It might be the BEST pie shop on the South Island! They had tons of options, including vegetarian pies and desserts. I had the garlic roasted veggie pie and it was delicious - a perfect pastry crust surrounding a mix of velvety garlic cream cheese, kumara and other veggies. The staff was very friendly and helpful in explaining what was in the various pies. It's a cute little shop with indoor and outdoor seating. read more

I saw this on the route from Otira to Christchurch. Since it shows up on Google as World Famous, we had to check it out. Unlike what is mentioned in previous reviews, thankfully the line wasn't very long and they were only out of 3 pies. The ladies manning the counter are all very nice. The shop is small but has several tables. It is more of a place to pick up pies and coffee on your road trip. I got the Sheffield Supreme with steak, bacon, cheese and onions. My friend got the Chicken, Apricot, and Brie pie. The Sheffield Supreme was excellent! I have previously tried the Lamb and Mint, Mince and cheese, and the Chicken, cranberry and Brie cheese pies at different places in South Island. Amongst these, the Sheffield Supreme had the best flaky crust and flavor with the Lamb and Mint from Arrowtown Bakery. My friend enjoyed her Chicken pie but thought that her pie was too heavy due to the cheese. Having previously had the brie based pie, I second that. But, crust wise, it is a great pie. I definitely recommend stopping here if you have a few minutes. It is along the highway and there is tons of parking along the road. If I ever come back to Sheffield or Christchurch, I shall be back! read more

Amazing pie shop along the way from Christchurch to Arthur's Pass. So many flavors, and the puff pastry is light and fluffy. Flavor could be a bit stronger but there's tomato sauce (ketchup) to top them up. Prices are fair, about how much pies usually are, $8.10 (NZD). I've tried the steak and mushroom, Sheffield special (steak, bacon, onion, cheese), mince and cheese, smoked brisket (special), and steak / cheese / jalapeño. I don't think they gave me mince and cheese, it was steak - unless there's no difference between the two. Would recommend a stop! Pies were also hot, or at least warm every time. read more

Despite this place always being busy it is well worth the wait everyone I've ever gone with to this place has enjoyed the food. They have one vegetarian option and it is so good. Definitely worth the stop and the wait if in the area. read more

A local New Zealander recommended this place to me . I am a vegetarian and they only had one vegetarian pie on their menu . But it was really fabulous , yummy and filling . Do give it a try . Nice service and ambience . read more

Planning our South Island holiday, I was excited for the ample amount of hot pies I was going to eat along the journey- in my research nearly every blog post recommended the Famous Sheffield Pies-promoted for their incredible pie varieties, as well as fresh baked pastries. I highly anticipated my visit, with my list of 'want to trys' ready. When we arrived, about 11am, a fair amount of regular menu choices were sold out, but replaced by 'specials of the day' - I was able to order: moroccan veggie, steak and jalapeno, chicken and apricot camembert, & venison whiskey. The pies were well-priced for their hearty size and quantity of stuffed filling. The pastry was flaky, crispy on the outside, with a denser buttery inside moistness. The fillings were well-seasoned tasty, but the flavor combinations lacked a certain 'pop'- The steak and jalapeno had minimal chunks of steak- was more like a jalapeno gravy steak flavored The chicken apricot cheese was overwhelmed by the cheese, in which no apricot zest was detectable, leaving the chicken dry tasting The venison whiskey had a nice twang to it-being the best of the choices The moroccan veggie was packed with creamy blended veggies, well sauced, balancing nicely with the denser crust Overall, I would say they are a 'visit for the fame of the pie shop', sort of experience. Like 'when in rome eat pasta, when in NZ try Sheffield pies'-a bit overrated for the unique combinations, but lacked flavor- they weren't our favorite pies along the journey, probably not even in my top 3. read more

I came here after finding this place on a list of some of the best hand pies in South Island. Since I was driving right through, I decided to stop on my way back home to America. At this point in my trip I had already tried three other bakeries that sold hand pies. I went inside and I was greeted by some friendly staff. I asked them for their most popular pie and they told me that it was the venison with whiskey relish. I decided to give it a try since I had not had a pie with whiskey inside. I also got a flat white since I love my coffee. As I bit into the pie crust, it was flaky and buttery, which is fairly consistent with all the hand pies I had had on my trip. The inside was a little less desirable as the venison was well cooked and soft, but the whiskey relish way too sweet for me. It was almost like a heavy barbecue sauce and overwhelmed the entire pie. I was a little disappointed to end my trip on this note, but on the bright side, the flat white was pretty good. read more

I can't stop dreaming about this stop. Everything was top notch. Starting with the flat white coffee. May have been top 5 in the world, including Italy. Just done so well, and everything is clean. The veggie pie, spicy, and ham sandwich we were all blown away. Truly. read more

We stopped here on Easter Saturday because we saw the queue stretching outside the shop. The steak & kidney and Sheffield supreme (steak, bacon, cheese & onion) pies were amazing, but the best thing was the Cornish pasty which was sensational - it was so tasty and had some sort of tomato relish on the inside of the pastry! The Afghans are worth a mention too - just delicious!! Even though it was so busy and a holiday weekend, the staff were happy and really friendly - we are so glad we stopped here!! read more

Really tasty savory pies with only slightly oily, but very flaky pastry, and consistent quality fillings. Also, possibly the best meringue pie in the universe. I have no explanation for this, and can only say, if you find yourself in the neighiehood, you are very lucky! 'Pies' are a big Ozzie/NZ thing from their Scottish/ English heritage, and some are really inedible. So I highly recommend you to enjoy these! read more
