Location was great, Greg was friendly and welcoming. Loved the civil war touches, and reading material available to guests. Our room was comfortable, great towels! They could offer small touches like cookies available in the afternoon and asking if guests would like a second helping at breakfast, and leaving coffee out for guests to help themselves. Finally they need to clean the deck on the second floor to make it more appealing for use. All and all it was a lovely, restful and enjoyable experience at this inn and I would love to visit again. read more

I traveled to Gettysburg over Memorial Day weekend and stayed at the Doubleday Inn. This AMAZING bed and breakfast is located directly across from the national battlefield. The proprietors, Greg and Sue, provided a warm welcome and a tour of the property (we arrived before other guests had checked in.) The tour included the perhaps "haunted" Paul room and the remainder of the house that's completely decked out with Civil War memorabilia. Later, we discovered that much of the memorabilia exists because the Rosensteel family played a large role in the area's history! The entire property is a beautiful re-creation of the appropriate historical time, with beautiful wallpaper and antique furniture in every room, incredibly comfortable beds and bedding, and striking quilts. Cozy living, dining, and outdoor seating areas create a great environment where you can meet and chat with other guests, read any one of probably hundreds of available Civil War books, or observe the stunning scenery outside. Throughout our stay, our hosts were friendly and informative, with such amazing stories! Each day's breakfast was delicious (I'm talking to-die-for French toast and fresh strawberries!). I hope that as you read any of the negative reviews of this property (though there are few), you focus on the important criteria, not trivial concerns such as "the water for tea not being hot enough" (it was fine for me) or "Oh no! I can't have food in my room." (No, you're not children, but have you seen the mess some adults make with food? I have!) The Inn is a BEAUTIFUL, welcoming property in a peaceful and very humbling setting. You'll love it here! I did, and I'll definitely be back. The best thing about this in is the location within the park. That is truly why I paid the price. The views are spectacular,, even in the rain. The bedroom we had was just fine, clean and full of Civil War- related items as you'd expect. What the Inn lacks is best described as the difference between a motel and a B and B. Our bathroom was just like a Best Western- level space. Rough white towels, no home- like bath mats, no decorative features, small tub, basic soap etc. I expected a higher quality and more period bathroom, as I've experienced in many other B and Bs. The second drawback was the food. Both days the coffee and hot water were out by the time we arrived, right at the start of breakfast service. The way food was presented reminded me more of Denny's than a cozy BandB. There is seemingly little pride taken in what is served- so we have overcooked bacon and a pretty dry French toast one day and fried eggs and better bacon day two. No courses, no bread (day 2), no fruit except garnish strawberries, no asking what we might like or can't eat. Many people didn't eat eggs so all that was wasted. This is not B and B- level food in my experience. In general, there are not many thoughtful touches. There are no drinks, nor even water except from the bathroom sink using the plastic wrapped Motel 6 cups. There was a small communal fridge for leftovers. There were no snacks nor a special drink time for guests- maybe called the 7th Inning Stretch- no creative themed item on our pillow- maybe cracker jack (lean into the baseball). No warm cookies delivered or a muffin in the afternoon. These are special touches that make it feel like home and I've seen in other places. The weird thing was that someone did come into our room for, ostensibly, cleaning, but only took the trash and moved the towel I used as a bath mat on the floor. Didn't rehang towels or offer new ones. Generally, it just didn't feel like hospitality you'd give people you were happy to have stay with you. I would love to brainstorm ways to make the place the gem that the battlefield deserves. It could be so wonderful! read more

I stayed the October 15th thru the 17th 2020 and it was a great experience. The room was nicely decked out in era pieces and the bed was great to sleep in and rest after going out into the battlefield to explore. The breakfast was real good, but the conversation with other guests is the best part of it. Got to meet a bunch of interesting people, and have great talks with them! And to John from California you were enjoyable to talk with after exploring all day and in the morning. I could not recommend this place more, it's location on the battlefield makes it easy to go out and explore right away without having to drive anywhere. And the owners of the place Greg and Sue run a great B&B and I will be staying there again! And this was my 1st fall trip and the colors were brilliant. read more

I last stayed at the Doubleday Inn in the mid-80's and dreamed of visiting again. I finally did this past week and, although ownership has changed hands, the Doubleday experience is as friendly, comfortable and charming as I remember. The location is unparalleled for a student of the battle and Greg, the owner, is as eager to answer questions as he is to provide a fantastic room and breakfast. At first, it was kinda annoying, & overwhelmed @ all the information when we got inside, that we just want to get in our room and RELAX or in my case, PEE! If you know what I mean? I can understand, that part, because I'm a vendor and when someone approaches my booth, I give them too much info, bit by bit forgetting to breath . . . . then they walk away, or stay & buy. That was what it was like entering the room. LOL The room we were in, was big, the bathroom was bright, I have a settee, and a window, big enough to add another bed! There's only room for one comfy chair in the bedroom, so I let my husband keep that room to 'himself'. He likes the soft comfy chair anyway! The room was facing the Battlefield, and the 'ghost' house across the street. But don't let that spook you, like it did me, after my husband gave me the 'history' to read about the farm we're staying in. The breakfast was delicious! Hey, what can I say? We're in the middle of the Battlefield, that happened in 1863. And it's all right there in front of our noses! It took about 3 mins. to drive back to town, and you can see the Gettysburg College from the back porch. I can't find anything negative about this place. Oh, wait there is! The walls are 'paper-thin', I could hear the guy next door breathing in his sleep. And my husband & I have to whisper, we tend to talk LOUD always! I'm sure, they'd be writing about hearing loud footsteps downstairs, from us, because he tends to have BANGING footsteps as he walks. Remember: this is a house, not a hotel, B&B are all like that! I visited the room Bob Hope stayed, and it was a little bigger than my bathroom! I didn't even take photos. I wanted to! Note: I heard Dolores & Bob had separate rooms. After leaving many messages and emails about possibly booking a room for Saturday night that went unanswered and unreturned we reluctantly booked a room anyway online. We were glad that we did!! Staying right across the street from the battlefield was dramatically interesting. We got spine-tingling pictures at sunset of monuments and the battlefield. It was a definite once in a lifetime experience and we will go back and stay in a different room for a different experience next time. read more

The Doubleday Inn is located ON the battlefield in the area of the first day of battle. They are located right outside of town which makes for a quiet and relaxing stay. The sunset view is great but the sunrise is my favorite. I wake up early each stay just to watch the sun rise over the hill in the background. The grounds are well kept and there is a lovely garden in the back. Truly ideal to throw down a blanket and enjoy a picnic on the battlefield. There are chairs in the backyard to relax with a book. A side porch with more seating. Also a 2nd story deck with tables and chairs. Grab a bottle of wine and enjoy the view. Or grab a book to rewind down from a busy day. The Inn is decorated wonderfully. Great artworks depicting the War, a cozy couch to sit upon. Love staying during the colder months when they have the fireplace going. The dining area is setup beautifully. They provide wine glasses and everything else you might need. There is also a small fridge for our use. I've kept a few bottles of beers in there and the other guests were respectful of my items. I love the snacks they set out during the day. Usually some sort of homemade cookies along with a variety of tea packets and hot chocolate. You truly feel special the way the Inn Keepers provide you with everything you need to feel right at home. And the breakfast. Boy do they treat you well with a fresh made delicious breakfast that is filling. I've stayed at a few B&B and their breakfast is my favorite. They will accommodate your food needs with pleasure. I also love sitting at the table with the other guests for a morning talk over breakfast. Everyone who stays there are the friendliest people I've met. The nighttime are quiet hours and everyone respects that. There are no TVs in the Inn. Plus, who needs one when you are visiting such a historical site? The rooms are prepared and decorated with care. You are free to roam around to check out the others so long that they are empty. I've stayed in four different rooms so far. My goal is to stay in each one. I will not go into detail the rooms-- all that info can be found on their professional and informative website. The prices are competitive with the area and not a wallet breaker. If you are visiting Gettysburg this is the place to stay. Christine and Todd run a superb B&B. They are sweet, caring, and professional. If you have any questions about the area don't hesitate to ask. Christine is a town guide as well and Todd is pretty much an encyclopedia about the battle. Oh, on Wednesdays and Saturdays they have a guest speaker come in for a talk about the battle. Such a great time to sit around and ask questions about the battle. Last but not least is Molly, the Inn's golden retriever. They like to joke that everyone comes to see Molly. She is a wonderful dog. Grab a tennis ball and throw it around for her in the backyard. Really nice, clean welcoming place to stay. Todd and Christine know their business and how to keep their guests happy. The prices are about as expected, and the breakfasts were well prepared. I contacted Todd ahead of time to arrange for the Bell-Jefferson room. It has a queen sized bed in a good sized room. The bathroom had a claw-footed tub that has been around for a few years- in a good way. The room came with a guidebook of the battlefield along with a CD-Rom that could be taken with you as you toured the field. We also made arrangements for our friends to stay in the next room- the Robert E Lee room. They were also very comfortable in their similar room. Todd also made arrangements for a licensed guide for our tour of the battlefield- his recommendation was perfect for us- Rich Kohrs. I highly recommend his services. Breakfast both mornings was available a couple of minutes before the 8:00 scheduled time. We needed to drive over to Philly the 2nd day and appreciated the effort in that regard. We will definitely be trying to stay at Doubleday again. The only thing we missed was the dog that they advertise on their website. They had to put him down a month or so before, and you could tell they were still in mourning. read more

Todd was so nice! We checked in with him on a Friday and he made us feel so welcome and at home, and gave us a map and guides to local restaurants and the battlefield. We met Christine the next day as she was out of town when we checked in and she was equally welcoming and friendly. Did I mention the Inn is ON the battlefield? It doesn't get much cooler than that. They have an audio tour which you can borrow, but we were only staying overnight so it wasn't really in our schedule, since it is a really long tour. I had not been in a bed and breakfast before and it was a very welcoming and highly enjoyable atmosphere. The bed was fantastically comfortable, it was hard to get up for breakfast! By the way the breakfast was AMAZING, all the reviews about it are true. Not to mention Todd makes the meanest plate of cookies you will ever have in your entire life. You can't get much closer to the battlefield than the Doubleday Inn. It's right on the battlefield and has some amazing views. It has a lovely living room and dining room as well as a relaxing back patio. We stayed in the Robert E. Lee suite. Very comfortable and roomy. Beware, the bathtub is quite high so if you're not tall you'll want to hold on to something when you step in. If you're thinking about staying in Gettysburg, do not overlook bed and breakfasts. This one is priced competitively with the chain hotels and it's located right on the battlefield. It's quiet and I wasn't annoyed by other guests. Great customer service. Breakfast was amazing. The web site is very professional also. This is a great place to stay if you like dogs! I do not eat bacon and the hosts prepared a breakfast sans bacon for me. My husband loved the egg dish that included bacon. Everything at breakfast was labeled and simple to find. read more

It has literally been a decade since i stayed here. I am so happy to see the Todd and Christine are still running the Inn. My memory of them is still warm and fresh in my mind. My trip and stay here was all that one can ever want. Great food, cozy bedroom, all the feel of still being "there" with the park literally out the front door. I highly recommend this place. I like it better than the b&b's in town as it is just far enough out from the main town that you do not get the same traffic at night and it is much quieter and more peaceful. There are quiet hours (night) and no tvs. Lots of outside places to read and picnic. Great views. Right on the battlefield. My wife and I visited Gettysburg last week and really enjoyed our visit. We arrived late (9:00 pm roughly) and found the inn to be inviting and well maintained. We were with my wife's parents and stayed for four nights. My wife and I stayed in the Devin room and were quite pleased with the accommodations. Todd and Christine (and Cooper) were great. They are very friendly and helpful, and provided all sorts of tidbits about Gettysburg history and the area. The fact that you can walk out on to the battlefield with a mug of coffee in the morning - or evening - for a stroll is just awesome. Breakfast was excellent each day. The house is warm and inviting and not stuffy. Conversation was a mainstay at breakfast and a source of really good information. Todd and Christine were attentive but not oppressive. We were able to sit on the porch and enjoy a glass of wine / cognac in the evenings without interruption while enjoying conversation in our small group. If you're looking for peaceful quiet place while in G-burg, this is a perfect location to reflect on the history of our nation. Absolutely loved the experience and look forward to the day we bring our children along for a stay. I cannot think of a better place to stay - nor a better host/hostess to stay with while in Gettysburg. Todd and Christine are underrated as innkeepers. Cooper is great as well! We live down the road, but have stayed here when we have had power outages or want to go stay and ay with the grandkids. We get the suite that has a living room, coffee station/fridge/microwave. They have a nice pool, cozy fireplace and a decent breakfast bar in the morning. Ive not noticed any issues with cleanliness, service or noise. I usually pay attention to those things unless Im traveling, exhausted and just need to crash and go.. read more

This place is a true gem. I cannot recommend it highly enough. This was our first visit to Gettysburg and I could not wait to stay here...and my husband and I were NOT disappointed. Todd and Christine were so wonderful and gave us great insider tips and recommendations. We would not have had the same amazing experience without them. Our room was VERY comfortable, spotlessly clean, and overlooked the battlefield. Some other highlights: It's ON the battlefield. Beautiful views. Amaaazing homemade breakfasts. Hearty yet refined & served on china. You get a copy of the auto tour to use with your stay. Wonderful conversation during and after breakfast with other guests and our wonderful hosts helped us process and better understand certain parts of the battle, which was an integral part of the experience for me. What a charming and beautiful little inn. Tucked on the battlefield itself, it really is a wonderful place to stay. Todd and Christine and very nice and helpful and Cooper was the best when it came to greeting and loving (Cooper is their dog). They had all the answers to our questions, helping my friend and I set up a great battlefield tour and showing us around the area. Known for being haunted, it's a fun little addition to your stay. As good as it gets is the perfect description! Have visited Gettysburg many times before and stayed in other B&B's but this time I booked early and was able to get a spot at the Doubleday. It is the only lodging that is directly on the Battlefield at Gettysburg. This location is SO superior to downtown, which is crowded and noisy year round. Plus no hassle parking and no steps, made it very easy to load and unload. Incredible views in every direction and a two minute drive to town and all the shops, restaurants, etc. made this the perfect "home base" for us. Very friendly and laid back innkeepers Todd & Christine who make you feel at ease and at home right from the start. Their knowledge of all the Battle and local history is formidable, and they willingly share off-the-beaten-path suggestions which is fun for history buffs like myself and my wife. Every detail has been well though out in this vintage home, you have only to think of something you need and you turn and there it is. Loved the WiFi so I could keep in touch with work, and NO TELEVISIONS which was perfect...allowed us to really enjoy each other and the environment. Could not hear a pin drop despite the house being totally full both nights we were there. Homemade cookies and tea each afternoon hit the spot! Delicious country breakfast served right at the table (no pain in the butt buffets!) and excellent, strong coffee. Friendly crowd of fellow guests who were fun to talk to. In short, I will never stay elsewhere when visiting my favorite historic town. Book early though, they fill up at least two months in advance. It was worth the wait for us! read more

I visit Gettysburg fairly often and will stay nowhere else. The Doubleday Inn's innkeepers are just genuine, fine folks. Every room is lovely. Beds are great. Breakfasts are fabulous and hold one over well for a day of exploring Gettysburg. Staying here really is "As Good As It Gets." If you're "new" to Gettysburg make sure you talk with Christine and Todd (innkeepers). They are so knowledgeable about all aspects of Gettysburg that it's better to talk with them about possible places to see, things to do, places to eat than Googling for information. What repeatedly calls me back to the Doubleday Inn? Warm hospitality, great accommodations, talks provided at the inn, incredible location and that sense of safety and calm ones feels in their home. My wife and I stayed two nights at the Inn and it was a great stay. The owners were awesome; friendly and very welcoming. They made us feel right at home and they were easy to talk to regarding what to see, what to do and just just general conversation about their lives. The breakfast each morning was top quality, especially the french toast. As an added bonus, they provided fresh cookies each night and coffee. We will defiantly be back for another visit. read more

This is the first bad review I've ever written. It is not written in anger but, as a traveler, I feel it is my responsibility to comment on either very good or very bad experiences. I left Philadelphia on a road trip with my wife and daughter on Monday, June 2, 2015. We made a last minute decision to visit Gettysburg. We had no reservations and it was raining very hard. We looked up places to stay online and thought the Doubleday Inn looked interesting as it was located (on the battlefield). The website showed rooms accommodating 2 and 3 people and it suggested making reservations online; but it also suggested calling for reservations before June 2 which I assumed meant June 1. I called and got an answering machine, and, since it was raining hard and a Monday, we decided to drive over on the hope that rooms would be available. We arrived at 9 pm and it was still raining hard. 9 pm is late in the day, but not that late for a B & B. One of the guests opened the door after I rang a few times. He told me that he did not know where the owner was and that he was the only guest at the inn. I looked at the board and there were room keys hanging for all except one or two rooms. The guest suggested that I ring the bell on the desk and I did so a few times. As I was about to leave, someone came out of a door and said in a rude manner, " Who are you and who let you in?" When I pointed to the guest and explained that he was kind enough to let me in from the rain, he gave his guest a dirty look and asked me "What do you want?" I said I was inquiring about a room and he asked again in a rude voice if it was for one or more nights. When I said that it was for one night for three people, he said "It's not going to work" and turned around. I looked at the board with the room keys and asked again if he had a room and he said "No" and walked out. No sorry, no explanation, and no suggestions for other places to stay in the area. We wound up staying in a very nice motel nearby, the Hilton Garden Inn, and enjoyed our visit to Gettysburg. As it turns out, pretty much the whole area around town is hallowed ground and part of the battlefield. The next day, I called the Doubleday Inn and left a message expressing my disappointment in my treatment. I said that, as an inn owner, his behavior was despicable and that he should not be in the hospitality business. He called me back and left a message on my phone saying that: 1. I had insulted his business 2. I had disregarded the "no vacancy" sign (there was none, and even if there was, it was not lit.) 3. He had had problems with a guest that night and that he later had to pick him up at the airport. 4. He did have rooms available that night, but could not accommodate us (which contradicts the "no vacancy" sign statement) 5. I should always make reservations in advance when I travel. 6. He had no remorse about his behavior and in fact, had slept very well that night. We have traveled all over the U.S. and the world on both spontaneous and pre-planned trips and I have never had an experience like this. I understand that B&B's are less accessible that hotels and motels and that, as a business owner, he has the right to refuse to give me a room without reason. But the least I would expect from an inn keeper is common courtesy such as "Sorry, I can't help you tonight, but here are some suggestions for where to stay", particularly when addressing a traveler coming in from the pouring rain. By the way, we subsequently went on to stay at other B&B's on the same trip without prior reservations and we had great experiences. read more

This was our second stay here and I cannot say enough about it. We stayed there shortly after Christine and Todd had bought the Inn - and they have kept all the good things they were doing back then and just improved on them! Of course, they always say "location, location, location" and that truly applies here. IF you can manage to roll out of bed early in the morning - take a walk - you are right on the battlefield. The rooms are lovely and comfortable - the food great - Charlie is wonderful as always - and this time we met Ralph the tour guide who we enjoyed thoroughly in our personal tour. I hate to recommend a place because I dont want to be blocked out of a place because it gets too popular - but there is no way NOT to brag about this place! read more
