Outstanding pies. The venison whiskey relish pie, oh my. If there is a line, it's well worth the wait!

We stopped in to this cafe during a road trip for the day from Christchurch. It was during the…read moreChristmas holidays, so possibly the only cafe open. Our experience was good - we first opted to sit outside, in the lovely garden, but the weather was too breezy so we moved indoors. My companion chose Seafood Chowder and I had Poached Eggs with spinach, mushroom and tomato. Although the cafe was quite busy, our meals came in about 15 minutes and they were good. The chowder was thick and delicious with nice toast, the eggs were fine. Good coffee here too. Other meals coming out looked good - we saw generous servings and colourful dishes. Service is nice, but their admin takes a while - I had to wait while they tried to figure out how much to charge me - three times over. Otherwise it was fine. I would return here.

I had the lamb's fry and bacon. The overall taste and crispy potatoes were great, but the lamb's fry was definitely overcooked - grainy, greyish, leather-like, and somewhat metallic tasting. Please cook it less to preserve a softer, less chewy texture, and slightly pinkish colour. However ... my partner's soup was v good, and the table next to us were very pleased with their vegetarian choices, chowder, and shakes. Service was friendly and prompt. We would definitely go back to the cafe again, but would give the lamb's fry a miss, and try some of the other options

Terrace is a pretty good restaurant. Nice wine selection. However, it lacks in ambiance, character,…read moreand I'd say the food is only slightly above average. I loved my glass of Ket sauvignon blanc. For food I ordered the prawns and a plate of fries. Prawns were drenched in a cream sauce, a little too much. Fries were steak-style and they were fine, hot and crispy, but I was disappointed they didn't have any mustard for me to dip them in. I can't quite figure out how to describe the atmosphere. They have a bar, but only have stools on the opposite ends. They have a TV, but it's in the main dining area, not the bar. The TV had some kind of top 40's music video station on, which was strange for a winebar. When I came in around 8pm, 3 tables were occupied by groups, but by 9pm the place was empty (it was Monday). It's hard to have expectations when you're in such a small town. Maybe I should give them a break. My server was a nice guy and I think he might also be the owner. Maybe if they made just a few adjustments, they could really shine as the best spot in this little town!
