I had the oyster roll yesterday and it was good. The French fries were not crisp, and the coleslaw was terrible. The umbrellas were not up at the tables and their were just weeds in their planters. Update: Third time is not a charm. Shame on me. $40.00 worth of rotten stinky fish AGAIN!!! The smell is still in our house days later. Last update: This is the second time I have bought basic fish like cod or haddock from your market. We took it out of the wrapping 20 mins after purchasing it and the smell was tough. But we cooked it hoping for the best. The smell that was left in our house was horrible and yes, of course was not feeling well the following day. A. This is the second time this has happened. B. This was 38 dollars worth of fish. C. We are still trying to get the smell out our house. I was a fisherman for 5 years (bluefin) and have been eating fish all of my life. Shame on you for selling us smelly fish for starters. Any good fish market would NEVER sell fish that smelled like that to any customer. Their fresh seafood prices were very attractive. I got a seafood gumbo, some seafood spread w/hickory smoked shrimp and some smoked oysters in olive oil. The smoked oysters were a little tough, but the gumbo was fantastic. Best gumbo since my last visit to our southern states. My wife got the fisherman's Platter and wasn't overwhelmed. We requested no fries as they tend to make everything else in the container mushie by the time we get home (10 Min drive). She liked the fish (cod?), The shrimp and scallops didn't taste fresh, but frozen. The clam strips were a bit chewy, not tender. I'll definitely return again for soup and try their other soups/chowders as well. I'll add to this review when I taste the clam chowder and seafood spread that were also purchased. The Fish Market is to Willimantic what City Fish is to Wethersfield, well almost anyway. City fish is much larger, both carry a wide array of very fresh seafood products. The Fish Market has 4 to 5 different kinds of oysters, 4 types of clams and of course PEI mussels. There is goodly assortment of fresh fish including Sword Fish, Mako Shark, Talapia and Monk Fish. The scallops on display are all "dry harvested" at $21/lb. that might seem expensive; however, after one bite you'll know beyond a shadow of a doubt the delicate, distinctly sweet, flavorful difference from the ubiquitous frozen verity. They also, serve fried and broiled seafood meals to go and several kinds of "chowda" which is why I was there. You know, I have had chowda all over New England and I have had Rhode Island clam "chowda" in RI not nearly as good, truly this was one of the all time stand outs. This soup was loaded with clams,potatoes, onion bits in a perfectly seasoned flavorful clear clam broth served with Westminster Oyster Crackers the "Hallmark of Oyster Crackers" and on a cold rainy day nothing....well, I 'm sure you get the picture. read more

I have been coming here for crab cakes for many many years!! I moved out of the area and still drive two hours for them on the occasion nothing else will make me happy!! Crab cakes are OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!! I have tried many out in my area and they are nasty inedible and disgusting. I have also had Bay Scallops that I bought and cooked from home and they are just like my gramma use to cook in her cast iron with butter!!! Also very fresh and delicious. This place just keeps on getting better. They haul up fresh seafood from the shoreline daily, and offer it at a fairly decent price. It's obviously more that what you'd pay at a grocery store, but you're getting really fresh, local seafood. Furthermore, the staff really know what they're talking about. We get tips from them all the time, like how to cook blue fish so it doesn't taste so fishy, what seafood will be good for certain stews (I've fallen head over heals for skate, thanks to these guys). You can also get live lobster here for a pretty good deal (not off-the-lobsterman's-boat prices, but not too bad). Lastly, they sell some salmon flown in the Faroe Islands. It's a little pricey, but it really is some of the best fish I've eaten. You can taste how clean it is. Even the fish skin is delicious. Amazing stuff. They also have, no joke, the best lobster roll I've had in Connecticut. We used to go down to Captain Scott's Lobster Dock in New London. And while the view may not be comparable (the New London marina versus the parking lot of the Salvation Army), the lobster roll itself is just sublime. The bun is toasted and buttery and lobster come in big chunks, and there's just the right amount of butter. I mean, they have it down to a science. The fish and chips are also very popular with my fam. But you really have to be finished with your day to tackle the fish and chips. Huge pieces of whatever-is-fresh whitefish and super thick and crunchy batter. It's that kind of heart-stopping, shiny-fingers crust that gets you talking about how you've really got to get to the gym tomorrow. There's nothing "lightly breaded" about these fillets. We also recently discovered their seafood soups. Gumbo is very, very salty but passable. The chowders, however, are spon-on. Really a little gem we have here. Lastly, most the prepared foods come as takeout, although if you must, there are a couple of tables set up in the parking lot. But it's really more set up for takeout. read more

We ordered three 1.5 lobsters steamed for pickup on a Saturday. All we had to do was let them know what time we would pick them up. They were ready when my husband arrived. He brought them home and I immediately shelled them for a recipe on Sunday. The lobsters were perfectly steamed and we have enjoyed an awesome lobstah frittata for the past few days. This used to be a great store but it's gone downhill lately. In the last few months, I've been the victim of two orders of bad steamers, (one order was returned prior to cooking because of a foul odor; the other time I got sick) and a hair in my takeout order of grilled shrimp and rice. More recently, a close-to-fifty dollar item was left out of my bag at checkout. I didn't discover it until dinner time at which point I had to make a half-hour round trip back to the store. In none of these instances was any effort made to make up for my trouble. No store credit, no extra seafood thrown in, nothing. Just an "everyone makes mistakes", "your problem not mine, so stop bugging me" attitude. There are plenty of other, better fish markets in the area. I'll be going to one of them from now on. I like to do business with people who value quality and customer satisfaction, and the Willimantic Fish Market just doesn't meet that standard anymore. read more

I'm not sure why I've taken so long to review The Fish Market. This place really is as good as it gets. The owner is a former City Fish guy (which supplies virtually all of Connecticut). He's a very nice guy and takes pride in his business. All of the fish is labeled with origin, and the vast majority of it is locally sourced. The owner told us one day how he drove down to the docks every day or so to pick up fish right off the boats. Everything is remarkably fresh, and I love that I can select some Rhode Island or Cape caught fish or shellfish. Occasionally some Costa Rican or North Carolina stuff shows up, but everything usually arrived from the nearby docks of CT. Customer service: this is a big one. They're always great, but I really got to experience it yesterday. I picked up two dozen little neck clams on Tuesday. Linguine and white clam sauce! Mmmm...but literally half of them didn't open when cooked. Dead. I've never done this before, but I thought they should know. I went back to the store with my dead clams. Hey, I'll let it go for one or two bad ones, but not for literally half my order. I might as well just hand them my cash and get nothing! The young kid at the counter tried to blow me off. He said "sorry, that happens." I should have kept them on ice. I live five minutes from the Fish Market. I bought the clams, took them home and cooked them. Kid wouldn't budge. Fortunately the owner heard our discussion and he came out front and took over. He agreed that HALF of our order being bad was not acceptable. He was more concerned about whether or not the entire batch was bad. He offered to refund the entire order, but that wasn't necessary. I just accepted a credit towards the purchase of a beautiful fresh tuna steak. So the clam incident was rare. Every other experience, from fresh lobster to locally smoked salmon, is top shelf. The willingness to accept the bad clams was another notch. Okay, bad clams happen...the owner stood up for his shop. Please don't let my clam encounter deter you. We purchase fresh fish and oysters here all the time and have never, ever had a problem. This week had a problem, but it was taken care of quickly and professionally. These guys are the best. (Oh, and the fresh-cooked takeout stuff is pretty darned good, too!). read more

Stopped at The Fish Market today for dinner, what a wonderful experience. I loved the atmosphere. What I believe to be the owner was a kind man who asked me what I would like to eat. The staff was extremely kind and asked if I needed napkins, a fork..ect.. They treated me as if I was family, and we had never met. Had a great conversation with the owner, very personable. This store is just ok, nothing great. I am defininetly not overly impressed! The prices are higher than average. For instance one oyster is $1.25 where as most places are $1.00, or .75cents. They have local seafood from Stonington Ct, but I they also carry seafood from other countries including China. Living so close to the Atlantic Ocean its a mystery why someone in this area would buy fish from China. They carry both wild caught and farmed seafood. They also have a lobster tank, but again their prices are higher than other seafood stores like Seawell in Stonington, or even City Fish. read more

I have been going regularly in the last two years -- and it is all good! Before moving to this area in 1988 I used live a very short distance from City Fish. After I moved to Mansfield, I would make the several hour round trip to City Fish a few time a month. Once the Fish Market in Willimantic opened, there was no need to go anywhere else. Honestly, who wants to schlep to the shore or Rocky Hill when we have this gem right here? I love the owners, the shop, and the fish. In reading some of the reviews, folks seemed fixated on price. First off, the prices are very fair and reflect the market and quality. Secondly, I would gladly pay a premium to support this local business. A fish market is a tough business, and these folks have found a way to make it work without compromising anything on the customer side. You can smell and taste the difference! It is also unfair to compare prices at the Fish Market to City Fish. City Fish does an industrial volume. I think the folks at the Fish Market do a damn fine job and the prices are really not an issue unless you are pinching pennies or just need to gripe about something. Consider the options: several hours to City Fish and back on a Saturday with crowds and ice chests, or stinky super market fish. Please support this local treasure! We considered moving to Franklin recently, and one of the 'con's on our list was being further away from the Fish Market in Willimantic! We stayed put. read more
