    Menu 17/2/20

Went on 17/2/20 for dinner at 5:20 PM as Spitalfields Market was closed 3 hours ahead of schedule. Place is noticably very old and I enjoyed admiring the architecture while seated and waiting for our meal to come from the dumbwaiter. Unfortunately, our waiter had really horrible breath so we tried to avoid him coming to our table to talk. First time I've ever smelled a waiter's breath while seated in my life. My husband and I ordered a bottle of water which was unfortunately £4 ($5.18) - honestly, the exorbitant prices on water in restaurants in Europe is the one thing I really hate about travelling to Europe. It feels like highway robbery. I ordered the baked goats' cheese, kale, walnut and beetroot salad £9 ($11.64.) I very much enjoyed this warm salad but felt the portion size did not live up to its price tag. This is a pub, not a fine dining establishment, so I expect portions to be a bit more filling. Each of us ordered the special, the steak and ale pie with mash for £16.50 each ($21.35) The taste was great but my husband said he was still hungry afterwards. Frankly, I think £46 ($59.52) for this meal before service fees / tip is just too pricey for 2 pot pies, mash potatoes, 1 salad and water. The taste is good but the value for money isn't there.

I loved the inside of this pub. Super cute and cozy, with friendly service and pretty good food. We came for breakfast and had the eggs with smoked salmon and the French toast. They also served a pretty decent flat white. Everything was reasonably priced as well. We came around 9:30 AM on a Saturday morning and it was not too crowded yet. Would definitely come back.

    Bartender-recommended stout

Thank goodness they're open later. We needed to grab dinner after leaving the Dennis Sever House, and knew that if we hopped on the underground to head back towards our hotel, we'd not be able to find a place open that late. The bartender was very friendly, and recommended a stout for me to try, which I appreciate. He said it'd be better than Guinness, and laughed when I gasped at the audacity. The beer was good, I'll give him that, but better than that Irish stout? I don't think so. We were both pretty famished by this point, so we went with a starter and an entree each. I ordered the soup of the day (which I was told was a roasted carrot, but which tasted very potato-y), and my husband tried the devilled whitebait. For our mains, I ordered the mussels and my husband ordered the pie of the day, which was steak and kidney. The soup - definitely not carrot - had really good flavor. It was served with a thick slice of bread and was warm and tasty. The mussels were perfectly cooked and definitely filling. The chips could've been a bit more crispy, but were still a nice side. My husband and I honestly didn't know that "devilled" means something different in London than it does in the States. When they brought his plate of devilled whitebait out, I immediately knew he wouldn't be a fan. I'll give him credit for giving it a go, but he didn't eat much. Same thing goes for his pie. He's not really a fan of gizzards, and he commented that the iron-y taste of the kidney was pretty strong, but he did end up enjoying the pie and got his fill on that. The bartender did stop by a couple of times to make sure we were doing okay, even though we had a waitress who was taking really good care of us. He stopped to chat and make sure I was happy with the beer, and to check if I was interested in trying another of his recommendations (which of course, I was.) This was a great random find in a neighborhood that was new to us. Had we been in the area again later in our trip, we definitely would've stopped in again.

Quintessential English Restaurant, both in name and decor, inside and out. Great ambiance and attentive service, but surprise! The menu is not just your typical English staples. Sure, there's fish and chips, but there are also small plates and palpably fresh seafood. I don't know where they get their oysters, but they're among the biggest I've ever seen. A grilled octopus dish with chili and lime was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The classic F&C was a huge portion, and just the right level of crispiness. Everything we had was very well done, recommend a stop if in the area looking for a meal.

I love it her. This place has so much history and it is a place to go. The sourdough sandwich is just so perfect. I love it so much. It tastes sublime. This place is totally recommended for you guys to try at east end and would come back again to try its other menu.

We stopped into this quite British Restaurant/Bar as part of an East End food walking tour. We tried the bread pudding and got to look around at the restaurant. This is a really cool spot and very original. Inside is full of wood, pews and booths. Its adorable, quiet, and a dining experience that's unique and provides some privacy will getting that real English Establishment feel. The bread pudding was absolutely delicious. Decadent, rich, creamy and gooey. You can't ask for anything more from a bread pudding, and this filled my quota of cream and butter for weeks (but it was worth it). I cant vouch for the food but the dessert and atmosphere made this a fun stop!

Fantastic little bar/pub in ab great location which is only an stone throw away from Liverpool streetn station. My favorite thing about this place is the great selection of Belgian beers they have both on tap and in bottles. The Bruge Zot is for anyone been on the Half Moon brewery tour in Bruge should be a familiar beer and being able to drink that in London is enough to take a trip here.

It's a small bar restaurant that's not really attractive when Walking pass. However, the staffs here are warm and friendly. The bar is a bit crowded but the restaurant is fairly quiet. The food is okay - the duck breast is well cooked. For the desert I order the signature pudding but is a bit disappointed - unlike the cute cup shown in the comments, I have a pudding bathing in a plate of dressing which tastes like condensed milk and overall it's too sweet and lacked of layer. But the overall experience is fine for me.

I am not a coffee drinker, I never have been and I doubt this will ever change. Even though I worked in a coffee shop for three years and can apparently make quite the cappuccino, I struggle to drink more than a mouthful of the stuff before my face screws up and the gag reflex kicks in. Charming I think you'll agree. In spite of this however, I spent the majority of my university days sitting in coffee shops with friends pretending to study. What was I to do if I was going to fit in? How would I achieve acceptance from the cool kids if I wasn't knocking back espresso's and discussing bean blends? It was during these dark days that I discovered my love for all things tea related. The Market Coffee House makes the perfect cup of tea. With upwards of 15 different varieties, this is proper tea as God intended. Firstly the pot arrives, leaves swimming at the bottom. Then the waiter presents you with your strainer and milk and the challenge begins to brew and dilute until you achieve the perfect colour of brown. Delicious! Thankfully The Market Coffee House doesn't stop there and offers a great selection of cakes and biscuits to accompany this brew. Sitting at one of the shops mismatched wooden tables felt so homely that I couldn't resist dunking my sophisticated dark chocolate and almond biscuit into the tea. Maybe this wasn't what the maker had intended for this beautiful creation but take it from me, it's a marriage made in heaven. Oh and I hear they make coffee too...

Charming little restaurant that we had brunch at when we were staying near Liverpool station. The decor is very charming and the food was pretty good including the cappuccino.

A friend and myself just randomly discovered this place as we felt like a quick coffee and bite. We have been back frequently ever since. It's very small, with long wooden floor boards, and a mish-mash of wooden chairs. I love the fact that you can get a simple slice of toast, or a crumpet. Their daily fresh soups with bread and butter are always hearty and the range of cakes from the Artisan bakery are to salivate over. Also a very good place to wind down for a cup of coffee or a pot of one of their freshly brewed leaf teas.

    Derry N.

Whenever friends and family visit, they generally come via the Stansted Express. And what better to refresh the weary traveller than a nice pot of tea and a creamy, jammy scone or two? Luckily one of the best cream teas in London can be had here in the heart of Spitalfields, only a skip and a jump away from Liverpool Street station, where the Stansted trains and buses arrive. I dock the Market Coffee House a couple of stars for being slightly more expensive than it should be, for employing slightly unfriendly staff and for being too damn popular - I can hardly ever get a table at the first time of asking!

    Amy M.

This is a brilliant coffee house just on the edge of Spitalfields market. They serve a really great coffee and i love the warm, snug, homely feel the place has with its wooden furniture. It's a perfect place to retreat to after a trek around Spitalfields market. The staff here are friendly and heIpful even when it gets busy on a Sunday lunch time. I love relaxing here with an English crumpet and honey watching the world go by.

However, it was a whopping 93 GBP for 600g, which is meant to share between 2 people, but still not that much (refer to my pic). This is simply just too high of a price for this. Bone marrow and onions (12 GBP) - This was surprisingly good. Although the marrow itself didn't have much of a flavor, it was a nice buttery consistency to spread on the bread. The onions were cooked very well. Sticky Toffee Pudding (9.50 GBP) - This was more of a bread like dessert than a pudding, but was tasty and not overly sweet despite the toffee (which is good). The staff are very friendly, helpful, and attentive. The service speed is pretty quick. The interior is decorated in a nice yet not too pretentious steakhouse style. There were still plenty of open tables available on a Sunday night. Overall, while the steak and food are very good, the steak is simply too overpriced to justify me getting it again. Maybe worth trying once but not twice. I would potentially come back for the other menu options though.

Unfortunately, our experience was soured before it even had a chance to begin. My girlfriend and I walked in excited, completely amicable, simply hoping to head upstairs for a bite and drinks. We were greeted by the doorman with an immediate, dismissive "Are you good?" -- not in a welcoming or helpful tone, but in a way that felt skeptical and unnecessarily confrontational. There was no warmth, no "welcome in," no attempt at hospitality. It immediately set an uncomfortable tone. He then proceeded to call upstairs as though he were doing us some sort of favor just by allowing us to go up. The entire interaction felt transactional and judgmental rather than gracious. First impressions matter, especially at a place that positions itself as a premium dining destination. Hospitality begins at the door, not at the table. When we finally made it upstairs, the room was filled with visibly drunk, rowdy groups -- which only made the earlier attitude feel even more misplaced. If that environment is acceptable (and profitable), then two polite guests looking for drinks and food shouldn't be met with suspicion at the entrance. By that point, the damage was done. The initial interaction had already rubbed us the wrong way, and the energy upstairs didn't help. We ultimately decided to leave before even sitting at our table. That's how strongly the first impression impacted us. It's difficult to justify staying somewhere when you don't feel genuinely welcomed from the outset. Duck & Waffle has the potential to be memorable for all the right reasons. But someone representing the brand at the very front needs to understand that hospitality isn't optional -- it's foundational. A simple, respectful welcome would have changed everything. I hope management takes this seriously, because no guest should feel judged or dismissed before they even step inside.

I just have to say in general, everyone at this hotel and pub are just extraordinarily friendly and helpful. I'm not that familiar with pub culture and apparently the way it works is that you have to go up to the bar to order your food. I asked the hostess about it and she said that if we want a waitress there is an added service charge. We were on three walking tours that day and we're exhausted so I didn't care about paying the service charge. We started off with Yorkshire, puddings and gravy. I'm from the US. I don't usually get to have a Yorkshire pudding so I wanted to try it. It's kind of like a popover with gravy. The Yorkshire pudding was okay but the gravy was delicious. I saved the gravy and used it for the next part of my meal. We both had fish and chips. Unlike the US when I ask for malt vinegar, they know what it was and had it right away. I can't tell you how often in the US I'm giving red vinegar. The the fish and chips were spectacular. The fish was crispy even after sprinkling on the vinegar. The fries were very nice. Not as good as blacklock but very nice. And I am fry snob. My wife ordered sticky toffee pudding for dessert. I couldn't even finish my fries, so I passed. Overall a very nice meal and perfect for us as we were exhausted from walking all day and only had to go upstairs to our room afterwards.

the poor rating has to do with the rude staff at this location. i'm not sure if he was the owner or…read morea staff member, but there was an older man who was very rude to us when we arrived. we entered the establishment, as that is what you typically do when you want to dine at a restaurant, and he came up the stairs and didn't even offer a greeting. i mentioned that we had a reservation for that time and he immediately just kept repeating that our table was outside. we went outside to their small patio dining area, and saw that there was a table with a "reserved" sign on it, so we sat down. i thought it was incredibly rude that he spoke to us in that manner, and it seemed like he expected us to somehow know that that table was ours before we had even spoken to any staff. i was seriously considering getting up and leaving but i decided to give this place one more chance. it then took a while, but we were eventually served by a much more pleasant and friendly younger server, who helped make this experience better. i would give this place a lower rating, however i must admit that the food was delicious. as an american tentatively wanting to try british bangers and mash, this exceeded my expectations. we all spoke about how the sausage was plump, snappy, and delicious, definitely one of the best we've ever had. the mashed potatoes were also amazing- cheesy and heavenly, and i'm not even usually a mashed potatoes kinda person. i am glad that we stayed solely for the delicious food, but i would not come back because of our experience with the staff here. the place already was one of the emptier spots on this very busy soho street anyway.
