Found this gem thanks to a TimeOut article on vegetarian restaurants in Lisbon. This spot takes great pride in their food, with friendly and low-key staff and local food and wine selection. Each dish was delectable, and super affordable! We were able to sit on a table outside, which was awesome as it was on the stairs and totally different from the typical outdoor dining experience. I am recommending it to everyone I know!

not a dish. just a postcard from the food temple.

the food temple. not easy to find. hidden behind a blue door. but we stayed 100 m away. so no problem. small space so u better reserve a table in advance. basic design when it comes to furniture, but hey, we are here for the food. and since we are neither vegetarian nor vegan we are curious. in a nutshell: the starter soup beetroot was tasty but slightly too thick and could have had some more spices. all 3 tapas we had were very well balanced and served the both of us. the main dish - theres only one per day (see pict) was tasty but needed a bit of salt. beer is cheap. and all in all we spent 35 euro. staff was nice and helpful. all speak english ;-). we would go again and didnt miss the meat. thx. ps no dogs allowed. as always in lisboa. which is not nice as ours was waiting at home.

    Charming.

Worth a visit for the authentic and unique setting alone. The restaurant is located in an alley surrounded by buildings. If I was to describe it in one word, I'd definitely say 'charming'. If you are young and would like to make the most out of your visit, ask to be seated on the stairs. You will be provided with a beautiful stool that serves as a table. Looking up, you will see a lady hanging out her laundry, two neighbors talking to each other through the windows, again - charming. They also have a few 'normal' tables. We made dinner reservations - definitely make one in advance - and I can not praise Alice enough, for exquisite customer service (stands out even in uber friendly Lisboa), she was the one to hold email correspondence with me. We ordered a bottle of wine and everything they had on the menu that evening, though I must honestly say it was way to much food. Didn't make it to dessert, which was a shame, as everything sounded really good. Sitting on the stairs, enjoying the authentic surrounding, drinking a bottle of wine and enjoying a wonderful vegan meal. A truly unique experience.

    Our menu

We aren't vegans or vegetarians, but heard some great things about this place and decided to give it a try. We highly recommend making a reservation (we did, through email, and they were both extremely pleasant and quick to reply). We arrived at 7:15, and wasn't seated until 7:40 while two of the folks working there took a smoke break. To be fair, they don't officially open until 7:30. Everyone working there dress and look like hippies, and that's more or less the vibe of the place. But they are all super friendly, which made our experience really enjoyable. They change the menu everyday, so even repeat visitors will find something new. There's a juice of a day, an iced tea of the day, soup of the day, three tapas, one main course, and three dessert choices each day. They also have a pretty extensive beer and wine menu. The four of us basically got two of everything, and didn't really have any complaints. The food was flavorful and delicious, though frankly nothing all that *amazing* that means a 5-star review for me. What is pretty cool is the fact that they have an open kitchen, and for us it felt like watching a few young people cooking a home made meal together. Just three small things to note. The prices are a bit high for the portion, ingredients, and skills required, though you might feel different. A few of the dishes that are meant to be hot also came lukewarm, which was a bit puzzling to us, since the open kitchen suggests that food is made to order. Finally, they only take Portuguese cards or cash, so foreigners take note!

One of the best spots in Lisbon for vegan food. I was here with two of my friends that I made at a hostel nearby and we decided to dine here for our last night with each other in Lisbon. It was a bit of trek to find but the food was amazing. Highly recommend trying the entire menu. The menu changes often so it's always something new. Everything was super fresh, and you can definitely taste all the flavors of the dishes! Portions were just enough that the three of us finished every last bite. They also make good recommendations for wines that pair well with the dishes being served that night. Overall, healthy, delicious and great vibe! Would definitely visit when I'm in Lisbon again.

I wasn't feeling super hungry so I opted to do a takeout box (€8) of their buffet food. The selection here was fantastic - many lentil/soy based protein options, a salad bar, rice and bread - really the perfect plant based meal where everything was tasty. My average rating really comes from my experience doing takeout. Maybe it's my American mentality, but when they handed me the takeout tray, I made sure to fill it up with as much food as possible (while not overloading). When I went to pay, the owner(?) scolded me and said it was now impossible to close and that I did not do this properly. I apologized and shared my embarrassment with them, but honestly - it was NOT that bad. I wasn't happy that they made a scene where everyone started staring as I continuously apologized and felt stern judgement. Finally, another staff member took over and closed the box for me and I paid and left. After sharing the photos with friends, nearly everyone concluded that it was not overfilled and definitely me just making the most of my limited space. Besides that experience, I still really appreciate them being available and would come back to do the actual sit down buffet so I can avoid this awkwardness again.

This restaurant is beautiful and well thought out. I love the entrance and the journey to the main dining area. I love the interior design. I love the open-concept kitchen that grants the ability to watch the chefs work their magic. I love the dishware and the presentation of the food. Ultimately, I love how intentional the creators were with the development and execution of Ao 26. I ordered the Francesinha and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Upon reading the description, I was hesitant because it did not sound like something that I'd enjoy, but I was desperate to try a dish native to Portugal. It was delicious - so so delicious. I'm glad that they were able to veganize the native dish and execute it so well. For dessert, I ordered the Peanut & Chocolat Pie. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't order it again because it was slightly too rich for me, however, if you like dark chocolate, that is the dessert for you. I loved my experience here. This would be a great place for a date or night out with friends. The food is great and the vibe is better. Thank you Ao 26.

I'm afraid that was the most interesting part of the experience. Service was okay, but definitely not particularly friendly. We asked the server which was a good, traditional (albeit vegan version) Portuguese dish. She recommended the Supreme Bifana sandwich. So I ordered that. It came with sweet potato fries. I forget exactly what was in the sandwich, but it was pretty bland. There was a sauce that came with the dish and that was tasty. But the sandwich itself was meh at best. The fries were also disappointing. They were soggy and very oily. Dipping them in the sauce made them somewhat edible. So meh food and meh service equals a meh review.

I was intrigued by the presence of a vegan restaurant in Lisbon, but it seems like vegan and vegetarian restaurants are plentiful here. The menu is just as tiny as the restaurant. There are 2 main dishes and a few desserts and starters. I ordered the daily dish, which was called Brunch. It included vegan cheese on toast, vegan sausages, a slice of sun-dried tomato, roasted beets on top of potatoes, and oats with strawberries and bananas. Elements of the dish were both a hit and a miss. As a non-vegan, the individual components were very good attempts at replicating the real thing. First, the cheese had the right texture. It had a very light and subtle flavor that I enjoyed. The vegan sausages were too dry on the inside. The beets and potatoes were particularly good, but I'm a bit biased as I enjoy beets in general. The oats in soy milk was tasty. There was a subtle sweetness to it. Overall, the food was good and a good value for €13.

We got the vegetable curry twice, as well as a quinoa salad, a tofu scramble, a carob cake, and some juice. Out of all of these, the quinoa salad was my favorite. But even the warm curry was delicious on a hot day! The carob cake was a bit dry and crumbly tasting, though -- I think I can bake a better one myself. There was quite a rush for the cheesecake, so I wonder if that would have been better? Sadly they were sold out once we wanted dessert. Service was a bit slow and they don't open before noon, but that's fine when you are on vacation :) As others have mentioned, the space is small, so going here with a large group is probably not advisable. I liked that their food menu was hand-written. It sounds like they just make up the menu as they go, and include whatever dishes they can make with the produce they have available that day. Overall, I very much enjoyed eating here -- it was nice to just get some good old vegetables among all the meat offerings of Portugal!
