Solid restaurant, pretty good service. My fish and chips was tasty, but gosh it's a lot more fried food than I anticipated. Yes, I know fish and chips is fried fish and fries. However, the plate was just a bunch of brown fried food, and I was hopeful to see more garnishes, lemons, etc to make it a little more appealing to the eye. My husband had gumbo which he loved and then another plate with a fish on it that I can't remember the name of. He wasn't a fan of it. I did like the peach bellini that I had. It was very balanced and also hit the spot. Great pricing too for it. I also didn't care much for the hushpuppies. Full of oil, and crumbly in the worst way. The other thing that I wasn't a fan of was the fries. It's kind of hard to mess up fries, but these were SO hard that it sounded like you were crunching a bag of kettle chips. I'm not sure if this was how they normally were or not, but it really freaked me out. They almost seemed old and bottom of the barrel. I am absolutely not a fan of the fried breaded crab claws. It was such a huge disappointment from my 1st experience with the boiled crab claws. The flavor of the crab meat was lost in all the bread. Stopped by the Fish Market on 280 with my nephew. We started with the fried crab claws--crispy, flavorful, and absolutely delicious. I also tried the angel oysters (charbroiled with melted cheese, butter, and garlic), but they didn't work for me. The oysters were a bit too mushy and the flavor just didn't land right. For our main dishes, I had the fried whole catfish with a baked potato and salad--classic and well done. My nephew got the fried tenders with fries, and he was happy with his plate. Overall, a solid spot for seafood. Some hits and a couple of misses, but I'd come back for those crab claws alone. The Fish Market is our go-to for Fresh Raw Oysters and Fresh Fish. They have a new oyster menu weekly with Fresh raw oysters. We sit at their big wrap-around bar with the 2 most awesome Bartenders Whitney and Ashley. We typically order the petite oysters, smoked tuna dip, and their wedge salad. And recently tried their in-house cookies one was oatmeal cranberry and the other one was double chocolate with white chocolate chips, both were delicious! When we want something warm we order their Fresh blackened snapper meal, with Greek potatoes and steamed broccoli. The ambiance is warm friendly and welcoming. If you drink wine they have a great happy hour and an amazing selection of wine by the bottle or glass. We have made this our new local hangout. When we arrived we were seated within 5 minutes. It about 10 minutes for our waitress to take our order. Our waitress (Aimee) was very understanding and patient. She was such a sweetheart and recommended some great appetizers from the menu. The restaurant was elegant and clean. Also the restroom was clean. It took about 10 minutes before we received our appetizers and 20 minutes before we received our entrees, which wasn't bad considering that the restaurant was packed. Overall we enjoyed ourselves, the food was great, and we got our moneys worth!! read more

Fish Market is a local chain in Birmingham that is mostly seafood, some Greek food and some selections for those who don't like seafood or kids. It is a little pricey, and for some, what sides/options come with what entree and any fee associated with that may be a little confusing. Took my sister and her friend to lunch. It was quiet, but nice ambiance. At first, I was disappointed that they didn't have luncheon specials; everything was by full price- but worth it! I had John's slaw with dressing and popcorn shrimp- too many to count. There were at least twice as many as I expected. I also had a beer. It wasn't as good as I expected and the Bartender offered to swap it for a different kind. I told her that it was my bad and kept the beer. Excellent customer service! How can I leave zero stars? My husband and I are both Chefs, and we never send food back. After telling the bartender our fish was rotten, she then tried to convince us that she had the same for lunch and it was great. I asked the waitress if the clam chowder was worth it, she didn't eat shellfish so this was without recommendation. If you are asking yourself if the clam chowder is worth it, the answer for me is no. I'm personally not a fan. The frog legs are a good size and the batter is seasoned well. The frog legs themselves are not so it throws them off a bit. The oysters were fine. Honestly every other place in town has a better version of these but they aren't bad. She was prompt, very informative of the menu and attentive to our needs. I ordered the fried snapper with cajun seasoning. It was served hot and tasted fresh, but it lacked seasoning. I didn't taste a speck of salt or pepper, let alone Cajun seasoning. Let's just assume that the cajun seasoning wasn't added. We ordered fried green tomatoes and smoked tuna dip as our appetizers. Ok so I go to their website and place and order I never receive and email but I check my account and see that the funds have been taken from my account. I call to make certain that in fact my order was received. When I call I am met with hello please hold, then she comes back after maybe three minutes and says what's the name, what did you order, first mistake, no hello or anything. Then the call is given to another man who takes the same attitude in all of this I can't get a word in I am just being told to hold. So the gentleman explains to me that they are only able to see the order fifteen minutes prior to my pick up time. My question to him was should I have not received an email with my order? He in turn says I don't know anything about email, hold! At this point I am already at the restaurant still on hold. I explain to the very nice women at the counter my issue, another person comes out and begins to tell me the same thing and that fifteen minutes prior to my order pick up time they can see it as a future order if it in fact came over and that it may be a pending charge that will fall off from their third party vendor. All while telling me they are busy, at which time I explain I am busy at my job as well, but there is a way to handle customer service. My issue is if you choose a vendor you should know how they operate and to tell me it may doesn't work when my money is tied up. To add insult to injury this lady asked if I want to place an order, why would I do that when I showed you the funds are already out of my account, pending or not. Then you use the typical microaggression, saying I am not sure if you understand. At this point I had to explain I was not slow and that I could understand. She follows with another, calling me "honey", at this point I had to tell her its ma'am, and that I would take it up with my bank. I have been dinning at this restaurant for over ten years. I love Maine Lobster. Unfortunately, no one knows how to serve it correctly in Birmingham, Al. I bought my own tools, warm my own butter. It is better to order a Maine Lobster to go. And just recently, there must be a new cook who steamed my lobster in wonderful seasonings. It was not over cooked. In fact it was perfectly delicious. My husband, is not so picky. He loves everything and eats everything. The place has a nice atmosphere. It is comfortable and the service is always good. This was our first time at this location. There's also one in Hoover. I prefer this location, the ambience was nicer. The wait staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant is clean, large, and spacious. Today we ordered the Caribbean Salmon with rice and potatoes, it also came with two hush puppies, the wagyu burger with fries, and the fish tacos. The food was delicious. There are many choices on the menu, almost overwhelming, but I did love the options! I already know what I want to order next time. Highly recommended. We eat at the 280 location frequently. I love fried oysters and they prepare them specially for me. I have an egg allergy so avoid them in most places. I also love their salads, Shrimp and Grits, and Cioppini. Jambalaya and Buffalo popcorn shrimp are other family favorites. The choice of sides is interesting. You can have a salad, or vegetable and soup, or two vegetables. Some choices have up charges. Service is excellent. When the food is ready someone brings it out. They don't wait for your waitress. They easily handle large groups of people. The only negative.. the beautiful front doors are really heavy to open. read more

I went here with friends for dinner. The most important thing for you to know is that The Fish Market has a huge menu and a great selection of beer. It's kind of tucked away at the end of a row of restaurants and shopping. There's plenty of parking and the restaurant itself has a lot of room inside. Tonight I had a beer (or two) and chose the Jambalaya. I hadn't had a good Jambalaya in a long time and I certainly was not disappointed! It was delicious and there was a great mix of all of the ingredients. Very flavorful. There was a lot to eat here and it even (oddly enough) came with two sides. I didn't really know what to choose from their list of sides, so I got fried pickles and french fries. The fries were pretty decent, but oh my goodness the fried pickles. They are probably some of the best fried pickles I've ever had! Between these sides and my Jambalaya, there was so much food here, I felt like I was about to burst! It's quite difficult to rate this restaurant. I went because they have east coast oysters. I dislike gulf oysters which are plentiful here in the south. After a mix up in my order I was served a dozen quite delicious east coast oysters and, per my request, the oysters were identified to me (unlike the first dozen of oysters rather unceremoniously dumped in front or me). But. No oyster fork. No mignonette. No actual oyster cocktail sauce. Actually I was presented with two very large squeeze bottles of - I have no idea what (something red and something white) - and a bowl with two lemon slices and two small plastic "to go" cups of horseradish. I was more than slightly appalled. Was this a nice restaurant or was this some kind of fast food diner? The young woman at the bar was pleasant. But the service here, overall, is abysmal. I had a small Greek salad that was tasty - with both the feta cheese and the dressing served in small side bowls (I did not request this)? I really think this restaurant (which BTW looks kind of depressin from the outside and on the inside covers the tables with paper?) needs to decide what it is. Am I prepared for "finer" dining or am I to expect a rather rough and tumble diner experience - like a seafood Waffle House? I'm okay either way, just don't purport to be one and deliver another. I'm very happy to eat an excellent lobster roll out in the open at a roadside shack. But If I'm walking into an establishment that purports to be something more than that, then please treat me with respect. Because this ain't it. Ultimately the deliciousness of the oysters did not overcome the feeling of disrespect I felt as a diner. read more
