Loved this sake (part of the seasonal tasting)
    Tansy W.

Some of the food was good and some was meh. We did the tasting but I left very hungry. For the good, I enjoyed the shabu shabu, but it was so little meat (super thin slices) that I left super hungry. I also loved the dessert course, which was homemade vanilla ice cream with mango. For the not so good, I'd say the sushi, which I expected to be the best course so I was crazy shocked. All the other courses were pretty mediocre. I did enjoy the sakes they had and even went home and bought one of them. But I do wish they would offer a pairing. I just did the seasonal tasting, which came with 3 sakes. They switch out the art periodically (I think monthly) and sell expensive Japanese ceramics (just ask for the catalogue). Overall, I left too hungry and none of the dishes truly wowed me so I probably wouldn't return. Japanese food is too competitive in NYC. But overall still not a bad experience!

Alert alert this is an amazing Japanese restaurant The Gallery on some many levels. Ok the food is absolutely superb OMG..... My Tuna pieces were sensational so fresh melted right in my mouth!!! The Uni was incredible indeed so creamy what an extraordinary experience to eat. The atmosphere was lovely with a beautiful decor and Japanese utensils to enjoy the meal so full of perfection. The service was excellent, the server certainly was knowledgeable of the food and beverages. What a positive and wonderful experience.

In A Nutshell: -The Gallery is a fantastic spot to grab a really great Japanese meal. -I chose this restaurant since it was a part of the Sapphire Reserve Exclusive Tables program. -I really liked the art gallery style industrial decor inside. -The service is really, really good. -Some standout items I recommend are their Wagyu Udon & their Muse Chirashi. -I like enjoying my udon in this style of serving i the conical paper above a flame, the broth is delicious, lot's of umami flavor from the beef & mushrooms. -Their chirashi comes w/ a lot of fresh seafood, I liked the rice since they paid a lot of attention to the flavor profile there. Overall, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND grabbing a meal here, the food is so, so good.

This restaurant blends 2 of my favorite things: food and art. Upon walking in, you're met with unique ceramics and vibrant murals. As an anime fan, I was extra appreciative of the One Piece murals and art books. Even the utensils were unique! The food was almost perfect! We started off the meal with mentaiko fries that were crunchy and went well with the creamy mentaiko sauce. The seafood katsu was okay, nothing too memorable flavor wise. The wagyu udon only came with 3 pieces of meat and did not stay hot for too long, so there was more to be desired, especially for that steep price. The tuna chirashi had fresh and plenty of thick pieces of fatty tuna, which balanced with the amount of rice, and the roe was satisfying to eat! I'm not sure if they were short staffed that day, but it felt like service was slow or not as attentive. Overall, it's a cute place with some good dishes, so I recommend to visit, even if it's just for the art!

I have no bad things to say about this place. I've been 3 times now and each experience is just as incredible as the first time. This past time we went for a super cool one-night only event and it was such a treat - new menu, different sakes that came straight from Japan, garden vegetables, and more. The sushi is incredible quality. You can truly taste it when you're eating it. Any work trip to NYC I'm trying to convince everyone to go!!

Very peaceful space and somewhat small portioned food, it's more for the experience and ambiance! Food was quite good and fresh. The gallery is integrated beautifully with natural materials throughout. I enjoyed our salad, deluxe sashimi platter and tuna hotpot. Staff were very respectful

When I heard a legendary ramen chef from Japan was coming to NYC for a limited time, I had to make a reservation. I am disappointed to say it didn't live up to the hype. Ambiance of the restaurant was really good and it had a vibe of a temple because of the incense. The service wasn't great. I like how they kept refilling my water but the waitress that served me, I am not going to bash on the waitress that served me, just felt she was a bit rude. The food was ok and not amazing. It had so much hype because it was from a legendary chef who learn from the ramen king and he had a restaurant in Japan that was nearly impossible to get a reservation. He only here in NYC for a few months showcasing his ramen. The broth and noodles was fine. It felt like the noodles were from Sun noodle company which supplies a lot of ramen restaurants. The pork was tough and chewy and coming from a high level legendary chef in Japan, it should have been at least 10x better. Overall for anyone to come to this popup, curb your expectations by 1,000%. It's not worth the $36 with tip and tax and there's probably better bang for your buck miso ramens in NYC. Also, only the ramen and the $100 tasting menu is part of the popup, everything else, you can come back anytime. I expected a lot more from a "legendary" ramen chef and this ramen is a huge letdown. One and done is not justified

We visited The Gallery for dinner on a Sunday night, having made a reservation in advance. They were very accommodating about letting us move it by 30 minutes, since we were running late. The interior really did look like a gallery, with large works of art on the walls. The one we were sitting next to looked like a super zoomed in photo of rice grains, which was quite fitting. For drinks, my sister and I both chose the Yuzu Breeze Mocktail, which had the perfect amount of sourness while still tasting refreshing. For food, we both decided to get Chef Hiroki Odos Tasting ($95/person) to try a bit of everything. The first course was the Seasonal Starter, which was the Toro Tartare. The Toro tasted so rich and high quality, and paired well with the golden osetra and white miso potato espuma. I'm usually not a huge fan of gelatinous textures, but it really worked here. The next course was Chef Odos "3 pieces of seasonal kushi-age selection", and we were given Jidori Chicken, Asparagus, and Bonito Fish. Again, not what we would normally choose, but all three were pretty good. The Bonito Fish was a bit too fishy for me, but we still enjoyed this course and the accompanying sauces. The next course was the Wagyu Shabu Shabu, which was probably our favorite. The broth had an amazing umami flavor and was surprisingly filling, and the thinly sliced A5 Wagyu was phenomenal. The final course was the Chef s Selection 4 pieces nigiri sushi and roll, which featured Salmon, Yellow Tail, Tuna and Toro. All the pieces were tasty, but the Toro really stole the show. The tasting menu was also the perfect portion size to satiate us without feeling too full. Overall, worth the visit!

    Premium kushiage

It was like getting robbed, and I rarely say that. Portions were rly small and nothing stood out. Fish wasn't that fresh in rice bowl and wagyu udon was rly average. Premium kushiage was solid

Some kushiage (jidori chicken, sweet potato, lotus root)

I actually first heard about the Gallery from an interview with Lucy Liu in the NYT, and it seemed she was very excited about the udon here -- so of course I had to come try it out! I stopped by with a friend on a gloomy Saturday; we had reservations for 12:30, and while the place was pretty empty when we got there, it did fill up over the next hour or so. The interior is so lovely, definitely heavily influenced by the Japanese strain of minimalist aesthetic, with lots of natural materials (our chopsticks were literally sticks) and colours and similar decor, plants, etc. The table in the centre was even filled with ceramic pieces (that might have been for sale? not sure). We ordered everything to share, starting with an order of the chicken nanban. Very yummy, the chicken was fried to a nice crisp while the meat was still very tender, and I really enjoyed the lovely and unique egg/tartar sauce that came on top. We also had some kushikatsu (edit: called kushiage on the menu, but same thing) - jidori chicken was a delight, and I also really loved the lotus root and sweet potato skewers. The breading was not too heavy or oily, and the veggies in particular tasted really fresh. Finally, we ordered the kitsune udon and the cold zaru soba. The udon (I fear) looked much better than it tasted - there certainly wasn't anything bad about it, but the broth and the noodles just... tasted pretty average? Portion size is also a bit small but that was ofc more expected. The soba was similarly... OK? Noodles were well-cooked and chewy, which I liked, but the dashi to dip the noodles in felt a bit bland, even with all the herbs/garnish inside. I would say that the biggest issue during our meal was that service tended to be on the slow side; I'm sure the pacing of the various dishes was intentional, but we spent a lot of time waiting around for our "next" course (and generally getting the attention of our server), and ultimately spent over 2 hours for our meal. (which is not inherently a problem, I love chatting the afternoon away, but just an important heads up!) Still a lovely experience overall, and I'd recommend a visit. The quality of the food was very good, and the price point, while definitely on the high side, was fair considering that calibre -- good for an occasional splurge.

The Gallery is a really great treat - unique dining experience in a gallery! Tons of eye candy with great food. Tables are large and spacious and comfortable for my large party, which they were extremely accommodating with! We ordered a ton of items to share - everything we ordered was high quality, plated extremely well and quite delicious. Flavors were complimentary and reasonably portioned. Would return again.

Love the decor. You're literally sitting inside an art gallery.

It's a little hard to categorize this place. Is it an izakaya? A sushi joint? A burger shop? Alas, I think trying to pigeon hole this place does it injustice. No matter what their category is, they do it well. The clean, fresh ingredients, plating and presentation, eating in an art gallery surrounded by beautiful works of art, and service are all here. Edamame is usually a throw away dish for me. Something I just order so I have something to munch on while having a beer waiting for the actual meal to start. Well, let me tell you, the edamame is fantastic here and worthy on its own merit. Very well charred which adds a deep umame that enhances the already nutty flavor of the soy beans. The kushiage was fun to eat. Fresh vegetables, seafood, and meats that were fried with a dusting of panko. It was light and not greasy and allowed me to taste the flavors of each item. The wagyu shabu shabu is not to be missed. The presentation was beautiful, quality of beef so luxurious, and the broth so delicious. They give you a little yuzu kosho (ground up chili peppers) that adds natural great little tartness and spspiciness to the broth. The sashimi and sushi were very traditional eno style with right balance of fish and rice (except for the cream cheese in the snow crab roll--dont order this one). Fish was fresh, of course. Finally I appreciated that they had some non-alcoholic drinks available including a mocktail and couple of sparkling teas. I wish they had some others like non-alcoholic wines. Anyway this place is perfect for date nights and for a casual (albest a bit of a splurge) night out.

To drink, I had a Hot Organic Super Matcha Tea for 4.95. It was alright tea, and I wish teas were included in the price point, as otherwise, this place feels pretty traditional. In terms of food, I only ordered from the seasonal menu, so I'm not sure how the rest of the dishes are, but from what I had, I would go back for a light traditional meal. My appetizer was the Dashimaki Tamago/だし巻まき卵たま, or sweet savory omelet with daikon for $6.98. This came with three pieces along with a little dollop of grated radish. The pieces had a light sweetness to them along with a bit of savoriness. They were juicy and a bit bouncy while maintaining some softness. This was standard and good. My main dish was the $19.98 Beef Tan Tan Udon, or ground sirloin beef, spicy broth, baby bok choy, kikurage mushroom, scallions, and sesame seeds. While I have preferred udon from spots like Raku, the udon had a mild chew to it, and they were still good. The broth had a mix of sweetness and spiciness with a nice depth of flavor. The vegetables inside tasted fresh, and the meat added some richness. This was good as well. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way to go here, but the food was good. If you're in the area and looking for no frills Japanese dining in a more comfortable atmosphere at pretty decent Midtown East prices, I would recommend this place.
