philadelphia from the British advance. He left a contingent of soldiers under General Anthony Wayne hidden, they thought. These trips were to disrupt supply lines. Unfortunately, the British learned of this group. They attacked in the dark of night, killing 53 soldiers. One British officer died. His remains along with the dead officers are buried at nearby St Peter's Church of the Great Valley (see my review). The battlefield is now owned by the Borough of Malvern and maintained by them. There are plaques describing the events and a cell phone tour, which was very interesting. My only reason for a star deduction was the condition of some of the plaques, their laminate surfaces so damaged that they were very difficult to read. It's a beautiful, haunting place.
