Things Aussies do well: Combine colonial era British things with quality ingredients and modern effortless style. This brew pub does these things well with food, beer, and ambiance. Although located next to tourist central with cruise ship crowds, this place was legitimately good! Food: 5/5. Excellent burger and chips (fries)! It was juicy and about a 1/3 lb, and very flavorful. It had tomato, cheese, onion and beets (!) for a nice sweet chewy contrast to the savory ingredients. The double burger (with 2 fried chicken wings) was intriguing but we weren't monstrously hungry. Beer: 4/5. Only had the IPA but it was crisp, piney, and a little funky just as the Australian hops should be. Would love to come back and try a flight. They have rotating taps for dark beer and hazy ipa too. Ambiance: 5/5. I LOVE the decor and vibes. They had wooden furniture and green Leather seats, and lots of Nautical and British colonial decor. It made you feel like a sailor on shore leave in the best possible way: full of hope, curiosity and a thirst for beer. Price: 4/5. A tax on the higher side, but you get quality food and drinks and a cozy Atmosphere. Because it is based in The Rocks area, a slight up charge is expected. Highly recommend this place!

One of the BEST burgers I've ever had in my life was the Oz Burger at The Tap Room. I was a bit apprehensive because we do not eat beets or "beetroot" on our cheeseburgers in the states but I was willing to give it a try and I can see why so many Aussie's love it. This bar is aesthetically pleasing, there are so many great rooms and quiet spots to sit. We came in for an early lunch and had the place to ourselves. You order at the bar, provide your table number and they will hand you your drinks and then bring the food to your table once ready. I wasn't planning on drinking since we had to drive back to Newcastle so I can't comment on the brews but if you're a coke person, please note they have Pepsi products only.

Cute tiny bar in the Rocks area that I just happened to wonder into. I went with a sample paddle of 4 beers for $15. Brightside lager light flowery beer Hoppy days xpa good taste Rockstar Pale Ale refreshing light beer Stacker IPA my favorite of the group, flavorful and bold Only a few tables but their great for sharing.

This is another little bar that I discovered tucked away in the Rocks. In fact, a part of me thought that I had literally visited every single pub here, that is until I discovered this place as I was making my way around the area one Sunday morning. Unfortunately it was closed, but it gave me a huge incentive to come back, and honestly, I am really glad I did because not only was this place magnificent, but they had some pretty awesome beers on tap as well.

Great location but nothing great about this place. Beer was good and better than other places we had been. They had a good IPA. My fizz was super sugary though and didn't seem to have a ton of alcohol. Food was decent. Did a kangaroo sausage, Brussels and the chicken wings. All good but nothing special. No happy hour on weekends. Staff was extremely nice and kind.

Very much enjoyed! Great selection of food and their own homemade brews. Excellent location in The Rocks with views of the weekend street market. Lovely attentive service. Probably a historic house or hotel, charmingly choppy with tiny interesting rooms, bar and a nice patio. The old bay fried chicken sandwich was amazing, and the barley pumpkin/squash(?) salad was a delightfully filling healthy option.

Amazing. The beer is great (for those who like not bitter beer should try number 2), also the chips and the wings. You must take a break if you are walking through The rocks and drink a beer here with some snacks!

One downside to Yelp is the 5 star scale makes it hard to capture nuance. This place deserves 4.75 stars maybe more, but not quite 5. The flight of beers I tasted was great, though the Pilsner was a little sweet, not surprising from a place focused on 2x IPAs, Porters and Stouts, all of which were excellent. Mrs B got grilled Haloumi with a mint, pea hummus garnished with young pistachios. I got an appetizer dinner of Smoked Wings and Fried Pickles. Everything was tasty, no denying the flavor. The hummus was original and artful. Improves: Just expect folks to want Pita for the Hummus, just a few segments. Second as a North Cackalackan, I appreciated the flavor of the pickles, especially the spicy sauce, but using kosher spears while getting points for originality, made the batter fall off (try cutting the spears into segments), finally the smoked Wings, delicious, but a bigger wing would be juicier and more flavorful chef, just saying. A+, but not quite a 5.

They are hot off the mark and good for a chat if that's what you're into. A decent range on tape. One thing I tried and fell in love with was alcoholic ginger beer. It's as sweet as it's non-alcoholic brethren but after a few of them you'll begin to feel it. The restaurant part was surprisingly amazing. The food would come up from a basement kitchen. It had the FOUR Fs - Fast, Fresh and Full of Flavour. A great selection of fried seafoods and a creamy goat curry to die for. Our host was on top of everything. If you dropped a chopstick he'd be there with a clean one before you picked the dropped one off of the floor. While your surrounds aren't authenticly Vietnamese, the food was the closest thing I've had since visiting Vietnam. While I try and avoid tacky looking Asian restaurants, eating authentic Vietnamese in a pub/TAB was just a little weird and a bit too far removed. I'd definitely be back though.

There's not a great deal to like here. Where Cheers has character, they seem to have gone out of their way here to *not* have it. I literally visited the Haymarket once with a co-worker to have the $12 steak and beer lunchtime special (it's all day everyday which alone is worthy of a star and gets it out of 1 territory), and I never came back. Whilst the price is in the sweet spot, the steak is definitely the lower end of the spectrum and if you choose medium rare, expect to get medium to well. The beer tasted like how beer tastes when lines aren't clean, and you twist your neck and make that funny face as the "not quite right" flavour hits your tastebuds. The staff are too familiar and entitled, which makes things worse because it means the lazy service is ingrained in their psyche - there's no manager training them out of their bad habits. They act like they are doing you a favour, rather than their job, which is arguably the most annoying trait to be found in hospitality staff. Places like this are the reason I am glad we don't have a tipping culture, and why I almost never tip at a bar, even 10 cents. Your job is to pour beer and clean tables, if you do one badly and the other not at all, and you get paid $20-25/hour, why am I tipping you? You should be getting paid $10/hour and working your ass off to earn the tips to make up that extra $10-15/hour. When you don't finish your beer, and don't order another one, it's pretty clear that you didn't enjoy yourself. Lots of work to do double H. Lots of work. Train those staff... ASAP.

There's a pretty good mix of people in the street-level bar, and PJs have converted it into more of a sports bar so there are plenty of screens for the sports nuts to check out their favourite teams prospects. PJs typically have pretty good fare. In winter they have two absolute cracking dishes. The Guiness Pie with mushy peas, and their signature lamb shanks which is totally unctuous. Why such a modest score? Price kills the place. It's not one of the cheaper places to get a beer as someone incorrectly states in their tips, it's easily one of the most expensive places to get a beer. You're paying over the top prices for domestic tap beer. A cheap beer is $5 for a Coopers Pale Ale, which you can get on the same street about 200m up the road... Also... As much as I enjoy a good pokie section, this one ain't good. And by that I mean the clientelle. It brings in the undesireable types, and sours what is otherwise a sweet pub. It doesn't feel snug, it feels stuffy and claustrophobic - and the bar has never been manned when I've been down there. Now, if they moved the pokies to the snug, and then opened up the entire bar at the street-level to include the room vacated by the pokie section, you'd have something.
