    Apple and cinnamon tarte tatin

Man is The Fatted Calf Restaurant delicious! My husband and I were staying in Athlone during our last visit to Ireland and stumbled upon this little gem. The service, food and wine are all great and you will definitely not be disappointed. I started my meal with the butternut squash soup and crusty bread and my husband had the young buck blue cheese beignet both dishes were so full of flavor! For our main courses I had the Fermented barley risotto, which featured baby ceps and butternut squash. My husband had the filet (special) he said that the steak was cooked perfectly! We ended our meal with apple and cinnamon tarte tatin and this layered carrot cake in a cup, both dessert were fantastic! I would definitely recommend checking out The Fatted Calf Restaurant if you are planning on staying in Athlone. Thanks for a great night out!

Truly a nice experience! The atmosphere is very pleasant... but the food makes this place worth a visit. Most enjoyed the Carved John Stone dry aged chateaubriand! Done to perfection, by chefs recommendations... medium rare. The taste is something will be remembered for long time! The amount of the steak "for two" (€75) is more than plenty for four.... about 2 lb of high grade beef!

My family and I were traveling around Ireland on vacation and we came across this place! The atmosphere was modern, rustic and cool. They squeezed us in without a reservation. The service was lovely and food was great! I had the lamb and it was prefect! Beautiful plating as well! Would highly recommend!

Very exciting find. Delicious. The unique use of flavors were refreshing. The price was very reasonable. And the staff were on their A-game.

The space itself is small and cozy, with just a handful of tables and a private room, which gives it that intimate, tucked‑away feel. I'd 100% go back. They offer two specialty cocktails and a wine list, and while the cocktail selection is limited, the wines are unique and fantastic -- definitely worth exploring. The food was outstanding across the board. The monkfish scampi isn't what you might picture, but it's fantastic -- super crispy and full of flavor. And you have to get the bread: tomato focaccia or brown bread, then topped with the fennel, thyme, and maple butter were all unforgettable. The bavette steak was delicious, and the mashed potatoes were truly out of this world. The sea trout was incredibly fresh; just a heads‑up that the gremolata is spread over the whole dish, so it ends up almost poached in olive oil -- worth noting for anyone sensitive to that, but the flavor itself was excellent. Definitely end the night with the affogato and the shortbread cookies (chef's kiss). Who doesn't like to dunk their dessert? Highly recommend, would absolutely come back.
