Yet like magic just as my glass emptied, they would re-fill it. I have to say I drank my water glass dry many times as it was such fun watching them fill it up again! The food did taste special _ not only the taste, but the texture, goodness knows what sort of sieve they used to get things so smooth. And some of the dishes were feats of engineering. I think I was just enjoying being delighted. Another nice thing was I especially didn't dress up smartly just to see how the staff would behave towards me. And hats- off-to- them...they treated us exceptionally well; which inwardly made me giggle as we both were wearing our 'Star-Trek' T shirts that day. I would recommend going to Gidleigh which falls under the auspices of Michael Caines the chef and not the Cockney Actor (Sir Michael Caine). If you can't ride horses, a helicopter may be a good alternative. For those of us not reading the manual, remember that you'll be driving on 10 feet wide roads lined by thick, 600-years old oak hedges. They are enlisted cultural heritage and protected by UNESCO. In other words, it's exactly the same roads people used 600 years ago. Quite an experience. No matter what your GPS says, a car journey form Exeter will take you at least 3 hours. The hotel operates time slots for alternating directions of traffic - check your arrival time with them. If you are coming for dinner only, time planning is even more crucial. Quite rightly, the butler will simply not let you skip courses. They will be served in the intended order without exception. In the case of an 8-course dinner, expect it to last until 11 pm. Whether you arrive on a horse or dig your own tunnel, you haven't lived until you come here.

Theres plenty of seating both at the front and at the back of the pub. It's within easy reach on Westward Ho! beach. Children are catered for - with an indoor soft play area for the little ones. The menu also includes childrens meals. There is also a pool table room however children should be supervised. Hot drinks are also served and the menu has a variety of meals. On Sundays they have a Carvery which is popular. A great place to have a drink or a bar meal!

We were really going to the five times award winning restaurant, Terra Madre (part of the Slow Food network), for their 3 course lunch at £14.95 en route to our destination in North Devon, so did not have time to book ahead. So we were offered the Bar Menu instead, which was actually a very good choice, 3 home made tapas dishes for £9.95, which consisted of a rather large bowl of piping hot buttersquash soup with two slices of homemade crusty bread, garlic prawns, hake in tomato cassoulet, garlic mushrooms, and Moroccan style lamb casserole. We added a couple of side dishes of mixed salad and homemade sourdough bread and olive oil. What a feast, all so, so delicious too! Fresh and more-ish, yum! With the booked lunch, you get a free ticket for the Sculpture Park, otherwise it is £4.50. After the meal, we had a look at the interesting art gallery cum dining hall. Some lovely pieces of art and paintings which can be bought. There are also tables outside to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere, have a drink or eat al fresco. Will need to return to wander round the Sculpture Park properly, in such a relaxed and beautiful setting.

The Broomhill Sculpture Park displays one of the largest permanent collections of contemporary art and sculpture in the South West. 300 sculptures by over 60 sculptors are sited in 10 acres of garden that present a wonderful balance between art and nature. This place is quite fantastic and is apparently one of very few art hotels in the UK. During your stay you can not only walk around the gardens and view all of the sculptures, but you can even purchase them afterwards (if you bring a very big chequebook!!). The gardens were a little drab when we visited, (but it was December!!), but I would imagine that during the warmer months they are quite breath taking. An art gallery is situated in the main dining area of the hotel itself and has many many pictures to view and purchase. The place caters for all sort of events such as weddings, large and small parties and corporate events (with its very own corporate facilities). The hotel is also renowned for its many Jazz events held throughout the year. The rooms are very reasonably priced and you get alot for your money. They are very spacious and have everything you need to make your stay very comfortable, with beautiful views over the Devon countryside. The setting is very rural and therefore very quiet and makes for a very relaxing stay and a very quiet nights sleep. The staff are a husband and wife combo (Dutch), and are two of the friendliest people you will ever meet in this business, who could not do enough to help you (especially if you like to drink tea!!). The food is organic and sourced from the local area, which is probably why it tastes absolutely fantastic (the Morroccan food is especially nice). Even if you don't stay at the hotel you should try out its restaurant, which is also very reasonably priced considering the standard. If I was going to be very very fussy then I would have to say that the alcohol is a little pricey, but I suppose it is a hotel after all. Saying that, if you visit their website, you will find that the hotel does do a number of offers to bring the price of staying at the hotel down even further i.e. B&B and reduced price evening meal. A must stop when visiting N. Devon.

It's hard to know if you can believe a sign that insists it is a "Character Pub", but this one does have legit character. It is clearly old and the decor doesn't seem to have changed in 30+ years, but it's really cute and English and I loved it. We sat in the beautiful back garden area for dinner, then moved inside for dessert when it started getting chilly, and we liked both spots. We were eating at a really weird time in the middle of the afternoon, so we practically had the whole place to ourselves, but we could tell it was going to get busy soon as several tables were reserved. I had a broccoli and cauliflower bake, which came with veggies (over-steamed with absolutely no flavour added whatsoever) and potatoes (I got the new potatoes, and had to ask for butter - they came with absolutely no flavouring). The cheese bake itself was also pretty bland, but not terrible. I liked the cheesy garlic bread and chips my friend ordered better than my own meal. She also got a burger that she really enjoyed. For dessert, the bread and butter pudding and sticky toffee pudding were good, and super filling, but nothing super exciting. I just loved the ambiance of this place so much that I didn't much care.

We…read moreneeded a overnight stop-over on our way to Cornwall and I remembered this quaint hostelry and booked in. I am so glad I remembered this pub. We arrived early, giving us time for a few drinks in their wonderful garden. A great selection of shrubs around the adequately spaced tables. Oh yeh, and a great selection of real ales LOL. After a short while we were shown to our room. Lovely room, with all the amentities needed. Comfy, clean bed. In fact the whole room was spotless. After a short nap we went down to dinner, the table had been reserved earlier which was a nice touch making us feel 'special'. Good menu with a choice that would cover every taste. Wines not overpriced as some pubs seem to do. Lovely meal with really good friendly, yet professional, service. A few drinks and we were ready for that comfortable bed. Although the room overlooked the road, it is a very quiet area and I don't think a car passed after 11.00 pm. The breakfast was filling and extremely wholesome. Didn't need a lunch after that 'gut buster'. Thanks everyone for a very pleasant overnight stay, we will be back.

From the moment you walk in and are greeted by a suit of armor and a grandfather clock until you get to your room named after one of King Arthur's knights of the round table, you just feel like you've been transported to a different time and place. In your beautifully decorated room you'll find more of the little touches that make this place so special, like home-made snacks and a bottle of local specialty liquer. The next morning you will be greeted by a full English breakfast presented by a wonderful staff as you enjoy the view of horses in the yard. This place really is wonderful and is the kind of place you could really stay and just hang out in for days. The owners really know what they're doing and understand the hospitality business. If you're in Cornwall or visiting Tintangel than this place shouldn't be missed.
