This is a warm, cosy place. Think a pint of Timothy Taylor Landlord rather than a glass of Prosecco. Appreciating the crackling fire and beer garden you'll find a nice blend of loyal regulars, academics and mature students (the kids go to West Street, just round the corner). The Red Deer should also be known for a good choice of ales. There are big boards telling you about the guests: the taste, how strong they are, how much they are, etc.
It's difficult to criticise the place to be honest, other than to say it's not the easiest to find. I suppose the surroundings could be better, but that would ruin the feeling of discovery you get when you finally find the place.
