This pub has it all. It's massive, with two if not three separate dining rooms, two bars both with spacious lounge areas for drinkers and two beer gardens, one at the front and a stunning leafy one in the back. Then we can discuss the slightly pricey but phenomenal food. I destroyed my starter of mushrooms in white wine sauce and pizzette. It was so good and filling. My ribeye steak was cooked to perfection, whilst the apple and blackberry crumble was that delicious combination of crunchy and fruity. I honestly cannot fault anything, but if I had to nit-pick the service was a little haughty and it wouldn't of been a crime for at least one of the servers to smile. Other than that, I can do nothing but bestow this place with five stars.

If you're planning to spend your afternoon walking in Hampstead Heath, this place makes a a great pitstop for a pint or a glass of prosseco. Sun's out? Make sure you head towards the back of the house, to the huge terrace. The roast looked amazing but will have to come back and eat here to confirm. Service at the bar and no food outside unfortunately, but this is a cool gastro-pub, well situated.

This Sunday my friends and I decided to organise a proper Christmas lunch. I make my way rarely to Hampstead Heath, even though it is a beautiful area on the north side of London. Lots of up and downs, not ideal for jogging or biking but you can have long walks in the Hampstead Park! We hardly found the pub, which is hidden in a small street, where hardly cars can pass by. People where sitting outside, having a cider or cup of tea probably just after their Sunday walk in the park. We made our way directly inside, where our friends where already waiting with a moulded wine with a slice of orange in it. The atmosphere was reflecting the advent time in winter. People entered the pub with gloves and scarves; the only thing, which was missing, was the snow! We had a table reserved for 2pm but they made us wait for 30minutes. We had a good time at the bar, catching up while enjoying our moulded wine. We all prepared a present, which we would exchange randomly later, it is a German tradition called "wichteln". The perfect place, as there was a traditional decorated Christmas Tree in the middle of the pub. My friend has already e-mailed us the Christmas brunch menu, so we already knew exactly what to order. It turned out the Sunday roast they proudly advertised was only available on a Saturday. After discovering that they run out of other things on the menu as well. I decided on the lamp shanks in lentils and Brussels sprouts, while as two of my friends chose the chicken roast, the only roast left. The fish dishes looked delicious as well, more for a light meal. Personally I would not choose the pizza, as this traditional pub has good British food. This Sunday we ate ourselves through from 3 shared starters for a table of 8, to generous main courses to the desserts and did not got out of the pub, which was warmly enlighten by a chimney fire, before 6pm. By that time we opened all our presents, I received an interesting bed lecture called Lick My Cheese - a witty book for any flatmate. My friends ended up continuing to have a drink at another bar, while my boyfriend and I decided to take a walk in that charming neighbourhood.

This is a definite gastropub. In fact it's won lots of awards, mostly recently from The Independent, for being such a good gastropub. Whatever you think then of this sort of change to the traditional pub landscape the food and atmosphere here is a step up. The location for one is brilliant. It's right on the edge of Hampstead Heath and perfectly placed for a meal or drink after a walk. Plus the road it's on is so nice. Really feels much more village-like than it is and somewhere the 'green' seems to putting up a much better fight against the 'urban' than elsewhere in London. There is a really big outside area at this one, great in the summer. Inside the food menu is quite extensive, pizza and pastas get quite a lot of attention as does fish, salad and big sharing plates. I had a really nice bottle of wine too, the list is pretty good, lots of new world whites plus French and Italian classics.

Not the best feel but the beer garden in summer should create more of a buzz.

We ordered salt and pepper squid, scotch egg, fish and chips and the ultimate burger with sweet potato fries. The food took quite a long time to come - probably as it was busy. There was also a whiff of dishwasher/cleaning fluid in the air as the kitchen directly opens up onto the seating area. When the food arrived I fell in love with the warm scotch egg, however, I wasn't very keen on the fish and chips. I felt like it lacked crucial flavour and crispness. The pricing isn't too bad for the heart of Highgate and I would probably go there again - I just wouldn't order the fish and chips.

Out of the many great pubs to choose from in Highgate The Angel Inn is one of my favourites so we headed over. It's a lovely, cosy place, with original 1930's wood paneling and gorgeous open fires mixed with trendy couches and tasseled lampshades hanging over the bar. The atmosphere is very relaxed and friendly, and during the day you will find anyone from 20-somethings to families with babies and dogs all enjoying a drink. The music is usually good too (think Mumford and Sons and old classics such as Portishead) creating a nice, chilled out ambience. Whilst in the evening, it becomes more bar-like and large groups reserve tables for various celebrations. For me though, the food is the main attraction, and if you like pub food you will not be disappointed. Everything here is served up in hearty and delicious portions, from "Cumberland Sausages and Mash" to "Pork Belly, Sauteed Leeks and Bacon Mash", it's all scrumptious and served promptly with a smile. What can I say, it appeals to both the Yorkshire and Greek in me. The bar men are very friendly and polite too so if you add them to the amazing food, great drinks (this is one of the only places I can find bottled raspberry beer) and a great venue, it certainly deserves the title of a fantastic local. Top Tip: The Sunday Roast is to die for.

They have a nice outside seating area that was closed, and the demographic in the restaurant was a bit over middle aged. That didn't bother us much, the food was very good, I particularly enjoyed the sausages and happily dipped them and my pitta in the tzatziki sauce. 3 things that bothered me about Carob tree were that the vibe resembles more a posh english restaurant (even with the faint greek music in the background), the fact that the bottled water we ordered was room temperature (if you know me, you know how much that infuriates me) and the worst thing was that we saw the other tables getting their complimentary baclava dessert but a plate never reached our table! :( Overall it was a lovely meal, if you want something quiet and don't mind paying for the privilege.

We ended up at The Carob Tree after a rather hungry stroll in Hampstead Heath. Overly grateful for…read morethe table and ungraciously eager to order, "no no, we'll order drinks and food together." Now that we should stumble across a restaurant so well reviewed by my boss is simply delirious luck, but to be greeted by just the right character of host was wonderful. A quick scan of the menu we had been recommended to choose around five dishes, including a dip or two, a couple of meat dishes and a salad. Naturally we went for a bit more than suggested, because by this stage no food seemed like it could be enough - but we restrained from ordering everything, which I felt was good of us. The houmous and melin tzanosalata to you and I that's: roasted aubergine, tomato , garlic olive oil and lemon dip came with fresh toasted pita - apparently delicious, but I requested something non-glutenous and some refreshing cucumber fit the bill. Oh and wine - let's not forget the wine. The restaurant itself it simple, but extremely welcoming and was buzzing with chatter and evidently very happy guests. The wine was going down a treat, but we were clearly looking starved and assured our food would be coming out as soon as each dish was cooked - that's how small plates work and we were happy to wait. But shortly they arrived in their individual glory - coal grilled asparagus with kefalotiri - that's a delicate cheese, and who doesn't like cheese, on everything? Keftedes next, these are a generously sized mixture of minced pork, spices and potato fried in little balls. But it's not over yet, here goes the charcoal grilled lamb... I know, I know.. I'm hungry all over again. Fresh lemon squeezed on everything; mouthfuls of smokey meat, perked up with fresh flavours red onion and sweet grilled peppers And it wouldn't be a proper meze if we didn't have some squid.. again, the charcoal grill just gives it that flavour that I can't quite get over on every mouthful. The tentacles were particularly crispy, which sounds barbaric but really we all know they're the best bit. Filled to the brim, there's no intention of looking at the dessert menu (though we all know there's a second stomach for that!) But it seems sweet is not an option here - before we could ask for the bill our host has popped these down and almost before we can say thank you.. Greek baklava - layers of filo pastry, syrup honey and chopped nuts We mentioned thrice how sweet it is and by the fourth consideration of its intensity we'd demolished the lot . Concluding, that it was just sweet enough. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. I'd thoroughly recommend a visit here, via the woods or just getting in the car works too!
