The Donut Shop & Bakery is a small restaurant that offersa no-frills ambiance, but the true stars here are the insanely friendly service and even more importantly, the food. The restaurant was busy when I got there on an early Wednesday morning, but i got my donuts and was on my way in no time flat. The glazed donuts were amazing as were the kolaches. A couple of weeks ago, I tried the Philly Cheese Steak Burrito. It was excellent. Yesterday I ordered another one but I asked them to drop it in the fryer (like a chimichanga). They were happy to oblige me. The resulting crispy exterior shell made the burrito even better. I highly recommend either version. read more

It might be odd, but I tend to base my experience on not only the product/food/items the location sells but the "vibe" the establishment/environment gives me. From entering the door, the smell of fresh coffee, donuts and a hearty breakfast filled my soul!... and nose. The DOnut Shop (see my photo of the sign out front) is a small place, where you walk and order at the counter, then they bring you your food at your booth/table. I didn't know what to order! Their freshly made donuts were so tempting but after vacationing all week I needed a heartier breakfast to prep for the ride home to St. Louis. I chose the Full Breakfast! ... 2 Eggs (over medium) 3 slices of bacon (thick cuts cooked perfectly crisp with a little "give") hash browns, and one biscuit (THE BEST biscuit I have ever had! Fresh, warm soft, buttery, fluffy heaven that needed no jelly or honey and was the perfect pusher/sopper for my eggs). Y.U.M.!!!!! Another perk was their coffee experience. I love a place that gives you a cup and says go to town! And they serve Community Coffee (Chicory Coffee!) If I needed a refill I didn't need to wait for someone to bring me some, I walked to the counter, filled my cup from their freshly brewed pot, added my goodies in and walked back to my booth. Perfect for me! Another perk was their decor! It was a small establishment but they have it painted with murals and fun sayings and it was super colorful and inviting. Another awesome perk was their coffee news newsletter they had setting on each table. A fun read while waiting for your breakfast to be delivered! Another perk? Yes, this one of a kind place has a drive thru! Awesome. If I am ever near Richland, MS again.... this place is a MUST!!!!! Skip the Waffle House next door and walk straight into The DOnut Shop!!!! ... wait... did I mention we also got some donut holes and blueberry donuts to go? oopsie... This was a place we checked out on the way to Jackson Zoo on the next step on my donut trail. The donuts were alright for a maple glazed and a blueberry cake. We also got a chicken biscuit and there wasn't much flavor to the biscuit and the chicken was bland. But still, I say the donuts were passable if you needed just get some here! read more

I was a regular customer for awhile then stopped going for a couple months. I missed it so I called in my order (the normal order I always used to get). let me say order came up to $21.35 so I gave exact change the atm gave me a counterfeit $20 and they wouldn't accept it (my fault not really but cool) I was shocked but was like whatever this is my spot so I went home got another $20 and recalled my order in (asked if I could get it fresh). Get back and get rung up order is now $22.45. I'm like she still got the $1.35 from the first time I gave you my money and I wasn't going to say anything until y'all went up now I'm paying an extra $2 and some change.. she said I only gave her $20 when clearly I gave her enough to pay for my order the $20 was counterfeit. They say I order a different donut I then restated that I want chocolate with sprinkles she said okay. Get my order it's cold, I ask them to reheat it. They did. I get home and I have the wrong Donuts. I guess the shorter lady was having a bad morning or thought I was trying to get over on the business I'm not sure but I won't be going back for a long time. Look, it's very rare that I leave Jackson and head to the suburbs just for food. What's even rarer is traveling all the way to Richland. The Donut Shop & Bakery might be the only place that could do it for me. I NEED those donuts, y'all. Don't be fooled by its humble exterior. It might not look like anything special, but once you give it a shot, this spot will hold one of the most special places in your heart. (It's whatever part of your heart is directly connected to your stomach, probably.) It's just a little shop off the side of Highway 49. It's not particularly close to anything, but it is worth going out of your way. These are the best donuts in the greater Jackson area. You heard me, Kripsy Kreme. This place is LEGIT. They offer every kind of donut, and they put out fresh ones throughout the morning. Just imagine how good this place smells and then trust me when I tell you-- it's better than that. Don't think it's just donuts though (or doughnuts, if you're fancy). They offer all kinds of breakfasts. You could get a full meal-- eggs, bacon, biscuit. I highly recommend opting for a kolache. It's like every good flavor you can imagine, wrapped in doughy perfection. Everything is cooked and prepared fresh, in-house. No microwaved grits, no reheated biscuits. They serve Community Coffee, which I've always been a fan of. It's a self-serve situation, which is ideal for someone who inhales coffee the way I do. Like I said, the vibe from the outside is unassuming but once you walk in, you'll be charmed. The hand-painted decor is adorable and very Mississippian. There are illustrations on the walls. You can sit at a booth, a table, or at a swivel stool along the bar. You really can't go wrong. If you're looking for a quality breakfast experience, I must insist that you head a bit out of your way, brave the suburban traffic, and make plans at the Donut Shop. They have a full service menu with fried burritos (my hubbie loves these) with homemade sauce as well as pancakes, french toast, biscuits with tomato gravy. They have kolaches in small and large size. All are fabulous! Their doughnuts are yummy! Our favorites are their long-johns or eclairs but their cinnamon rolls and butter rolls(same as cinnamon but without the cinnamon component) are awesome too. Their blueberry cakes and glazed cakes rival anybody's. Filling options include: blueberry, raspberry, apple, custard, icing & lemon. Their doughnuts holes are fabulous. Not sure about the donuts and pastries but the full breakfast was not very good. Great biscuits. Food was served cold. They were not busy. Around 730-800 it got very busy. Folks were only ordering donuts and croissants. I guess you got be a local to know what is good here. Poor service. Not friendly to outsiders.
