This pub was everything you'd want in a nice local pub. Friendly folks, good beers, and a nice little outdoor area in the back. It's not a big place, but we had no trouble finding a place to sit. The night I was there, they had a local Indian restaurant serving Indian food. It was quite reasonable in terms of price and outstanding in terms of flavour. I enjoyed the vegetarian thali more than I've enjoyed almost any Indian food anywhere. So there are lots of things to like, and really nothing to dislike. A good pub worth stopping by again. read more

"SMALL HIDDEN GEM" I'm not a big bar fan, but this is a place you cannot miss. What i like about it is that this place has character. The bartender really enjoys what he does and entertains everyone who comes in. If you have ever watched "Cheers," well this is the closest you are going to get. Now i'm a foodie and for bar food they have is good stuff. I would have to say it's a step above the rest. I don't even know if you can call it bar food because it actually has enough variety to be called a restaurant. For example bangers and mash which is classic bar item, they usually have 2 or 3 different types of sausages you can choose from. Last time I went I got a chicken with chocolate mole sauce. Not your typical bar food. What is even better is that their menu changes what seems like weekly. Great small local pub, excellent food, and friendly people! read more

Amazing FACT The lover and I spent an evening in this cosy bar one Friday night after finding it on doggiepubs.org...as Count Merlot (the English Setter) was allowed to join us! I've lived in Cambridge for several months because I am studying abroad at Cambridge University. I used to come to The Free Press often but not anymore because one of their staff treats me like trash. She has short Curley blonde hair, middle age, and works at noon on weekdays often times back then. I think she maybe one of the bosses there cuz one time I saw her playing with a kid at the bar. It maybe her son. I'm Asian. She has showed her grudges since we've first met. The first time I thought maybe I misunderstood her so I did not pay attention. The second time I started to realize what's going on. I loved their fish and fries so I always ordered that and seldom tried other dishes. There was one time I decided to make a change so I kindly asked her whether the steak pie is good. She rolled her eyes over and looked at me like I'm a moron, and said: " It is awful. Yeah. Because we always put awful things on our menu." The thing is I never see her showing this kinda horrible attitudes toward any other customers. But the minute I walked in The Free Press and she saw me, I knew she had a problem with me. Foreigners with different skin tones, WATCH OUT. It may be a horrible dining experience for you. read more

This is one of our friend's all-time fav pubs to visit when he comes home to Cambridge, as he now has lived in the U.S. for the past couple years, and my husband and I can certainly see why! We loved the variety and amount of board games (simple ones from Hang Man to more intellectual like Trivial Pursuit), and of course, we also appreciated being able to do a flight of three cask-conditioned ales on tap. For locals, there are also bottles from all over world including a few microbrews from the U.S. that I recognized. There are restaurants/caterers with pop-up kitchens, but we didn't get to try any food, as we usually had just eaten somewhere else and would drop by here afterward or started the night here. It feels very hip and young at night, with a lively crowd. read more

Having finished our Cambridge Bike tour, we were pretty gasping for a decent pint and some real food. The hidden-away Free Press didn't disappoint. It's a proper pub, like they should be. Three separate bars - including one designed, apparently, for thirsty dwarves. Plenty of real beer on tap - good range, well-kept and well-served. The staff were young, fun and friendly. We ordered from the small-but-excellent menu. We went with the Ploughman's. Now in most pubs, this is a recipe for disappoint/misery/death/. But not at the Free Press. Every component was fresh, delicious and innovative. And plenty of it! Hard to fault. Sadly, I don't live in Cambridge, but if I did I would live in the Free Press. read more

Great no-nonsense local pub with good pub food and range of beers. Staff are very friendly and there's a selection of board games. TV gets brought out for significant sports matches and guitar gets played if you're unlucky to be there with an amateur musician. We go there all the time in groups to catch up among friends. read more

This is somewhere between 3.5 stars to 4 stars. The local favorite serves traditional English fare, and is a nice quaint place tucked in a small alley. I tried black pudding for the first time at the Free Press as part of the Lancashire salad, and again as part of the full English breakfast, and it was excellent! You can also find white pudding and haggis here, which were as good as white pudding and haggis can get, I think. Dessert-wise, I highly recommend ordering the Cornish ice cream AND the sticky toffee sponge cake and eat them together. Despite a small amount of tiny ice crystals in the Cornish ice cream, it had a rich, luxurious creamy texture, and the coldness played a nice contrast to the hot and gooey sticky toffee sponge cake. (I do not recommend the chocolate torte though, since the sugar in it had a crystalline, grainy texture that reminded me of a failed brownie...) read more

I frickin' love this pub. It has a straightforward but very tasty menu (and very veggie-friendly) and a fine selection of beers. It's smallish, but not too small and feels welcoming - the bar staff are uber-friendly. It's also clearly forward-thinking, as they went smoke-free way before the ban and have a mobile-ban in place, which can really only be a good thing. There are lots of games available and there is a lovely little 'snug', where four or five of you can shut the door on the rest of the pub and feel like you're very special indeed. The landlord once gave me some kindling wood, out of the kindness of his heart, and I was truly touched. read more

I can't believe I'm the first to review this gem of a boozer. Great food, excellent beers and a patio out the back which just begs for evening drinking in the summer months. There is plenty of places to tie you bike up in the area and there is even a car park 1 min walk away if your driving in. Its another Green King pub but has a great selection of other ales on as well as the odd continental lager. Rory McGrath was in here last time (I believe he is a regular and lives around the corner). Its in my top 5 Cambridge pubs without a doubt and I cannot wait to go back. read more

Just this week I was reading a short history on Thomas Merton, a monk who died tragically in Bangkok,in 1968 age 53. The short history I was reading mentioned that he had attended Clare College - it on went on to stress the point that he was more often in the pubs around town than in the library. When I visited The Free Press this afternoon with a friend I wondered if he (Thomas) had been in here at all. Easily the best pub in Cambridge. There are no fruit machines and there is no music - this a definitely a traditional pub, with a proper 'snug', board games and a good selection of real ales. The bar staff are also friendly, and there are quite a few 'locals' but it is not intimidating. But the main thing about this place is the food. It is absolutely delicious. I had the duck a couple of weeks ago and it was beautiful. The portions are quite small, but perfectly formed - and it leaves room for their desserts! read more

Stopped by Free Press whilst pub hopping through Cambridge this past weekend. As others have described, Free Press is a traditional cozy pub with primarily cask conditioned beers that can be sipped while playing a selection of board games. Though we did not order any food, we enjoyed our time playing jenga at a corner table with a couple of greene king pints. The atmosphere is more laid back and local, as opposed to some of the flashy student pubs and clubs down the road. Overall, Free Press is a great local pub to grab a pint. read more

I miss the Free Press so much now that we no longer live in Cambridge. What a gem of a pub. Before the UK went smoke-free, this was one of the only smoke-free pubs in Cambridge. Also, it's a mobile-phone free zone, which just gives the whole place a really nice atmosphere. The food here is second to none- great pies, pasta, and mains, yummy ciabatta sandwiches, and desserts that are to die for. It's a small place, so it can be hard to get a table, but they allow you to call ahead and reserve one if you want. I absolutely love the Free Press. A must visit for anyone in Cambridge. read more

I was a student at Cambridge in the 80s and never found this place. Over the last few years I've been back a couple of times and discovered the Free Press -- with rather mixed emotions! On the one hand I'm delighted to have come across such an oasis of culture -- good food, great beer, a wonderful atmosphere -- but on the other hand I find myself cursing the fact that I never stumbled upon it when I was a student. One of the first non smoking pubs in Cambridge, this cosy pub has roaring fires in winter and a delicious menu. My friends and I used to pile into the snug, where you get your own strip of bar, and settle in for a long comfortable evening. The beer selection isn't the greatest, but certainly acceptable. Very handy for the Grafton Centre and the bus station, it is sufficiently off the beaten track to feel personal, and there is a good selection of board games too. read more

This really is an excellent pub. Having not been in Cambridge for many years, it was encouraging to see the general improvement in what historically had been a pretty poor slew of ale houses (remember the Snowcat anyone?). Well to the top of the current list, the Free Press has an excellent beer selection (mainly GK) and outstanding food (home made sausage plate with grainy mustard!!). Great food and surprisingly well-priced, plus a changing selection of beers, good wine list, small suntrap of a beer garden, open fire in winter, and set of board games to help you over the trauma of being separated from your mobile phone (their use is banned in the pub). Favoured as a meet-up spot by local groups, and - especially since it started opening before six on a Friday evening - as a place for local office workers to unwind. Don't get your hopes up for a Friday lunchtime table unless you've booked. Toilets, accessed by leaving the main building, are a bit old skool. read more
