Then again, I'm sure I'll be down this way again in the not too distant future. Yeah, as I mentioned, it is a pretty cool park, and it has some nice facilities as well, though the playground isn't as big as some that I've seen. Still, it's worth spending time here.

In fact, it is quite surprising to find such a lovely place in an outer suburb, but here it is. There are plenty of viewing areas above the beach in the dunes of the nesting areas where you can see them up close. We were lucky as there were also molting penguins - lose all their feathers and star over in addition to those nesting.

We started in the info center to review the displays and educated ourselves about koalas. They have an elevated boardwalk which allows you to be 'in the trees' with the koalas. Their koalas are rescued from various situations and while they are free to come and go, they seem to stay because they have a great gig. We saw koalas sleeping, eating, walking, climbing,... given they sleep 20 hours of the day, I was so excited that we saw them so active. They had a wonderful volunteer that ensured the visitors stayed a safe distance from the koalas but also helped us learn more about these super cute animals. We also walked the nature trail and saw a ton of birds and several wallabies. The gift shop had several great options and we bought a cute book for our granddaughter. Great stop.

Learned a lot here, all the money raised goes into research, environment and educational programs. Staff is super invested and wants to be here helping these super cool animals. Walking on the pathway looking for these adorable koalas was a lot of fun. They were east to spot, but majority of the time they were sleeping or moving at their slow pace enjoying life. They are well taken care of here.

Actually, it started raining rather heavily, but fortunately there were some shelters in the garden where I could wait for the rain to subside, which it eventually did. Yeah, these gardens were pretty cool, and in addition to the rose bushes (and there certainly was a lot of them), there were also some interesting, and somewhat modern, sculptures here as well. Merricks Beach certainly isn't the place to come and ride waves. There's rockpools to poke around in and plenty of shells to be collected. Beyond a small toilet block closer to the road, there aren't any facilities here so BYO everything if you plan to make a day of it. For dog owners: In summer during daylight savings, dogs aren't allowed on the beach between 9am and 7pm, but all other times are okay for you to bring your pup down here to run around.
