This is the worst place ever! In Houston for a convention, 7 of us travelled 35 minutes to try this restaurant which was recommended by various online reviews of what's best in Houston (not to mention we took 2 Ubers costing $48 each). We arrived before 7pm which was the cutoff for ordering "cooked to order" food. Our first indication that something wasn't right was when we entered the Chevron gas station where the restaurant is located. It looked closed but it wasn't. When we entered the restaurant we were told that we could only have what was in the steam tables and they only had baked chicken and catfish left. That was true, but there was only enough for 2 people and we were 7. Additionally, the food was old, cold and the gumbo unrecognizable. The young girl at the counter offered no suggestions just kept saying "this is all we have left." I mentioned that their website clearly stated to arrive before 7pm to place "cooked to order food" and she said "that's because we shut down the stoves at 7." However, we arrived before that time. And, what made it worse is that no one in charge came from the back to offer an explanation or apologize. It seems that what my party faced was business as usual. So, without any food, the 7 of us had to return back to our hotel, spending another $48, hungry and frustrated. As one who travels extensively domestically and internationally, and one who loves to venture out and support the culture and local community, I am extremely disappointed. I've been there once and the day that I went was my mistake that they didn't have oxtails so I ended up having the red beans and rice and the Boudin. I felt like that I was rushed in my meal, but the Boudin was dry the red beans and rice was just OK, but I've never been back after my experience. Stopped by The Greasy Spoon for their famous oxtails. This was my first time trying oxtails and they sure did not disappoint. The gravy sauce was so flavorful and you could taste it in every bite. The meat itself was so tender and juicy and married with the sauce so well. All of this was smothered over a bed of white rice. The Mac and cheese tasted like Mac and cheese and was good. The yams were very sweet and added the perfect balance to the savory dish. I definitely would give this dish an A. There are a lot of glowing reviews of this place, so I decided to try them today. As far as soul food offerings on the Northside go, they're pretty good, but I had a few reservations about my meal. I ordered the oxtail plate which comes with rice and two additional sides of macaroni and cheese and collard greens. I ordered a baked chicken plate, which also comes with rice and two additional sides of cabbage and sweet potatoes. I also added an extra side/small serving of the seafood spaghetti because it looked good. The lady gave me two complimentary cornbreads to round out the order. The good first. The oxtail were big and meaty and seasoned really well. The meat was tender and tasted fresh-made. They side of seafood spaghetti was really good and flavorful. I more than likely will order that again on a future visit. The cornbread was also good and sweet. I love sweet cornbread. Now for the not so good. I didn't care for the collard greens. They had a weird (sort of piquant) flavor to them. I feel like it comes from one or two things: either the dish they store the greens in (a dish used to store food constantly can become flavored by the food stored in it, which can in turn impart that same flavor to foods subsequently stored in it, especially if food was allowed to sour in the dish) or they use that jarred minced garlic with the juice instead of fresh garlic. The jarred minced garlic juice has a weird taste to it. I don't know if the greens always taste like that. I may be willing to try them again on a future visit to see, but it's a no for me today on the greens. The macaroni and cheese was just ok. Better than your average fast food macaroni for sure, but that's no great feat considering. Overall, I will give them another try. I'm giving this place 4 stars just based off my togo order. I had the oxtails which was meaty and well seasoned, the Mac and cheese was creamy and delicious, and the candied yams were superb. My husband had the Cajun chopped steak was underwhelming, it just tasted like regular meatloaf with gravy. The collard greens were fine (not the best I've had). However, their cornbread was sweet and buttery, definitely the best I've had in a restaurant in a long time. There isn't a "sampler" available so I bought three different meals my first visit. The baked chicken has so much soul and flavor. I wouldn't recommend the chop steak, but it wasn't bad. We used to go here several time a month, then the turn over was awful. I wanted when I got good service to leave a tip I asked as I usually to not tip on my card. I want to be sure who I am giving MY money to is going to that person. I was told more than once that the server or the cashier's do not get the tip. So NO tip I find this very interesting as this owner has had financial struggles due to his health, it was featured on CBS one day. We though cool story Until I realized he is not nice to his staff which is why the turn over. The turn over is ridiculous. Which is fine if that is how he wants to run his business, however I find it ironic that he treats his employees so poorly. Black owner treats black employees terrible. I am a small business owner and I am saddened by how he treats his employees most of them are very sweet. The music was really loud but it was good music "ol' school music". I liked the DJ, he was fun, interactive & energetic. There was about 5 people before me and 5 after me. It was a steady crowd. The tables were spaced apart, and there was a table left empty between occupied tables. The boudin egg rolls were available for "cook to order," which is about 20-30 minutes after ordering at the register. I really liked the thick wrapper, spices in the boudin and the sauce. It was my favorite dish. The peach cobbler appeared pretty small because it's spooned into the half-sized soup containers. I liked how the crust was still crunchy. They were stacked in front of the register. The daily dishes are served cafeteria-style in to-go containers. I ordered the oxtails with rice (collard greens and black-eyed peas) and the blackened catfish Opelousas with rice (collard greens and mashed potatoes). The oxtails were surprisingly light tasting and tender. Parts of it were like pot roast and others like gelatinous tendon. The blackened catfish had a nice creamy flavor. The rice is well cooked with a bit of a bite. The collard greens and black-eyed peas weren't as heavily spiced as I expected. The mashed potatoes were seasoned well. They looked bland but had flavor. The cornbread was basic. The decor is pretty cute. There were single swing chairs at the bar table facing the front, plush upholstered seating along the walls and a few tables in the center.
