On any visit to various parts of the UK we always research the area to find a decent pub for our…read moreevening libations. Checking out the area, this time, there seemed very few within the vicinity. Nestling in Llanystumdwy, a village reknowned for the upbringing and education of David Lloyd George until he was 16, is the Tafarn Y Plu (The Feathers). On our first visit, we had eaten, so decided to just have a couple. First impressions were of a small pub with two tiny rooms, one mainly for eating. I say small, but what it lacks in size, it gains in good beer, good food and extremely good hospitality (which proves ladies, that size doesn't matter LOL). As my readers know, I love real ale. There were three on tap. Ian, the landlord, explained to me the history behind the names of these ales and the correct pronunciation. Having tried all three I was a little worse for wear the next morning but we decided to make this hostelry our eating place for the remainder evenings of our stay. We had seen the great food coming out of the kitchen for other diners, and the empty plates going back. The next evening returning I managed, badly, to order my favourite ale (at least it must have been a reasonable pronunciation because I got the one I ordered). We noticed, outside, a sign for Bardsey Island crab so that was our decision for that night. With a choice of accompaniments, we chose new potatoes. When it arrived, it looked delicious, even before tasting it. The crab could be no fresher unless it was still scampering across the ocean floor. Homemade coleslaw and Waldorf salad. Potatoes that tasted as if they had just been dug up from the garden and a salad, with a twist. I am not going to tell you the twist, go in and try it. Cath, Ians wife, certainly knows how to get the best out of local food. We returned for the rest of the break to try the cider ham. Bara Brith, and finally, local steak that melted in the mouth. If you are in the area, or even further afield, the drive is worth it. Go check it out. Great service and extremely friendly landlord and landlady. Cath and Ian, thank you tons for making our visits memorable.

The Castle Inn recently introduced a substantial plant-based menu after members of the family that…read moreown the restaurant became Vegan. The menu includes numerous animal-free options and the result is a huge success and a fantastic place for Vegans. We had Cheesey Garlic Bread as a starter which was gorgeous. Perfectly melted dairy-free cheese on soft thick bread. As a main three of us had the pulled-pork style Barbecue Jackfruit Wrap with chips and Vegan coleslaw. This was a huge dish and very tasty. It was subtly spicy and the flavour caught up with you about halfway through. Very nice indeed. The Vegan menu also included: Vegan Lasagne with Garlic Bread 'Hippy Hotpot' Chilli Butternut Squash Curry Falafel Salad Our youngest daughter wasn't in the mood for anything on the menu (more a reflection on her than on the quality of the food or the variety on offer!) The lady who served us offered her Vegan chicken-style nuggets and chips which went down a treat. For dessert we had chocolate cake with hot chocolate sauce which was lovely and very filling. Their Vegan dessert menu also included a variety of sorbettos and a fruit crumble. What's great about The Castle is that even though the current menu is excellent they are continuing to experiment with the aim of bringing in new Vegan dishes. From chatting with our server it's clear that the new animal-free menu is a success with approx. 20% of all diners ordering from it. A fabulous place and somewhere we'll definitely go back to soon!

We were there on a quiz night. We didn't win unfortunately, but there was quite a big prize. Food was tasty. Happily there was a bit of a choice for vegetarians, and my other half said they're meat burgers were tasty. Good choice of wines (not that I'm a connoisseur).
